The Easter Bunny will be coming to Epworth, Saturday morning April 4th, at 11:00 AM at the Epworth Tower Park. Please be on time for the egg and candy hunt as the children only take about 15 minutes to find all the easily accessible bounty. There is always plenty of treats for everyone. Children, up to age 10, should bring a bag or basket to carry their goodies.

Everybody in Epworth Has a StoryCan the world hunger problem be solved? Will a woman go to the moon? According to two young women from Epworth, the answer to both questions is “yes”, and they are setting out to be the ones to do it. After graduating from Western Dubuque High School, both Alyssa Dougherty (2016 grad.) and Emily Silich (2017 grad.) were led on career paths far different than what they originally thought they would be doing.

Alyssa’s original major was in dietetics. Her interest was peaked in this area in high school when she wrote a paper on global food challenges for the World Food Prize Foundation. Her interest with this organization, continued through her freshman year at Iowa State. Prior to her sophomore year, she was chosen to be a Borlaug-Ruan Intern, which led her to Guatemala. There she was part of a research team that conducted a study on adding protein to women’s diets by adding whey to soup.

Back on campus, she joined the Ames Food pantry for Iowa State students and the Ames community. She became a member of the Global Food Challenges Emerging Leaders for Food Security with Land of O’Lakes. This led to an internship with Land O’Lakes, which took her to Minnesota, Indiana, Washington, D.C., Malawi, and South Africa. After returning home, with her passion for human rights fueled, she added a major in Global Resource Systems to her studies. She also started a fundraiser on campus that raised over $10,000 (with Land of Lakes doubling the amount she raised), to help abused children and teens in South Africa.

In her junior year, she became familiar with Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, which took her to India for nine weeks, where she did studies on micronutrional deficiencies and helped with nutritional instruction programs in tea gardens.

This small-town Iowa girl, daughter of Ron and Julie, wants others to realize the impact one person can have both locally and globally. The last time a person in Iowa won a Nobel Peace Prize was Norman Borlaug from Cresco in 1970. Maybe the next one will be from Epworth.

Much like Alyssa, Emily Silich, daughter of Paul and Linda, started out in one field but was drawn to another. She planned on majoring in neuroscience before college started, but changed her field of study so she could become an astrophysicist with the hope of

3someday being an astronaut and working on NASA’s Artemis Project. With this Space Launch System, the spacecraft Orion will be taking the next man and first woman to the moon in 2024, and eventually to Mars!

Rarely does an undergraduate student get accepted to work on a prestigious research program such as the HaloSat mission at the University of Iowa, which is funded by NASA. However, Emily began working as an undergraduate researcher, performing pre-flight payload performance analysis after her freshman year, based on the recommendation of her Physics professor. This project placed a satellite into orbit outside of planet Earth. She led an investigation into the X-ray spectrum of the Vela Supernova Remnant and is currently analyzing data sent back by the spacecraft.

That project led to a field school experience in January of 2019 in Norway, (one of two people permitted to attend from America) where she helped build a GPS system to guide space rockets. This has spiked her interest in studying instrumentation. She actually participated in this program while doing a semester abroad studying in Canterbury, England!

Currently, she is a junior at the U of I and is the secretary for the Society for Physics organization, plays her flute at Mass at the Newman Center and piccolo for the U of I pep band. This summer, she will be interning at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center at Greenbelt, Maryland, working in a laboratory on a High Energy Photoelectric Polarimetry project. Goddard is critical in carrying out NASA’s missions of space exploration and scientific discovery. So she is on her way to “chasing her dreams.” Maybe someday, Epworth Citizens instead of looking up at the “man in the moon” will be proud of the Epworth woman “walking on the moon”!

Way to put the town of Epworth on the world’s radar, Alyssa and Emily, while making the earth a healthier place and the universe seem smaller!

What a Fall it Was for Western Dubuque School Athletes! The 2019 football team took the state by storm by winning the State 3A Football Championship, beating Solon 37- 17 on Thursday, November 21st in Cedar Falls. At the same time but in a different place, the WD Girls Varsity Volleyball Team gave its all to win the Second Place State 3A Volleyball tourney.

The Girls Cross Country teams also qualified for a state run. Cade Messer represented the Boy’s Cross Country at State, Davis Stelzer was a golf state qualifier.

WDHS Special Olympics teams had 9 athletes advance to State Competition on November 23rd. All nine of the athletes came back with medals—8 Golds (first place) and 1 Bronze Medal (third place).

News Around TownSecond Fire in Pizza Factory ComplexDave and Karen Koss, owners of the building that houses the Pizza Factory, Epworth Radio & TV, Heiberger Insurance, and formerly Cox Optical, are still considering the future of the building after a fire on September 20th destroyed an upstairs apartment and caused smoke damage to the businesses on the bottom floor. A previous fire in 1998 damaged the Pizza Factory section of the building. Known previously as the Maxwell Store, it is one of the oldest in the city, having been built in the late 1800s, and has previously housed a general store, grocery, hardware, and flower stores.

Dougherty's Added to the WD Hall of FameCongratulations also to Jim and Sheila Dougherty for their 2019 induction into the Western Dubuque High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Jim was involved in baseball and basketball and graduated in 1954. Sheila began playing basketball in the seventh grade and continued to play until she graduated in 1956. In a game against Monticello, Sheila scored 69 points. During her career, she scored 3,604 points. Both have been involved in WD school athletic programs and have attended baseball, softball, football, track, and wrestling games for decades. Text contributed by WD Athletic Booster Club

Iowa Education Association Honors Phil KramerPhil Kramer, now retired Dubuque School District Executive Director of Human Resources, was the recipient of the TEAM (Together, Educators and Administrators Make it Happen) Award for 2019. Epworth Country ChristmasThe City of Epworth celebrated Christmas in grand style with its Second Annual Epworth Country Christmas. With the cooperation of the weather, the streets were filled with hundreds of local residents and visitors enjoying the luminaries, music, food, live Nativity scene, vendors, special business offerings, and even a visit from the Grinch and Santa Claus. The planning committee is headed by Elaine and Mike Capeck with local organizations pitching in to help, such as the Boy Scouts, Epworth/ Placid Knights of Columbus, Epworth fire personnel, and Divine Word College. If you would like to help with the 2020 planning of this event contact Elaine at 563-580-8329, or City Hall 876-3320. Photos next page.

Message from the MayorSandy Gassman

Thank you to everyone involved with Epworth Country Christmas. The volunteers, churches, businesses, and those who at-tended all helped to make it a memorable event. The next one will be held Wednesday, December 2, 2020. Mark your calen-dars. If anyone would be interested in helping with next year’s Epworth Country Christmas, contact City Hall (876-3220) and leave your name. You will be contacted when the planning begins.

Thanks also goes out to everyone involved and supporting and organizing Santa coming to Epworth. Santa, his elves, and many volunteers along with the Epworth Legion, Epworth Fire Department, Epworth Family Dentistry, and Epworth Head Start make this event possible every year. There is nothing more special than watching the eyes of a young child whispering his or her Christmas wishes into Santa’s ear. This same group will also be making sure the Easter Bunny arrives on April 4th.

Thank you to all.

The Fifth Avenue Street reconstruction will begin this spring in late April or early May, depending on weather. This will mean rerouting traffic in the area as work progresses. The City and the construction company will do everything possible to mitigate the inconvenience. Please be patient! Watch the Epworth website for updates.

Epworth needs a slogan! The new owners of the DB&T building would like to paint a mural on the side. They would like it to welcome people into our community. It would be nice if we could include a slogan, but in my research, I have been unable to find an Epworth slogan. So, we are having a contest. Send or call City Hall (876-3220) with your suggestions or get them to me by March 15th. The slogans (with no names attached) will be reviewed by the council at the March 25th Council meeting.

Did you know Epworth has a flag? In doing research about the slogan, I found that Epworth had a contest to design a flag about 30 years ago. The winner was Fred Kramer. We found the flag at the Historical Society and will be incorporating it, along with the new slogan, into our City branding information whenever possible.

Epworth Fire DepartmentChief Thomas I. Berger, Epworth Fire

2019 once again set a response record for the Epworth Fire Department as we responded to 259 calls for service over the past twelve months. This was twenty more calls than our prior record in 2018. Seventy-five percent of the calls were for the ambulance service, which is consistent with national trends and is on a steady increase. Not included in our incident numbers are the many other request for public assistance that we respond to. This could include standing by at football games, public events, marathons, and other such events with a higher risk of needing fire or EMS response. I would like to publicly thank our volunteer members for their dedication and commitment to make sure each call for service is answered promptly. Remember to please dial 911 for emergency and non-emergency ambulance transports, fire, or for law enforcement.

On January 11th, we held our annual recognition President’s Party. During the ceremony, Firefighter Ron Dougherty was honored with the 2019 Firefighter of the Year award. Ron has been an active member for nearly 20 years and is often one of the men working behind the scenes fixing mechanical issues or reworking some electrical wiring for us. He is always willing to take on extra projects for the department. Ron served as an EMT and his wealth of knowledge is always welcome at fire and rescue scenes. Lieutenant Jeff Bohle was recognized for his 20 years of service to the department after retiring in 2019. Jeff served as President and also served as the President of the Dubuque County Firefighters Association. Toby Hancock was also recognized for his 22 years of service to the department. Toby was an active member until he moved away, but remained a non-traditional firefighter for many years after. He is now an officer and active member of the Riverside Fire Department, where he resides. Both members were presented ceremonial axe plaques. We are grateful to them for the many dedicated years they served the EFD.

The annual appreciation dinner is also a time to thank and recognize all the wives and families for their patience and understanding. The training, meetings, and the calls for service are demanding of the volunteers’ time, and their families sacrifice by allowing the members to attend.

To start this year out, we had our Iowa Department of Public Health Bureau of EMS inspection and recertification. I must commend the committee who lead the charge to make sure all of the paperwork, files, training, supplies, and vehicles were in proper order for this inspection, which occurs every three years. We completed the on-site inspection without any deficiencies and are authorized for another three years to provide service.

The Epworth Fire Department will soon be starting the process of our annual fundraising events. This year the dance will be held on Friday, May 22nd and will again serve as a great kick off to the Memorial Day weekend. The 72nd annual Epworth Firemen’s Picnic and Silent Auction will be held at the Epworth Fire Station on Friday, July 10th. More information about these events, and updates and information about the department, will follow in the next issue of the Voice of Progress and on our website at www.epworthiowafire.org. We wish everyone a safe and wonderful winter, and hope for an early spring!

Epworth Police DepartmentJames Kauffmann, Epworth Police 563-876-3050

The Epworth Police Department would like to remind everyone to make sure your headlights are activated on foggy mornings. Automatic headlights don't always turn on because of fog, which can make it difficult for you to be seen by other motorists and pedestrians. With warmer weather just around the corner, please keep an eye out for walkers/joggers, bikers, and motorcyclists. We want everyone to have a fun and safe spring. Please remember to pick up after your animals when walking them. The City of Epworth has wonderful facilities for pet owners to use, including a dog park and a walking trail. If everyone does their part, it makes a much more enjoyable experience for everyone. Please have your pets registered with the City of Epworth. It is a one-time cost of $3. If your pet does get loose and is located by the Epworth Police Department, if your pet has a city tag, we can verify the owner and return him/her to you. If we are unable to identify the owner, we take the animal to the Dubuque Reginal Humane Society for safe keeping at which time the pet owner will have to pay to have the animal returned.

From your mailman:Thank you to those who cleaned around their mailboxes and removed the ice from their mailboxes after the January 11th ice storm. That was very kind of you.

We Move the Earth

Rusk Metal Company sits on Main Street/ Old Highway 20 going east out of town and has been there since 1999! That’s a long time, especially if you’ve never noticed their presence. At the time owner Don Rusk built the building, there was only a house on the corner of Bierman Road and another home/ business on the next street over. My how we have grown!

Along with Don and a crew consisting of his brother Bob, nephew Aaron Gatena, and longtime employee Steve Driscoll of Epworth, the company recycles “industrial metals,” as opposed to “obsolete metals.” The business is not open to the public as the metals recycled come from larger businesses that are within a 100 mile radius of Epworth. The scrap metal is picked up by appointment only, and later will be melted down and reused.

Don and his crew have strict guidelines about storing and processing the metal they collect. The metals are stored above ground in containers, and, generally, it doesn’t stay around long. Metals are sorted according to grade, cleaned, and trucked as soon as the process is complete.

Another resource they collect is referred to as “Dross,” a byproduct or “slag” of aluminum. It must be carefully handled, so Don and his workers had to be certified to process this product. Fascinating!

Don mentioned that being in Epworth with his business has been good, not only for his business, but also for how well the city has worked with him. Thanks for your business, Don, and thanks for supporting the city!

Minister’s MusingsI shared the following story on the 4th Sunday of Advent as part of my homily:

“Somehow Bob forgot his wedding anniversary. He didn’t give his wife a card, gift, flowers...He simply forgot all about it. His wife was very upset and angry. He begged her to forgive him and pleaded for something he could do to make up for his mistake. His wife said that since Christmas was right around the corner she wanted a gift in the garage that would go from 0-200 in 7 seconds. Bob woke his wife on Christmas morning and told her that her gift was in the garage. She ran down the steps, entered the garage, and there it was--a brand new, brightly shinning chrome-plated bathroom scale! Bob was never heard from since!”

Although remembering your spouse in some way on your wedding anniversary is a good idea, and surely can be a bonding event in one’s commitment to a husband/ wife, a card, gift or a dinner out does not guarantee a sound, holy, happy faithful marriage for life. The same is true for me as a priest. Simply celebrating in some way each year my day of ordination and first mass does not guarantee faithfulness to my vows or make me a holy minister of the church. Sound, healthy, lasting relationships with those we make a commitment to is an ongoing effort--whether the relationship is with a spouse, with a family, or with God.

I am obviously wanting to support all healthy relationships with married couples and their families, but I am most focused on our relationship with God. Most of us seem to remember the anniversary of our Lord’s birth and the anniversary of His resurrection--the huge crowds in our churches on Christmas and Easter witness to that fact. But where is there any proof of our commitment to God the rest of the year? There is no question that many Christians do not pay much attention to an obligation to worship, to gather in prayer, and “Keep Holy the Sabbath.” Something to think about in the New Year!
