Message from the ChairmanAnn Tidwell Chairman, Metro Greenways Commission

Although not surprising, it is great to receive affirmation that greenways are ever popular

and in high demand. In fact, greenways and trails, along with more park land and open space, were

the highest ranked needs in the extensive Plan 2 Play survey process.

P2P, the master plan update for the countywide parks and greenway system, will be finalized early in 2017, and there are already exciting new greenways being identi-fied. A greenways technical subcommittee of P2P, comprised of Greenways Commission members and representatives from the P2P steering com-mittee, have made much progress in developing recommendations. Five new greenway corridors are recommended in addition to over 20 high-priority segments along Davidson County’s seven

main water corridors. The priorities have a strong focus on enhancing Nashville’s multi-modal transportation network and connectivity, as well as continuing to conserve natural resources.

Greenways for Nashville helped develop and pro-mote a greenways-specific survey, and over 1500 responses were received with many thoughtful comments. Thank you to those who participated.

For more information about P2P, visit plantoplay.nashville.gov and stay tuned for the completed plan that will help Nashvillians get there on the greenway!

Join us and participate in 615Rocks on the greenway! If you see a painted rock on the greenway, pick it up, take a photo, and post

it on your Facebook or Instagram page. You can also join the fun and paint new rocks and hide them on your next greenway walk. Help us spread the love all over our city by participating in this new trend called 615Rocks! You can purchse rocks to paint at Home Depot. Remember to leave natural rocks and plants alone.

When you post your photo, be sure to share it with us! #Greenways4Nashville •

“ The greenways are one of the benefits that make Nashville a desirable place to live. In my own neighborhood, the greenway has fostered socializing among neighbors, exercise, and family activities.”

“ Thank you for a wonderful greenway/bike path system. I know more about Nashville now through biking although I’ve lived here my whole life.”

Message from the PresidentMark Deutschmann President, Greenways for Nashville

Thank you for all you do to further the goals of Nashville Greenways! We have made great

progress over the past 10 years, and now have over 85 miles of greenway trails, which means that 65% of Nashville’s neighborhoods are within 1-mile walking distance of a greenway.

We are fortunate that the Mayor Barry administra-tion and our Metro Council are providing strong support. The recent annual capital budget included $5 million dedicated to enhancing Nashville’s greenway system. Homeowners value walkability, and greenway access now commands a premium. As our city updates our Metro Parks plan with its 10-year strategic initiative, Plan2Play, it is appar-ent that greenways are a most valued asset of the park system.

We now have a unique opportunity to fulfill the ur-ban greenway system. Our urban interstate system, beginning with I-440, circles our city and con-nects all of our corridors. We know that Nashville is ready for a comprehensive multi-modal trans-portation network, and greenways offer a relatively low cost option to connect people to corridors, bicyclists to the city, and Nashvillians to exercise.

I’m excited to report that the pilot section of the 440 Greenway, which will connect Elmington Park to Centennial Park, is starting. The design phase is about to begin on a second section, which will

connect neighborhoods in 12 South to Melrose. From there, bigger plans call for a connection along Brown’s Creek to the Fairgrounds, and even-tually all the way downtown to Rolling Mill Hill.

The 440 Greenway will be part of a big loop circling our city. Much like the Beltline in Atlanta, the Cultural Trail in Indianapolis, the HighLine in New York City, and the Cross Charlotte Trail in Charlotte, N.C., this loop can provide both access and economic opportunity for many urban neighborhoods.

Greenways for Nashville has initiated a public/private partnership to help Metro move the 440 and Brown’s Creek greenway projects forward. We are raising $1 million towards this effort and appreciate expressed support by Mayor Barry and council members to make this vision a reality. GfN will be launching funding opportunities for indi-viduals, corporations and granting organizations in the next year. This will include crowdsourcing, presentations, and call campaigns. Let me know if you’d like to support the legacy of our city with your contribution!

Thanks!

Mill Creek Greenway – Mill Creek Park to Orchard Bend Park.

Construction will begin this Winter on expansion of the existing 1.75 mile trail from the trailhead behind Mill Run subdi-vision, downstream to a new trailhead on Pettus Road. Looping through the soon-to-be constructed Orchard Bend Park, the trail will terminate at the blueway access constructed by Tennessee Scenic Rivers Association on Mill Creek. This new trail will add 2.0 additional miles to the greenway. A new connector trail will also be constructed, linking Hidden Creek subdivision and the greenway to the Thurgood Marshall Middle School campus on Pettus Road.

Cumberland River Opry Mills Greenway Connector is under planning with a TDOT grant application pending.

Anticipated since the Cumberland River Pedestrian bridge was built, this connector will run along the river cliff between the bridge to the low-lying mall and hotel complex. It will connect residents of East Nashville, Donelson and Hermitage to the employment and entertainment centers at Opry Mills, and connect tourists to Shelby Bottoms and downtown. The views will be awesome!

Harpeth River Soccer to Highway 70. Design is underway on this connector, with construction planned for summer

2017. This segment will provide important connectivity from the greenway to businesses and restaurants on 70 and new projects replacing Bellevue Mall. It will also separate greenway access from the soccer complex with a new stand-alone trailhead facility off Coley Davis Road.

Whites Creek Fontanel Phase II. Construction is coming this spring on an expansion of the existing trail. This segment

will connect the former Cedarwood property to the community garden across Whites Creek Pike to the south. A northbound ex-pansion to Old Hickory Boulevard is also in the design phase. Our thanks to the Fontanel folks for the right of way and partnership.

On the Horizon:Browns Creek Greenway at Fairground. Planning and design are beginning by Metro for improvements to the

Fairground facilities and campus. This will include coordination with Metro Parks for incorporation of a greenway trail, dog park and park multi-purpose fields.

North Gulch. Expansion of the Gulch greenway is under-way. It will run on the north side of Charlotte Pike at the

Capitol View project (HCA and Lifeway new facilities under development) and will connect to a planned pocket park on Jo Johnston Avenue. The project is a public/private partnership between Metro and Capitol View Joint Venture and an important step toward closing the greenway loop to the Bicentennial Mall. •

Celebrate What Connects Us The 10th Annual Dinner on the Bridge, benefiting Greenways for Nashville, was

held on September 29th on the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge. After a windy day and a drizzle of rain, the sun began to shine, and a rainbow emerged just as guests arrived. The event was a delightful success, with stellar entertainment by aerial-ists Beyond Wings and a fabulous dinner by Johnny Haffner. Mayor Megan Barry was in attendance to help toast Metro Parks Director Tommy Lynch in celebration of his 45 years of service and March 2017 retirement. Co-Chairs for this magical evening con-necting friends and greenways were Brooks and Bert Mathews, Cayce McAlister, and Mary Ellen Lovell. •

Greenways for Nashville not only works to provide Nashvillians a

safe and healthy place to walk, bike and skate, but we also know how to have fun while doing it. GfN worked with That’s Classic Media to create a music video about Nashville’s Greenways. The video features Nashville Mayor Megan Barry, Metro Park Police, Ms. Nashville, Jack the Wallaby, and T-Rac, Gnash and Booster the Rooster all coming together for Greenways.

Check out the video on our new website at greenwaysfornashville.org and sign up for our e-mail list while you are there! •

Nashville Junior Chamber

Greenways for Nashville is very honored to be this year’s charity partner with the Nashville Junior Chamber. The NJC provides opportunities for

its members to connect with other young professionals and established busi-ness leaders while engaging in unparalleled hands-on professional develop-ment and leadership training. NJC has kicked off the year with a successful Lip Sync Battle and a Casino Night, and we are betting that their annual Wine & Dine and Rajin’ Cajun Crawfish Boil will once again bring Nashvillians together for a great time and a great cause! •

“ The Nashville Junior Chamber Board and Membership are proud to support, through our fundraising efforts, such a great organization this year whose mission is to enhance and preserve the greenways in Nashville: one of the reasons we love living here.”
