What Are the Common Core State Standards?

• The Common Core State Standards identify what students need to know and be able to do in each grade level in order to be prepared for college and career.

• Teachers will decide the best way to teach their students in order for them to meet Common Core expectations.

ELA Shifts

• The standards require regular practice with complex text and its academic language

Complexity

• The standards emphasize reading and writing grounded in evidence from text, both literary and informational

Evidence

• The standards require building knowledge through content rich non-fiction

Knowledge

Measures of Text Complexity

Page 7: A Primer. What Are the Common Core State Standards? The Common Core State Standards identify what students need to know and be able to do in each grade

Math Shifts

• 2-4 key concepts, skills and practices focused on deeply in each gradeFocus

• Concepts logically connected from one grade to the next and linked to other major topics within the grade

Coherence

• Fluency with arithmetic, application of knowledge to real world situations, and deep understanding of mathematical concepts

Rigor

End-of-Year Assessment

• Innovative, computer-based items• Required

Performance-BasedAssessment (PBA)• Extended tasks• Applications of

concepts and skills• Required

Diagnostic Assessment• Early indicator of

student knowledge and skills to inform instruction, supports, and PD• Non-summative

2 Optional Assessments/Flexible Administration

Mid-Year Assessment• Performance-based• Emphasis on hard-

to-measure standards• Potentially

summative

Progress in Social Studies- CCSS Implementation

• Required courses in grades 6-12 have the CCSS for History/Social Studies added at the end of each 9 weeks Pacing Guide;

• Fully embeded K-3 Social Studies Guides will be published August 2013

• Roll out of embedding CCSS into District suggested Social Studies Pacing Guides will match the timeline of District implementation- full scale alignment- 2014-15.

• Common Core Literacy and Writing Standards for History/Social Studies K-5: • • Correlations for Common Core Literacy and Writing Standards for

History/Social Studies, grades K-5, can be found at the end of each topic in the Pacing Guide. When planning lessons for instruction, teachers should address these national standards during their teaching of social studies content to ensure a systematic and proven approach to literacy and writing development. The Common Core Standards are research and evidenced-based, aligned with college and work expectations, rigorous, and internationally benchmarked. For a complete listing of all Common Core Standards, please visit: http://www.corestandards.org. The specific standards for Social Studies K-5 for Literacy and Writing have been extracted from the Common Core Standards document and placed at the end of each topic in the Pacing Guide.

Final Thoughts

• Awareness and sense of urgency• Cross departmental “lift”• Commitment to build teacher and leader

capacity• Need to align instructional materials and

infrastructure• An understanding of the expected

performance cliff in 2015
