A Survey ThroughThe Heidelberg Catechism
LORD’S DAY #36 & 37
Mark 10:17-22 And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.
You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’”
“Good” referring to God in Scripture
Ps. 25:8 - Good and upright is the LORD; therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
Ps. 34:8 - Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Ps. 100:5 - For the LORD is good;
his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.
Ps. 106:1; 107:1; 118:1, 29; 135:3; 136:1; 145:9, etc.
“Good” as an attribute of God’s creation the light was good. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were
gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.
The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.
Regarding the “goodness” of man
Ps. 14:1 - They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good.
Ps. 16:2 - I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.”
Rom. 7:18 - For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.
“Holy” referring to God in Scripture Is. 6:3 - “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory!” Rev. 4:8 - And the four living creatures, each of them with
six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”
Jn. 17:11 – “Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.”
1 Pet. 1:15-16 - as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
Lk. 4:34 - “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”
We take up the name of God:
In faith
In worship
In life
Not everyone
who says to me,
‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven,
but the one who does the will
of my Father who is in heaven. (Mt. 7:21)
Luke 6:45“The good person out of the good treasure
of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces
evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”
Matthew 12:36-37“I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be
condemned.”
OMG!
A Christian should not be mastered by his laziness of his habits,
but, instead, he should be one who
fears God and disciplines his own
heart and tongue.
The Third Commandment
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
The Third Commandment
You shall take the name of the LORD your God,for the LORD will hold him guiltless who takes his name.
