COPACABANA PUBLIC SCHOOL Effort Earns Success

On Wednesday 27th July, the Copacabana Public School athletics carnival was finally held! Although we were nearly blown off McEvoy Oval by the wind, it was still great day out in the sun! All students involved showed excellent house spirit, participating in events and cheering for those who were racing.

A big thank you to the house captains (and their parents) for assisting in setting up and taking down the equipment; to Mrs Lucas for all of her organisation behind the scenes; to all of the staff for making the day run so smoothly; to Mr Rippon for his assistance in running the carnival; to the P&C for a tasty BBQ and canteen, and to all of the students for making it a great day! Well done!

Ribbons Assembly will take place Friday 12th August.

If you have a spare minute, could you please log onto https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PHM5Z88 to complete a quick survey and provide some feedback about the carnival.

Thanks again,

Mr Frew

Science Week at Copacabana Public School

As part of ‘Science Week’, which takes place in Week 5, 15th – 19th August, Stage 2 & 3 students will participate in an interactive Science program called ‘A Case of Discovery’. We have been very lucky to secure this spot as this is a very exciting, popular program. Students will be faced with opportunities to solve a ‘real-to-life’ crime scene investigation brought to the school and presented by a company called ‘Education Interactive’ who visit schools both nationally and internationally delivering this program. For 90 minutes each child will participate in forensic evidence experiments where they will be lead through the case whilst learning about how chemistry, physics and biology can help solve crimes.

Don’t worry! We haven’t forgotten K-2, who will be engaging in three half hour, practical Science sessions. Each lesson will be full of discovery and fun! Sessions include creating a lava lamp, making magic with milk and soap and plenty more…

We are positive that we will see plenty of intrigued and keen students ready to participate during Science Week. Who knows, we might even discover some budding scientists within our school here at Copacabana!

Finally, a special thanks to the P&C who have fully subsidised the program, ‘A Case of Discovery’ and have also provided funding for the K-2 Science sessions. Your support and generosity is greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Brittany Anderson, Nadege Green, Thomas Goard

Kincumba Shines What an amazing show!!!! On Wednesday night I was privileged to attend our Local Management Group’s combined celebration of Education Week 2016, Kincumba Shines. It was a wonderful showcase of the marvellous talent we have in our local schools and Copacabana Public School’s contribution was absolutely fab-ulous. Parents and families should be very proud of the way in which your children conducted Themselves at the event and the wonderful performances they put on for the huge audi-ence that was in attendance. I was very proud to have witnessed our children enjoying their moment in the spotlight. I would like to thank Miss Holmes and Miss Hall for all the work they put into our polished presentations, as well as Mrs Mumford for her sup-port on the night. Vicki Woodham Assistant Principal Kincumba Shines was held on Wednesday the 3rd of August at Kincumber High School. This event showcased the creative and per-forming arts talents’ of students from the Kincumba Learning Community. Audiences were welcomed on entry with stunning artworks on display from all classrooms at Copacabana PS. Our school choir, which featured students from Years 1 to 6, combined with Avoca Beach PS, Kincumber PS and Pretty Beach PS to entertain audiences with their vocal talents. This included ‘Lion Sleeps Tonight’, ‘Roar’ and ‘Fight song’. After spectacular performances at the Central Coast Dance Festival at the end of Term 2 our Year 6 girls and boys dance troupes repolished their dance moves and were seasoned professionals at Kincumba Shines. Stage 3 students were fortunate enough to be invited to attend the dress rehearsal and enjoy the talents of our local primary and high schools. Their behaviour at this rehearsal was terrific and made us very proud. This was another opportunity to celebrate our brilliant community and all students should be extremely proud of their involvements. An enormous thank you to Mrs Woodham for her behind the scenes organisation of Kincumba Shines! Jaimi Holmes Dance Co-ordinator

School Sport

Well done to Lara who played in the Sydney North team at the NSW PSSA Hockey Championships at the end of last term. She was the only Year 4 student in the team, which consisted mostly of Year 6 girls. Lara scored 3 goals and the team came 5th overall. Congratulations, Lara!

PSSA Girls Soccer - Round 5

Last Tuesday the stage 3 girls soccer headed off to Umina oval to compete in Round 4 of the PSSA lockout competition. The girls were versing Woy Woy Public school and showed tremendous courage after conceding 2 goals early on. The found their Rhythm after half time and didn't let the opposition past them again. After dominating possession in the second half the girls were unlucky not to score. Going down to Woy Woy 2-0 at full time. Congratulations on an amazing campaign. You did your school proud, participating with so much enthusiasm and sportsman ship.

Netball NSW Schools Cup

Last Thursday Copacabana Public School sent two netball teams out to Adcock Park, West Gosford to participate in the Netball NSW Schools Cup. It was a fantastic day with both our teams displaying great sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the day. Our first team, Copa Seahawks won two out of their five games and displayed great tenacity, playing hard and chasing down every loose ball. Our second team,

Copa Kestrels also achieved fantastic results, winning four out of their five games and showing consistent improvement throughout the day in their netball skills. All the girls were supportive to each other both on and off the court and all agreed it was a great day of netball.

Copacabana Public School would like to thank Michelle Ferlazzo and Amy Prentis for coaching one of our netball teams this year. Your time and commitment to the girls and training were greatly appreciated. Also another huge thank you to our two umpires, Hannah Myers and Brooke Goodhand who volunteered their time to umpire our teams on the day. Last but definitely not least, a huge thank you to our parents for transporting our players to and from the venue and making a great cheer squad on the side lines. Looking forward to next year!

Mrs Wilson

PSSA Boys Basketball - Round 4

The Stage 3 boys basketball team competed in Round 4 of the PSSA knockout competition on Thursday the 28th of July. They played very well and displayed fantastic sportsmanship. The scores were level just after half time, but unfortunately we ended up losing to Avoca 26-18. Excellent effort boys you should be proud of yourselves. Mr Rippon

Good luck to the PSSA Girls Basketball team who will be playing in Round 5 of the PSSA Knockout competition. They will be playing against Lisarow Public School at Niagara Park on Friday. If the girls win this, they will be in the Sydney North final. Play hard, girls!

VALUES Education Assembly

Congratulations to the students who received awards last Friday at the Value of the Month assembly for 'PARTICIPATION'. We are very proud of the way in which this group of students demonstrated to their teachers' and peers, and not just during the month of July, what it means to be a fully committed participant in all school sporting and academic endeavours. It is one thing to just show up to school activities and events and be present in the classroom, however, it is entirely different when you do so with enthusiasm and interest, volunteering to go over and beyond what is required. This month we will focus on and discuss the value of 'CARE'. Our next values assembly will take place on Friday the 26th of August in our school hall. All are welcome to attend!

Hi my name is Natalie Isbester and I teach 1N. I have been very lucky this year to share teaching 1N with Nadine Lucas. I am very excited to be with such a lovely group of kids full time now that Nadine is off on maternity leave with beautiful Natalia. I also get to work alongside my brother John Rippon who teaches 1R.

I have lived on the Central Coast all my life and have been fortunate enough to attend local schools. I have two brothers and one sister whom I am very close with. I completed my teaching degree at Newcastle University as did my brother Mr Rippon and our younger

brother is currently at university also doing teaching. I like to think that I started the teaching trend in our family!

After university I started working at Toukley Primary School. I got to work with great staff and a very diverse group of students during my time at Toukley and it was a great experience.

In 2014 we welcomed our first son Jack and my husband and I were over the moon. Jack is a happy and very active toddler who constantly keeps us on our toes. Tom and I got married at the end of last year. With my name changing at school from Miss Rippon to Mrs Isbester some of the students struggled, however my favourite conversation was with one student who asked, “Aren’t you married to Mr Rippon anymore?”

After having my son Jack I started working casually at Copacabana and absolutely loved it! I was very excited on my first day as my brother Mr Rippon had told me what a beautiful school Copa was. He wasn’t wrong! The only part of my day that I was a little disappointed with was when a student asked me if I was Mr Rippons mother!

I have enjoyed everyday at Copacabana School. It is lovely to come and work in such a great

community with great kids and amazing staff.
