A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah

Seek the LORD while he may be found,

call him while he is near.

Let the scoundrel forsake his way,

and the wicked his thoughts;

let him turn to the LORD for mercy;

to our God, who is generous in forgiving.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts,

nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD.

As high as the heavens are above the earth,

so high are my ways above your ways

and my thoughts above your thoughts.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

R. (18a) The Lord is near to all who call upon him.

Every day will I bless you,

and I will praise your name forever and ever.

Great is the LORD and highly to be praised;

his greatness is unsearchable.

R. The Lord is near to all who call upon him.

The LORD is gracious and merciful,

slow to anger and of great kindness.

The LORD is good to all

and compassionate toward all his works.

R. The Lord is near to all who call upon him.

The LORD is just in all his ways

and holy in all his works.

The LORD is near to all who call upon him,

to all who call upon him in truth.

R. The Lord is near to all who call upon him.

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians

Brothers and sisters: Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death.

For to me life is Christ, and death is gain. If I go on living in the flesh,

that means fruitful labor for me. And I do not know which I shall choose.

I am caught between the two. I long to depart this life and be with Christ,

for that is far better. Yet that I remain in the flesh

is more necessary for your benefit. Only, conduct yourselves in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus told his disciples this parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. Going out about nine o’clock, the landowner saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.’ So they went off. And he went out again around noon, and around three o’clock, and did likewise. Going out about five o’clock, the landowner found others standing around, and said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day? ’They answered, ‘Because no one has hired us. ’He said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard.’ When it was evening the owner of the

vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.’ When those who had started about five o’clock came, each received the usual daily wage. So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage. And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner, saying, ‘These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day’s burden and the heat.’ He said to one of them in reply, ‘My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?’ Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last.” The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

R. Alleluia, alleluia. Open our hearts, O Lord, to listen to the words of your Son.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

SAINT PIO OF PIETRELCINA (1887-1968) September 23 Did the World War II American flyer really see Padre Pio in midair, preventing the bombing of his village below? Did Pio actually "bilocate" in Italy, the Holy Land, even America, as countless witnesses testified? Or "read hearts" before penitents spoke? What of the stigmata, Christ's wounds imprinted on Padre Pio's hands, feet, and side? John Paul II, who as a young man visited Pio, never mentioned these extraordinary elements at the canonization. Instead, the pope spoke of "trials accepted with love," referring perhaps to sanctions restricting Pio's faculties for hearing confessions and celebrating public Mass, imposed because of criticism, later discredited, sent to the Vatican; of Pio's offering his sufferings in union with Jesus' passion for a suffering world; of his continual availability to sinners seeking direction and absolution; of Padre Pio's prayer that blossomed in charity, especially through his "House for the Relief of Suffering," a healthcare facility that anticipated by decades today's holistic partnering of medical science and spirituality. Finally, how comforting for us "ordinary" Christians, this extraordinary saint's most frequent advice: "Pray, hope, and don't worry!" -Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

RCIA, The Right of Christian Initiation, is for anyone in need of baptism, persons baptized in another Christian faith but interested in becoming Roman Catholic, and persons baptized Catholic in need of First Communion and/or Confirmation. RCIA is a process, not a program. It is an ongoing process of conversion fitting to the needs and call of each person seeking a deeper relationship with Jesus in the Roman Catholic Church. If you or someone you know is interested in RCIA, please join us on Thursday, September 24, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the Religious Ed Library. For more information, contact Jerome Ibarra, at [email protected] or call 504-835-0324.

Despite holidays and tropical storms, St. Angela Merici’s catechetical formation programs are off to a running start. Parish School of Religion officially began on Tuesday, September 8, with lesson plans being sent to families remotely. Students in grades 1-7 are utilizing the Spirit of Truth series from Sophia Institute Press while our high school students are using the Didache series from My Catholic Faith Delivered. Both programs are fully digital, providing families with interactive activities and catechists with monitoring capabilities. All lessons are completed on a weekly basis. Our hope is that this new catechetical approach will allow our partnership with parents to truly flourish as we work together to form these children in the faith. Confirmation groups, meanwhile, met for the first time on Thursday, September 17. Teens have been assigned to gender exclusive Disciple Groups (D Groups) which meet approximately twice a month. Each D Group is led by two safe environment trained adult mentors. This year, we are using the Y Disciple program for Confirmation preparation. Its innovative platform and methodology are designed to help form and evangelize teens through relationships. Though catechesis is certainly part of D Group gatherings, their primary goal is to foster relationships among the teens, with their adult mentors, parents, and most importantly with God. Please continue to keep all of our PSR students and Confirmation candidates in your prayers as they begin this important journey. In Christ, Audrey Huck Catechetical Director

Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our Archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family.
