of Your Organizalion" Volume V, Number 4, Winter 1996/97

Pocket Guide to MDA Indicators

This pocket guide is designed to be used as a reference in developinga preliminary management map of your organization, which is the firststep in conducting a Management Development Assessment (MDA).There are four major steps in conducting an MDA, these are to:

Develop a preliminary management map to guide theassessment;

Dcvelop and administer the MDA questionnaire to collectinformation on the management capabilities of yourorganization;

Analyze the survey results and develop a post-surveymanagement map of your organization;

• Develop and implement an action plan for making managementimprovements.

he preliminary management map is one of the key tools of theMDA. When completed, it identifies the key management areas (andmanagement indicators within each area) that are important to yourorganization. For ach management indicator, it provides baseliner t rence critcria describing the desired level of organizationalcapability according to each of the three stages of development. Afterconducting the MDA survey (Step 2), the preliminary managemcnt mapis used as a guide to determine t e stage of development of yourorganization in each management indicator, and is used as a baseline forcomparing your progress and determining objectives for strengtheningyour organization's capabilities.

This Pocket Guide o(MDA Indicators provides sample managementindicators and reference criteria according to the three stages ofmanagement development used in the MDA. You can use theseindicators and criteria in developing your preliminary management mapor modify them to suit your organization's needs and priorities. For asample preliminary management map derived from this pocket guide,please refer to pages 6-10 of th accompanying supplement, The MDAStart-Up Kit.
