We are very pleased to announce that the 2011 Dobcross Calendar is now on sale and already selling fast. Once again it features some really stunning photographs taken by residents and visitors which capture the spirit of our village through the changing seasons. Remember all that snow last winter (and spring)? We expected it to be a perfect photo opportunity and we were not wrong! It is always a sorry thing to have to report when a village business has to call it a day and close its doors. Sadly the landlord of The Shambles has called time on this historic Dobcross pub. Whatever you think of the controversial renaming of The Woolpack, the fact is that Andy Thornton made a real effort to make this Dobcross landmark a success and it was a shame when the pub closed last month. In a report published in September, the National Housing Federation claimed that village life was ’dying out’ due to the closure of village pubs, which it says are ‘the cornerstones of traditional village life’. The British Beer and

Pub Association (BBPA), said 893 pubs closed last year following the recession, increased taxes and charges.

Let’s support our remaining pubs and ensure that they don’t suffer the same fate as The Woolpack. Both The Swan and The Navigation serve delicious home-cooked food daily and serve cask conditioned ales. A REVIEW: Glen Miller, Frank Sinatra, Robbie Williams, Michael Bublé – everyone knows the Big Band sound, so what a treat it was when a special bus took a group of us from Dobcross to Rochdale to hear The Big Shot Swing Orchestra performing with popular Dobcross singer David James (Bottomley).

An evening which promises good music and a ‘hot pot supper’ is never really going to disappoint, but this one outstripped all expectations. The band are made up of top class musicians and the musical director, Alec Wares, had put together a programme of classics such as ‘In

the Mood’, ‘Mack the Knife’, and ‘Moon River’ as well as some incredible Michael Bublé arrangements including the spellbinding ‘Feeling Good’. There were some surprises as well, including a fabulous, swinging rendition of ‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis.

Dave, looking resplendent in black tie, performed with a vocal assurance that showcased his huge talent and versatility. Everyone was enthralled from start to finish and once the dancing got going there was no stopping them. After a rousing encore, with the audience on their feet, the crowd were left shouting for more.

On the bus journey back to The Square, we all agreed it was well worth the trip and we can’t wait until next time.

Dave and the Band have been invited to perform for the Duke of Westminster next week. We are confident the Grosvenors will be impressed. If you are not in His Grace’s social circle, don’t worry, it won’t be long before Dave and the Band return to perform closer to home. Look out for them. Not to be missed!

New School Year Report from Head Teacher, Liz Travis

Our new school year at Holy Trinity Dobcross has started well with children visiting the Church to take part in the Heritage Day. This event was very well organised by the Church team and the children in Key stage 2 really enjoyed learning about coins and finding out about the different parts of the Church. The New Children’s’ Centre at Dobcross School has now been completed and it is already being used. Our Before and After School Club, Squirrels, have taken residence in the building every day to accommodate those children who need care outside normal school hours. Squirrels offer lots of exciting games and activities for the children during this time. Action for Children will be running the Children’s Centre part of the building with many activities planned for both under 5 year olds and parents. Our co-ordinator will let all parents, grandparents and carers know the timetable of events through the Dobcross Diary very soon. As part of the agreement, the school is also able to use the centre for some of the time. We are very fortunate that we are able to hold our music lessons in there. The building is available for use by the community for meetings, small functions etc. If you would like more information or prices please contact the school on 01457 872860. We have lots of exciting events to look forward to this year including a visit from the Expo Chef in October to help us learn about healthy eating and cooking. I am sure our Cub Reporters will keep you all informed about all our activities throughout the year. Liz Travis

Cub Reporters On behalf of the Dobcross Diary readers, the editor would like to thank the Holy Trinity School Cub Reporters for telling us all about life at Dobcross School last year. We wish Jonathan Burke and Katie Huntington well as they start at their new schools. With that, we are very pleased to welcome two new Cub Reporters.

Here is their first report!

“Hi, I’m Lydia and I’m Jake

and we are the Dobcross School Cub Reporters. We will be informing you about what is going on in Dobcross School and the exciting things in store. So far the new Reception class have settled in beautifully and they have met their buddies. The reception children will be introduced to the school shortly by their buddies in a school assembly.

First Prize for Nursery Children from Dobcross Nursery have been celebrating their growing skills. The children planted a variety of seeds and their

broad beans and peas won first prize in the ADULT category at Delph Horticultural Society Annual Show. Jill Smith who works in Nursery entered the vegetables into the competition.” Lydia & Jake

Not the Last of the Summer Wine The Saddleworth Wine Appreciation Society

began in 1987 as a night-school class with a tutor, a Master of Wine, who taught the group all about tasting wine. “Everyone can learn to taste wine it is simply a matter of practice. Think while you drink and, by using words and associations to describe what you see, smell and taste, try to remember the wine in your glass, so that you would recognise it again”. This we did for 3 years and the tutor left so we became a group and organised ourselves and have been doing so ever since. It’s interesting, good fun and we are still learning. The maximum number of members is 20 – we are currently 17 – and we meet every Tuesday during term-time at Saddleworth School. Each week one of us leads the tasting: decides on a theme, purchases the wine (8 bottles), makes some notes about the wines such as country of origin, grape variety, appearance, smell and how it should taste and we all taste and comment. Two or three times a year we invite a speaker from either a wine suppliers or makers and occasionally have a trip out. This year we had a really interesting visit to Holmfirth Vineyard - an amazing effort by a young couple who have set it up from nothing, planted 7,000 vines by hand in 2007 & this year have won two awards for their white & rose wine. We were given a tour of the vines (in pouring rain), a talk about how they built up the business, their plans for the future & finished with a tasting of their excellent wine. We would be delighted to have a few more members and anyone interested should contact me, Janet Baker via the Dobx Diary. (Anyone interested in a tour of Holmfirth Vineyard can contact them at www.holmfirthvineyard.com)

All this recent talk of mysteries and horror films started me thinking about some of the more rational explanations that lurk behind the spooky happenings that I am sure we have all encountered at one time or another in out lives. Like the mysterious knocking on the ceiling or floor that turns out to be an airlock in the heating pipes or ventilation system or a faint voice in the empty lounge that turns out to be a faulty kid’s toy dropped down behind the sofa. You know the sort of thing - sometimes seriously scary but often ludicrous when you know what it is. In fact I suppose our recent experience with the crows could even go some way to explaining the legendary phenomenon of The Banshee, a malevolent shrieking spirit and harbinger of doom, infamous in Ireland for rattling the house windows of its hapless and terrified victims... I remember one frosty October night when my mother-in-law urged me to

investigate a noise she could hear outside. She was convinced that there was a ghostly child, crying in the old stone stable at the bottom of the garden. I ventured out into the crisp, cold air and, strangely enough, I too could hear a distinct mournful weeping

sound coming out from the darker recesses of the creepy derelict building. As I approached the black entrance there was a sudden silence. Then I saw bright eyes flashing and I was nearly bowled over by two amorous foxes streaking out of the darkness and away down the drive. I have though, once, seen what we would all recognise as a ghost. I was in the woods at night when I noticed a white form drifting directly towards me through the gloom, its appearance was preternatural and eerie. It was quite distinct in torchlight and as it passed silently by it looked exactly like the pictures of ghosts you see in every Hallowe’en or scary children’s storybook. It had a white domed head and two large black eyes and was sort of fuzzy around its base. It turned out to be a barn owl. If you ever see one of these creatures flying at night, you too will understand exactly where the iconic Hallowe’en ghost image is conjured up from.

A.S.

Allan Sharples of Ladcastle, Dobcross, continues his entertaining accounts of village life. In previous episodes, he has solved the ‘Mystery at Ladcastle’ & made peace with ‘The Birds’. Could it be that calm has at last descended on the Sharples household? Not likely. Read on. (If you dare….)

Poetry please Dear Editor, I bet I am not the only one who really enjoyed the Diggle Blues Festival and came away wondering, why doesn’t Dobcross have a festival? Perhaps Dobcross is too refined for the blues, and that is why I came up with a poetry festival. Wouldn’t it be great if we could get a well known poet to lead a poetry slam session where we can all join in?

So let’s get this place heaving With our Dobcross tongues weaving.

Ugh, don’t think I’ve much of a chance. Bill Edwards Editor’s note - If poetry doesn’t grab you perhaps someone can suggest an alternative theme for a festival?

Childhood memories of Dobcross

Dear Dobcross DIary Thank you for letting me know that the 2011 calendars are now on sale. My daughter purchased two for me at the Brownhill Visitors Centre after I received your message. The pictures brought back many happy memories of my childhood and are beautifully reproduced. Thank you once again. Gillian Edge. So glad you like it. Thank you. If you would like to share some of your memories, I am sure the Dobcross Diary readers would be interested, so we would love to hear from you… Ed.

Rushcart Jockey videos Hi Michael My name is Dave Wilde, and I was the Rushcart Jockey this year. Just to say many thanks for the videos you uploaded to the website and Youtube, especially the one of the leaking kettle of beer the lads sent up for me. Classic stuff. Thanks again Dave PS If you have more footage I would love to see it, as I’m sure the rest of the side would. Thanks for the comments, Dave. There are

some videos on the Dobcross Diary website www.dobx.net More videos are on the Dobcross Diary YouTube channel (search for Dobcross Diary - username: DobxNet) Editor’s note - If anyone has some more good footage out there, let me know.

Skills Swap Dear Michael. Watching BBC 2 Money Watch recently, I thought the skills swap site was a great idea in these hard economic times. What about starting one in Dobcross or Saddleworth? I would love an experienced joiner to fix a shelf which insists on leaning forward. and someone to colour my hair occasionally. I could give Garden

Advice. (I’m a retired designer). I could also help Applemac novices, window and shop display for small businesses (20yrs experience West End and Manchester etc.) and much more. What do you think ? Regards Ros Ashworth (Mrs.) I think this is a great idea, Ros. We could have a regular ‘Offered’ and ‘Wanted’ column in the Diary and even something on the website. Why not? If any readers would like to join in to help Ros out or if you have any other skills, please get in touch via the Dobcross Diary.

Bring me Sunshine, Bring me Smiles Michael, I thought this picture that I took of the Saddleworth Morris Men sums up the great feeling of fun that was had by all at this year’s Rushcart Festival in Dobcross. I would like to thank the lads & everyone involved for entertaining us so well every year. Bob Taylor Thanks Bob. What a great memory of a great day. I can only echo your thanks to Dave Wilde and the Saddleworth Morris Men for all they do to make this strange village just that little bit odder. Ever so slightly bonkers, but that’s what we like. (Great shot, by the way. One for next year’s calendar competition? Keep them coming...)

Dear Friends & Neighbours Dobcross Band and Social Club has been operating from it’s current location for the last 99 years and we want to continue into our centenary. We have carried out substantial repairs and refurbishment over the last two years to make it a comfortable, welcoming environment for everyone who uses it’s facilities. This work means that the resources of the club are now very stretched. Dobcross Youth Band (which provides a sound musical education as well as functioning as the local youth club) Dobcross Silver Band and Trainer Band all practice there on a regular basis and the bowling teams practice regularly and enjoy wonderful views as they play. The people who have celebrated weddings, christenings and birthday parties there have praised the facilities and atmosphere. Just book your celebration through our steward John either at the club or on 01457 873741. Now, we cannot continue on a long term basis without the support of users and people in the village who want our culture and heritage to continue. Please use the Band Club, become a member, pop in for a drink, have a celebration here, come to a band concert or a quiz or join a band or the

bowlers. Our next quiz night is on 6th November. You would be most welcome, children are always welcome.

The current economic climate is making things difficult for pubs and clubs and you will know of the many closures that have taken place. If this happened the village would lose a valuable, historic asset. If this happened the bands and bowlers would have to try and find alternative

venues for practising or these tremendously important institutions would be lost. Please help us to ensure the future of Dobcross Band and Social Club. There must be a fantastic range of skills within the village. If any of you feel that you could offer advice or expertise that would help us economise please contact us. We would especially like advice on ways to promote our facilities both within and outside our community. Contact Michael Lucas on 07746 876947. Any donations or practical help would also be gratefully received. John Dewhurst Secretary (Dobcross Band & Social Club)

Community Payback Would your club, church, or street corner benefit from some building maintenance or a clean-up? At a Homewatch meeting last month, local co-ordinators were challenged to find work for offenders under the Community Payback scheme. Beware of Bogus Callers If you heard a knock at the door and a man with his son asked if they could get their ball from your garden, would you go and help search for it? If an official looking man came to the door and asked you to turn on the taps to check for ‘blue dye’ in the water would you stand watching the tap for him? Ask yourself what could be happening in your property if you have left any of the

doors insecure while you help out. Unfortunately, these are just some of the sneaky tactics that burglars have been using in the Greater Manchester area in order to distract house-holders while their accomplices take a look round and help themselves to innocent people’s property. The police are reminding us all to be wary about letting people into our homes. Always make sure you ask for proof of

identity. Don’t be fooled by a friendly smile and an official manner. A legitimate caller will never mind you checking his or her identity. If you are uncomfortable for any reason, don’t let them in and call the police. It could happen anywhere - including Dobcross!
