SIDESTREAMDEAMMONIFICATION:PILOTTESTINGTHEANITATMMOXPROCESSATTHEJWPCP byDanielGaryAt the May 2015 LABS dinnermeeting, Mr. Michael Liu of theSanitationDistrictsofLosAngelesCounty (LACSD) presented theagency’s recent pilot testing of adeammonification process forsidestream nitrogen removal.Nitrogen is found in ammonia(NH3), its ionic state ofammonium cation (NH4+),organic forms of nitrogen andinorganicformsofnitrogen.Attheagency’s Joint Water PollutionControl Plant (JWPCP) in Carson,CA, nitrogen removal is notrequired at this time but maybecome necessary in the futuredue to regulatory or water reusedrivers. Presently, the JWPCP isdesigned to remove BOD andsuspendedsolidsonly;conversionof a BOD and suspended solidsremoval‐only plant to includenitrogen removal is estimated tocost in excess of $1 billion (20‐year life‐cycle cost). Treatmentofthe JWPCP’s high nitrogenconcentration sidestream withdeammonification technologies isexpected to significantly reducethiscost.Thetechnologythatwasevaluatedwas Kruger/Veolia’s ANITA Moxprocess, which came in twovariants: (1) MBBR (Moving BedBiofilm Reactor) and (2) IFAS
(IntegratedFilmActivatedSludge).TheMBBRvarianthousesthetwogroups of bacteria essential forthis process: the ammoniaoxidizing bacteria (AOB) and theanaerobic ammonia oxidizingbacteria (AnAOB), on biofilmsgrown over plastic carriers thesizeofquarters.Thisarrangementallows the aerobic AOB access tooxygen, while protecting theanaerobicAnAOBfromoxygen. Incontrast, the IFAS variant housesthe AnAOB within biofilmsoverlaid by a thin film of AOBs,whilethemajorityoftheAOBsarelocated within the mixed liquor. The IFAS arrangement helpsminimize the oxygen masstransfer limitation of the MBBRvariant, allowing the IFAS variantsignificantlyhigherthroughput. The LACSD tested the systems tosee if they were applicable fornitrogen removal from JWPCPproducedcentrate,whichcontainshighconcentrationsofNH3(intheformofNH4+)andtotalinorganicnitrogen (TIN). Centrate iscurrently treated at the JWPCPusing dissolved air floatation(DAF) before the centrate isreturnedtotheplant.Twosourcesof centrate were examined: onebefore theDAF and one after theDAF. The LACSD investigated the
NH3andTIN removal efficienciesandrates, theprocess’robustnessagainstcommonupsetconditions, and quantified the emissions oftwo greenhouse gases (GHG). Itwas concluded that ANITA Moxcan remove JWPCP centratenitrogeneffectively, withtheIFASsystem demonstrating more thanthree times higher capacity thanthe MBBR variant. The MBBRsystem was shown to be robustagainst six scenarios tested, withcompleterecovery in lessthan48hours.IntermsofGHGemissions,the IFAS system emittedsubstantially more nitrous oxide(N2O) and methane (CH4) thantheMBBRvariant.

Los Angeles Basin Section Dinner and Presentation
Evaluation of Source Water Control Options and the Impact of Selected Strategies on Direct Potable Reuse
The presentation will provide an overview for theWateReuse Research Foundation (WRRF) study, titledEvaluation of Source Water Control Options and the Impactof Selected Strategies on DPR (WRRF-13-12), which willevaluate upstream wastewater treatment impacts onDirect Potable Reuse (DPR) source water quality andDPR treatment processes, and asses the impact ofhydraulic control mechanisms on influent water qualityand flow variations that "stress" the DPR process.
