Summer Term Issue 35: July 2009

Parent Consultation and our Strategy for Change

As most of you are aware Edmonton County School will be one of the first schools in Enfield to have Building Schools for the Future (BSF) money in order to help us continue to improve your child’s education. We are expecting new buildings and remodelling of our present buildings by 2014.

Thank you to those parents who attended the consultation evenings in November and May. Students are also getting involved in planning the sort of learning spaces they enjoy working in, and also designing the sites so that they feel safe everywhere inside and outside the buildings.

Last term we informed you that we are planning to move to two smaller schools within one school. This means that students of all ages will be on both sites. We are going to start this in September 2010 and we will involve parents and students in planning this throughout the next school year. We are excited about this because and it means that we can introduce vertical tutor groups and also as was stated in the April newsletter:

Students will feel that they are in a small school on one of the sites rather than in one very large school

Teaching and learning will improve because most teachers will have their own classroom to teach in and will not be spending time moving between sites

Pastoral care and discipline will improve because most teachers will remain on one site and will be available to support students and chase up problems.

The major implication for parents and students is that parents will be choosing the school not the site. Students will be allocated to a site by the school to ensure that there is a mixture of boys and girls, abilities and ethnicities on each site. Where possible siblings will be placed on the same site.

We want parents, students and other members of the local community to be involved in our plans. We will be holding more consultation sessions next school year and we will send you out information on these in September.

I would like to wish all of you a satisfying summer break. Staff start back on Thursday 3rd September, Year 7 and 6th form registration on Friday 4th September, and all other years on Monday 7th September. Siobhan Leahy Headteacher

We are not just about classrooms you know!

At ECS we value ourselves as a learning community. We know that not all learning happens in the classroom and that sometimes a young person or their family needs a little extra help to empower them to fulfil their potential

We run a wide range of extended school activities and our curriculum has a broad range of enrichment opportunities. Subjects and year groups offer trips to students to help them experience learning in practical settings, team build, visit examples of fine art, the theatre – and lots more. Your child will bring home letters about these but check the website to see photo’s and reviews of past trips and check for further details. We also offer extra support in core subjects, subject based clubs, revision and coursework catch up groups, homework clubs and a wide range of academic support. Your child might be invited to attend or they might want to drop in or attend groups regularly. Remind them to put the times and dates in their planners.

For more able and talented children we have an extended learning program and we also want to encourage our students to have high aspirations for the future. Our Aim Higher co-ordinator will be o f f e r i n g v i s i t s t o u n i v e r s i t i e s a n d information and activities to help broaden your child’s horizons. If you want further information we will be adding links to university web sites and student information sites to our website. Encourage your child to read these to help them make valid decisions about future career choices. Our school is part of a wider school community and we take part in many competitions. We have strong teams in many sports and we are also successful in other competitions for instance in Science, Dance and Technology. All students take part in our Technology Days – o f f e r i n g t h e m a n opportunity to gain new skills on a technological theme. This has included a Ready Steady Cook competition with our own catering team, producing short films, designing and painting murals and p l a n n i n g t h e n e w Technology and Memory gardens. We offer a wide range of

extended school activities from sports, multi gym, media clubs, martial arts, cho i r , ka r t ing and astronomy. More will be starting in September and reflect the students’ suggestions and requests – check the website for more information and suggest your child checks their year group notice boards and the extended school boards in the canteens. We also have a breakfast club on both sites (upper from September). This is free for students who are entitled to free school meals (and most trips are also subsidised or free please contact the school for details) or £2 a week for a ticket. A healthy breakfast is a wonderful start to the day and we encourage all students to use the clubs.

We will be welcoming two new workers to our team in September; an Extended School officer who will be organising many more activities for our students and the wider community, and a Family Support worker. We recognise that it is hard work being a parent and sometimes a little extra help or advice can help you help your child to succeed. Our new worker will be organising workshops that will include

“Surviving Exams”, “Horrible Hormones: Surviving Teen years!” and beyond. We will also be launching a parents web resource giving help and tips, running some family learning days as well as offering one to one support where necessary.

We work with many c o m m u n i t y g r o u p s offering our support and resources to some, for instance English classes for parents’ and carers to enable you to support your children at school., the Silver Surfers, an Age Concern group who are learning about web use, and also in using their resources and experience to offer voluntary placements for students, help and support for families and their children and mainly to enhance the learning experience at ECS.

Work Experience: Important Information

Year 11 students will be on 2 weeks work experience from 14th September. Students all have places and must contact employers for interviews if they haven’t already done so. It is essential that they do this or their placement may not go ahead.

If any problems arise during the summer, please contact the borough work experience team on 0208 443 4252 or 0208 805 6494 between 9am and 5pm and speak to Karl Arthur or Karen Norris. They will be pleased to help. Please do not wait until the beginning of term to resolve any issues: there will be very little time left then to make any necessary rearrangements. Finally, thank you for your support with work experience: approached with commitment and enthusiasm it is a great learning experience for the students.

Sue Hughes Work Experience Co-ordinator

Turkish & Somali Coffee Mornings During this academic year a new initiative has taken place to support the families of Turkish speaking pupils. Coffee morning meetings, which have been well supported, have taken place for Year 7 pupils’ Turkish speaking parents. Parents met and were given information regarding how the English Education System and school systems operate. Information has been given to increase the understanding of how the school organises its learning and teaching. With greater understanding of how the system operates parents feel that they will be able to support their children’s education more fully. The parents are very supportive of the school, parental concerns were recognised and hopefully addressed, and a more transparent manner is developing. Key members of staff have been introduced to the parents, and as we know putting faces to names is important. It is proposed to continue these meeting next year and extend them to other year group’s parents. A parallel Somali parental meeting was held in June with the support of Hussein Nur from the Enfield Library Service. It is proposed to develop these meetings to give similar information that has been given to Turkish speaking families. John Waugh - Emag Co-ordinator

Primary Technology Experience

During the last week of our old timetable, Edmonton Counties Technology Department welcomed Year 5 classes from Churchfields, Galliard, Firs Farm and Raglan Primary Schools.

Over the course of the week 350 pupils experienced a one-day Edmonton County Technology project – Electric cars were built and raced along the library corridor, name plates and key fobs were designed and manufactured using a computer controlled laser-cutter, very tasty fairy cakes were made and sampled, and personalised t-shirts were decorated with a variety of textiles techniques.

The pupils all enjoyed an excellent experience, and are keen to get back for some more Edmonton Technology!

The 14 - 16 Celebration This event took place on Thursday 7th May 2009 at Cineworld in Enfield. The annual awards evening brings all vocational training partners and schools together with families to celebrate student success. We average 30-40 students a year on vocational courses at Enfield and Southgate Colleges, Capel Manor and North London Garages. Out of just over 50 awards Edmonton County Students achieved 15, including 2 out of the 6 Student of the Year awards for Jonathan Frasi in Motor Vehicles and Daniel Harrold in Animal Care. We were by far the biggest school award winner in the authority. This reflects the strength of our work with the partners and in particular the success and dedication of Sue Hughes in working closely with the partners to ensure students keep on track. All award winners are listed below. Please congratulate them if you see them:

Since January we have been fortunate to get 3 different pop artists coming into school to give ‘praise assemblies’ for our student who always do the right thing.

One artist, Pixie Lott, was so impressed with our students she asked to come back a second time, so more students got to see her perform. All artists sang a range of their own material as well as some cover songs and spent time interacting with out students allowing them to asks questions and get signed autographs. Our students as always were a credit to us during the concerts, hence the number one

artist Pixie wanting to come back for more! I would also like to say a big thank you to all students for supporting our no bags, food or drink

policy on the field. Please can I remind students that lockers are provided for their use at lunchtime, please encourage your child to use them. Bags should not be left unattended. Should your child choose to leave their bag around we cannot be held responsible if anything goes missing.

We are trying to ensure that we do our best to keep a litter free environment so we need all of your help and ask that students eat only in the designated areas. These are the canteen and the area with the picnic benches. Students must not eat on the playground or inside the building other than the canteen. When bits of food fall from their sandwiches they attract the seagulls, mice and rats.

We are also experimenting with serving (at break) grab bags from the playground. Initial feedback from students is that they like this for two reasons. Firstly they find the queue more ordered and secondly the canteen less crowded. This idea came from the kitchen staff so please thank them.

We appreciate any feedback you or your child may have. You can send this either by email to [email protected] or by encouraging your child to come and to speak with me directly.

How to improve the reading of twenty or so Year 8s – let them become reading teachers for Year 1 children! We have taken part in a borough wide initiative and it has been successful beyond our wildest dreams! Our students have shown great maturity and skill and the primary school children from Latymer All Saints have really enjoyed the experience too. The Year 8s were divided into two groups and went to the primary school on alternate weeks. On the other week they stayed in school and prepared for their next session. They

worked to lesson plans and prepared word cards in advance as well as reading the story together. Each week the younger children were given a new picture reading book, for example, Elmer the Elephant, The Rainbow Fish and Anancy and Mr Dry Bones. Staff involved were Linda Nevin-Drummond, (Senco), Jackie Doyle (Assistant head of learning), Marcia Findley, (lead TA) and TAs Lina Marra, Sarah Fisher and Jenny Price. The walk proved good exercise for all especially in the hot weather. We hope that this project will continue from September and we

may be able to involve other primary schools. Linda Nevin-Drummond, SENCO

Year 7 Science Club We decided to enter the Science Borough competition, but first we had to come up with an experiment. We decided to calculate the amount of sugar in different fizzy drinks compared to what it said on the label. For the experiment we needed to buy a few fizzy drinks, evaporate 100ml of each drink using a Bunsen burner and weigh the remaining solid. We took photos during the experiment to show for evidence. We entered our experiment into the competition which took place at Oasis Academy. Before the results there was a fantastic science show. We received a certificate of ‘commendation’ and took a photo with the Mayor. We then celebrated the following week with pizza and drinks.   Julian Kozah Science

Enterprise Day Year 9 spent a practical day on starting and operating a travel business, under the supervision of NatWest bank. The hands on activities included starting a company (name, logo, letter head etc), understanding typical roles and responsibilities within a business which they had to adopt, and providing a service to meet their customers’ needs in direct competition with each other. The students took on the role of tour operators, whereby they had to plan and organise an educational visit for students and teachers to New York which includes flights, accommodation, meals and excursions. All this had to be carefully costed within budgets and a final quotation made.

Needless to say the competition became fierce. The students had to justify their financial budget and quotation, and make a final presentation to the class. The students had a valuable and enjoyable experience and their feedback identified a range of skills and knowledge developed including, how to manage money, working together in a team, planning a business event, communication skills, using computers effectively and making a presentation. Clearly the next generation of budding entrepreneurs.

Here is just a brief summary of some of the more recent enrichment activities our More Able and Talented (MA&T) students have participated in during the 2008-2009 school year. On Tuesday 23rd June, the final in a series of Year 6 and 9 collaborative “conferences” took place at Hertfordshire University. These sessions allowed our Year 9 students to work with MA&T students from other local schools to produce documentaries using some of the latest video and editing technology. For the first session back in October, they worked with other students in the same year group. Following that, our Year 9’s took a leading role sharing what they had learned with younger students from Year 6. During this most recent session, the topic was called “a day in the life of a university student” and should be available to view on YouTube. That wasn’t the only MA&T University trip this year, however! In April, thirty of our top mathematicians in Year 7 went to Hertfordshire University for a Maths Challenge. In December we also had a group of sixth formers go to Cambridge for a “Cambridge University Challenge Day”. Back at the School, the Year 7’s had an opportunity to fine tune their thinking skills in a workshop facilitated by 20/20 learning while the Year 8’s focussed on creative thinking skills. The (new) Year 11’s also benefited from a collaborative learning workshop geared towards developing skills which will prove useful both in the classroom and beyond. The newly founded sixth from debate team is making good progress and will be welcoming all students from the upper school to take part starting in September. We also had a team of students at the lower school take part in the London Borough of Enfield Mayor’s Award for Debate Competition. Bhumika Dave (Year 9) took third place in the Key Stage Three Competition. Heather Smith Teaching Assistant

More Able & Talented News

Hello and welcome Year 7 I am sure your children are all excited and looking forward to starting with us in September. I am aware that although exciting the transfer to secondary can be daunting and maybe even a little scary. The biggest hurdle we have to overcome is making new friends, as we all know that once we get to know the people we’ll be working with things are a lot easier. That’s why we have organised a Year 7 Team Building Trip to Surrey. All Year 7 students are invited to take part in this exciting activity filled weekend, leaving school on Friday (25th Sept) and returning back to London on the Sunday afternoon. The whole point of this is that we all go away together make new friends from different primary schools, and learn about cooperating with each other and the teachers. This promises to be a really rewarding and enjoyable trip and the more that take part the better it will be!

I am looking forward to meeting students and their parents and am very keen to get to know everyone. Students’ time at Edmonton County School potentially could be some of the best times they will ever have, and remember all staff in the school want them to be successful. Success is almost guaranteed if they remember my 4 key points :

Come to school every day on time Wear the correct uniform Have the correct equipment for your lessons Have a positive attitude!

If these are all in place they will learn and importantly MAKE PROGRESS!

Enjoy your summer holidays and I look forward to seeing your children on Friday 4th September. Sonia Bardouille - Head of Learning for the new Year 7

Year 7 Inter-Form Rounders Competition

Since May, Year 7 students have been participating in an inter form rounder competition, organised by Ms. Boniface and myself. After a hard fought group stage, semi finalists were 7 Einstein, 7 Hawking, 7 Lovelace and 7 Turing.

7 Lovelace took on 7 Turing in the Final, after losing to them by 1 rounder in the round-robin stage.

7 Lovelace won the flip of the coin and decided to field first, doing some fantastic fielding: catching/stumping a number of 7 Turing out. When it was their turn to bat, they played a slightly more tactical game, getting 1 rounder and lots of ½ rounders.

7 Turing batted superbly: hitting 4 rounders and getting some ½ rounders. When it was their turn to field, a couple of errors were made, but they still managed to get six of 7 Lovelace out.

It was a nail-biting wait while the scores were counted ... 7 Turing 8 - 7½ 7 Lovelace So well done 7 Turing on winning the competition. Actually there weren’t any losers, both forms should be proud of their efforts in all of their games.

Thorpe Park

Saturday 23rd May saw 270 pupils from the lower site on a day trip to Thorpe Park. This was run as a reward trip for pupils who had excellent behaviour. The very sunny and warm day was made even warmer by the excellent behaviour of ALL of the pupils we took. Although lots of the staff were too scared to get on the rides, the pupils took all of the opportunities open to them. All of the staff were impressed with the behaviour of the students, and we’d like to thank the staff involved, along with parent volunteers, for giving up their precious free time to make the trip as successful as it was. Also, many thanks to Ms. Boniface, Ms. Doyle and Ms. Todd for organising and making the trip come together. Attendance Rewards On Friday 26th June, 10 Year 7 pupils were taken to Forty Hall for a celebration organised by the London Borough of Enfield for pupils with 100% attendance. They were: Joshua Mensah, Eser Yaman, Ade Osinowo, Vivian Huynh, Nimaya Abhayaratne, Deborah Amoakoh, Benjamin Forson, Lucy Brewer and Nurhak Derin.

They all received certificates and prizes for this achievement, and listened to the comedian Richard Blackwood who delivered the key speech.

Additionally, they were proud to be presented with a shield for Edmonton County, as a reward for the most improved attendance in an Enfield Secondary school. Congratulations to them all, and lets hope that we continue with this excellent achievement in attendance.

GROWING MAD What’s happening to Edmonton County? Students are growing mad! Well done to all who have contributed to the gardening club planting broccoli, cabbages, tomatoes and flowers. We are looking forward to a good crop when we return in September.

GOING GREEN

Students have also been contributing to make our environment eco friendly. Year 9’s don’t forget we must continue our good work on recycling and take our good practice out in to the community.

READING PROJECT

What a beautiful sight it has been to see our students working with children from a local primary school. Thank you to our Year 9’s who have not only being working hard on reading skills with the primary school children but have in addition brought a smile to their own faces as well as a smile to the faces of the children they have been working with. The two groups have been a credit to Edmonton County. Sue Patel - Head of Learning for the new Year 9

“ Thank you so much to all Year 11 students who made the changeover of the timetables run so smoothly. You have now officially progressed to your final year at Edmonton County! I am sure that you will continue to improve in your maturity and sensible approach to your studies, but I do have to remind you that time is running out before you can see this change! At Christmas of this year you will be sitting your final mock exams, which will be what people in colleges and 6th Form will be looking at before they accept you onto courses for next year.

I have already told the students that after 13 years I will be leaving Edmonton to move on to another school. As much as I will miss them, I know that they are in very capable hands and they are sensible enough to push themselves towards their goals. I wish them all the best and am hoping I will still be invited on their leaving ball this time next year! Thank you, well done and PLEASE push yourself as hard as you can for those grades! I leave the students in the very safe hand of Sarah Malone who is taking over as Head of Learning for Year 11. I wish her all the very best. Tim Naylor Head of Learning - Year 11 (former Year 10)

Year 10 have had an eventful term and they have risen to the challenge! Well done! The Year 9 prom was a complete success. Students looked so smart and they all behaved fantastically. A good night was had by all – Rhianna was definitely leading the way on the

dance floor

Congratulations to everyone who has made a good start to their GCSE courses, they have realised that the journey to their future has well and truly started and that has been clear from their focus and hard work since beginning Year 10. A few members of the group will need to remember that their future is in their hands and I will expect to see them ALL coming back with a focussed attitude to their studies after the holidays.

All that’s left to say from me and Mrs Todd is, its been great moving to upper with them and we look forward to working hard with them over the next 2 years. Have a great Summer! Michelle Harper - Head of learning for the new Year 10

It has been fantastic to have the new Year 13 back these last few weeks after the exam period. With a bit of sleep and relaxation under their belts the Year 13 have come back ready to start the next stage of their studies as well as help out

around the 6th Form; exactly what they have been doing! Thank you to all the students that have been so helpful during 6th Form Orientation – we could not run this programme with the new Year 12 without the Year 13’s help and even today they are helping with the tidy up! It was so excellent to see so much ‘leadership’ and ‘role modelling’ going on – it’s those conversations between Year 12 and 13 about the jump between GCSE and A Levels and the demands of the new year that are so valuable.

By the end of the term the Year 13 will have completed all the prep work for the UCAS process so that all applications are ready for post results updates and then for sending in late Sept/Oct. It is important that the students ensure they are doing the independent work on this – it is vital that every student has really thought through their choices. Finally – good luck with results; if things don’t go as expected we will sort everything out on Friday the 4th of Sept during enrolment for the Year 13 which will be between 1.30 – 3.30pm in the hall. Have a great summer break!

Ange Levesque - Head of 6th Form

Congratulations to all Year 11 students, we made it! I am so proud of every one of them. I know that the exams period was difficult and became for many of them a very stressful time. On the whole their focus and commitment during the exams weeks has been commendable, and I am pleased with the way they conducted themselves during that busy time.

Our end of school Boat Party was absolutely fantastic and a great testament to the way that they have approached their time at Edmonton County. The evening was filled with humour, fun and lots of energy. I am sure they all had a great time and I know that all the staff that were there felt it was the best boat party they had ever been on!

I have had the pleasure of working with Year 11 students for the last 4 years as their Head of Learning, it hasn’t been easy but it definitely has been enjoyable. I’ve seen them develop into mature and responsible young people and I’m very proud to have worked with each and every one of them. Do not forget that their GCSE results can be collected from school on Thursday 27th August between 10.30am and 1pm, if they cannot get them on the day they will be posted home.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all parents and carers for the amazing support and encouragement that you’ve given your children and the school over the last five years, we could not have done it without you.

All the best for the summer guys, in whatever pathway you have chosen to follow. I wish them all luck and happiness. Please keep in touch and feel free to contact me if you require a reference!

Sonia Bardouille - Former Head of Learning -Year 11

Over the past two years, we have been attending the Cambridge Fast Forwards Mathematics course. We were three out of the forty students chosen from the many who applied for this fantastic opportunity. During the morning and afternoon, we were given some talks on how Maths can be linked to real life and we participated in various problem solving activities at residentials in Cambridge. Each night we had an activity arranged for us to take part in, these ranged from a ghost tour of Cambrige to punting, bowling and even a sports night. Seeing as we had not met anyone else before we arrived, these activities were a great way to get to know everyone and by then end of it we had all made many new friends. Sadly, this month will be our last visit to Cambridge – it has been a great opportunity, we have learnt many new mathematical skills, developed our problem solving and study skills and learnt how to meet new challenges.
