The first permanent settlement was in 1607 when Jamestown was founded. Far away from the crown, colonists were forced to take government into their own hands and form representative governments. The first of these, was the Mayflower Compact. Over 100 years later, in 1776, the 13 colonies of the new world declared independence from the crown. After a terrible war, The colonists won their freedom and formed the United States of America. After over 200 years, the United States has grown to fifty states and occupy over triple its original size. This, however, has not come without sacrifice. The U.S. has fought in many wars. Examples would be Spanish-American, Mexican-American, WWI, WWII, the War of 1812, The Korean War, The Gulf War, Vietnam, etc.

A National History

Page 43: A Travel Guide to the United States Of America By Devin Merrell

The United States has a federal government, meaning authority is shared between state and central government. Citizens of the U.S. elect officials to represent them when decisions are made, or to run the government. Along with this, the U.S. government may also not break the set of principles the country stands for or constitution. Bills declared unconstitutional are not passed and made into law.
