1. As castanhas nascem nos castanheiros. Os castanheiros são árvores muito grandes que vivem muito tempo – podem viver até mil anos. Há muitos castanheiros em Portugal, principalmente no Norte. Chestnuts grow on chestnut trees. Chestnut trees are very large and live for very long, up to a thousand years. There are many chestnut trees in Portugal, mainly in the North.

2. As castanhas nascem dentro de um ouriço, com picos. Esse ouriço protege-as até elas estarem maduras; depois abre-se e elas caem. Chestnuts grow inside a pod with spikes. This pod protects them until they are ripe, then cracks open and they fall.

3. Para preparar as castanhas é preciso dar-lhes um golpe horizontal. Depois podem-se assar ou cozer. É tradicional comerem-se castanhas assadas no Inverno em Portugal. To prepare the chestnuts you have to cut their skin horizontally. Then they may be roasted or boiled. In Portugal it’s a winter tradition to eat roasted chestnuts.

4. Há muitos vendedores de castanhas na rua que têm os seus assadores e chamam as pessoas dizendo “Castanhas! Quentes e boas!” There are many chestnuts vendors on the street with their “assadores” (perforated pans for coal fire) and call to clients by saying "Chestnuts! Hot and good!”

5. As pessoas compram cartuchos de castanhas, que podem ter meia-dúzia (6), ou uma dúzia (12), ou mais. People buy “wraps” of chestnuts [made of rolled phonebook pages], which can hold half-dozen (6), a dozen (12), or more.

6. São mesmo boas! They are really good!
