A SMALL COLLECTION OF CHAPBOOKS IN THE FOLKLORE SOCIETY'S LIBRARY

IN the Society's library is a small collection of chapbooks, bound into a single volume (180 x 115mm). The spine of the volume bears the title Chap Books and it is to be found in the Library's Reserve stock, at class No. A6 MIS. The book contains fourteen individual pieces, although, as will be seen from the descriptions given below, not all of them would be normally described as 'chapbooks.'

The collection was apparently put together by one David Fitzgerald, as the flyleaf bears his ink signature, with the date '23.9.85,' and several of the individual pieces bear his initials. Also on the flyleaf is the comment 'Bound Jarvis 5/-' in Fitzgerald's hand, although a stamp on the opposite page claims 'Bound by S. Kaufmann.' The volume came to the Library as part of the Wright Collection in the 1930s.

Imprint on front cover: 'London: Printed in St. John's Lane, Clerkenwell, by S. Fisher, and Sold at No. 30, Warwick Lane, Paternoster Row; May also be had of all other Booksellers in Town and Country,' and on back cover: 'Printed by S.
