Ascended, in Love!

Given that we are between two feasts, the Ascension of the

Lord and Pentecost, in the Gospel reading from this period, that is

from the Gospel of St. John (chapters 14-24), Jesus reveals to us a

new plateau of His relationship with the Father. Thus, He speaks

about the Father, Who is the perfect Love. Very personally, He

describes the relationship between the Father and the Son. The

bond of love between them, guaranteed by the Holy Spirit, is also

explained and Jesus describes the Spirit to be the Spirit of Truth

and the Comforter. These precious details come to prepare us,

who are in the Church, for anew mode to connect ourselves with

God and one another, through light and love. To prevent us from

falling into any heresy, the incarnate Jesus continues to come to us

in Liturgy. Without this we cannot have a complete relationship

with God. (This explains why we are all so affected by this sepa-

ration generated by the pandemic).

After His Resurrection, Jesus “opened the minds (of the apos-

tles) to understand the Scriptures”, interpreting the five books of

Moses, the Prophets and Psalms. From this we conclude that God

pours His love upon all those who love Christ: “Whoever loves

Me, will be loved by the Father” (Jn. 14,21)

Jesus tells us also that it would be profitable for us that He

rises to Heavens, so that He may send us the Spirit, “that may

abide with you forever” (Jn. 14, 16). Moreover, He promises us

that when He will ascend from the earth He “will draw all” of us

to Him (Jn. 12,30). By this we understand the perfect communion

of the faithful with God expressed briefly in the words: “that all

may be one” (Jn. 17,22).

In conclusion, the Church keeps us in the spirit of love. In

Jesus’ Last Prayer, He asks the Father: “that the love with which

You loved Me may be in them” (Jn. 17,26). He rises to this love

and this love He desires for every true follower of Him. He

teaches us, as He taught Peter, whose love He questioned, to tend

His lambs, that is to have love for all men. This love must be veri-

fied by our good deeds. For this reason He tells us all, as He did to

Peter: “You, follow Me!” (Jn. 21,20). The Love Jesus is calling

us, is not the ultimate goal in itself. Its finality is our communion

in holiness and in action with God. These are as endless as is He

who is their source and Who incarnates and sanctifies it! He de-

sires all men to be saved. He is Love Itself, to which Jesus as-

cended.

Înălțat, întru iubire!

Aflându-ne între două praznice majore, Înălțarea Domnului și

a Pogorârea Duhului Sfânt, în citirile evanghelice din această

perioadă, adică, din Evanghelia după Sf. Ioan (capitolele 14-24),

Iisus ne descoperă un alt platou al relației cu Tatăl. Astfel, El ne

vorbește mult despre Tatăl, Cel care este iubire desăvârșită. El

descrie foarte personal relația dintre Tatăl și Fiul. Legătura

dragostei dintre aceștia, garantată de Duhul Sfânt, este de asemenea

lămurită, Duhul fiind înfățișat de Iisus ca: Duhul Adevărului și Mângăietorul. Toate aceste prețioase detalii vin să ne pregătească și

pe noi, cei din Biserică, pentru un nou mod de raportare la

Dumnezeu, și unii la alții, adică prin iubire și lumină. Ca să nu alunecăm în vreo greșeală, Iisus vine la noi și întrupat, în cadrul

Sfintei Liturghii. Fără ea nu avem o legătură deplină cu Dumnezeu.

(Aceasta explică de ce noi toți suntem atât de afectați de separarea

generată de pandemie).

După Înviere Iisus „le-a deschis mintea (apostolilor) ca să

înțeleagă Scripturile”, tâlcuindu-le cele cinci cărți ale lui Moise,

apoi proorocii și psalmii. Din acestea deducem și noi că Dumnezeu

Își revarsă iubirea Sa peste toți cei care iubesc pe Hristos: “Cine Mă

iubește pe Mine, va fi iubit de Tatăl”(In. 14,21).

Tot Iisus ne spune că ne este de folos ca El să se înalțe la Cer, ca să

ne trimită Duhul, „care va rămâne la voi și va fi în voi”(In 14,16).

Ba mai mult, El ne făgăduiește și nouă răsplata: “Iar Eu, când voi fi

înălțat de pe pământ pe toți îi voi trage la Mine” (In. 12, 30). Prin

aceasta, înțelegem comuniunea deplină a credincioșilor cu

Dumnezeu rezumată pe scurt în cuvintele: “ca toți să fie una” (In. 17, 22).

Așadar, Biserica ne menține în duhul iubirii. În rugăciunea din

urmă, Iisus cere Tatălui: “ca dragostea cu care m-ai iubit TU să fie

între ei și Eu să fiu în ei” (In 17, 26). La această iubire se înalță El,

și această iubire o dorește El fiecărui creștin adevărat. Ca și pe

Petru, a cărui iubire a chestionat-o, El ne învață să păstorim

mielușeii, adică să avem dragoste de om. Iubirea trebuie dovedită

de noi prin trăire, adică, prin fapte bune. De aceea el ne spune

fiecăruia dintre noi: “Tu, vino după Mine!” (In 21,20). Iubirea la

care ne cheamă Hristos nu este ținta supremă, finalitatea fiind

comuniunea în sfințenie și în lucrarea lui Dumnezeu care este tot

atât de nesfârșită ca și Cel care o generează, o întrupează și o

sfințește. El este însăși Iubirea la care Iisus a fost înălțat. Pr. Remus Grama

”De Ce arde candela?”

Candela este un pahar cu

untdelemn în care se aprinde un

mic fitil. La fel ca lumânările,

candela aprinsă este asemenea

unei rugăciuni, un omagiu adus

Domnului și sfinților,

simbolizând lumina credinței și

flacăra rugăciunii. Candela

veghează permanent, amintindu-

ne că, la fel, înlăuntrul nostru trebuie să fie mereu

lumină. Ce poate fi mai frumos, decât să porți mereu în

suflet lumina harului și a credinței, flacăra dragostei și a

bucuriei?! Candela se aprinde la icoanele din biserică

sau în casele credincioșilor ca semn de cinstire și slavă,

dar și la mormintele celor dragi în amintirea lor. E atât

de frumos să vezi o icoană în fața căreia se găsește

candela aprinsă: o fărâmă de foc, o picătură de lumină

discretă ce amintește de rugăciune și dragoste, de

credință și mântuire. Toate obiectele sfinte ne ocrotesc:

icoana de pe perete, candela aprinsă care veghează

permanent, parfumul tămâii, agheasma și toate celelalte.

ZOOM MEETINGS

Our church organizations are invited to resume their

regular meetings on ZOOM. The Parish Council and its

Committees, as well as our Youth Bible study are already

doing so.

Last Monday, Chaz Ikes who leads the Bible Study

had 22 young men and women from many Orthodox

churches in Cleveland Metropolitan area for their lesson.

The main speaker was His Grace, Vicar Bishop ANDREI

of Cleveland. He spoke about „The Lord Jesus Christ.”

Father Remus Grama and Father Matthew Thurmann (St.

Luke, Chagrin) attended.

A.R.F.O.R.A. — VIRTUAL CONFERENCE

Since 1938, the women of faith of our Episcopate,

spearheaded then by Preoteasa Sabina Trutza of Cleveland

have come together as an umbrella organization of all the

Ladies’ Auxiliaries from every parish. Ever since,

ARFORA (Asociatia Reuniunilor Femeilor Orthodoxe

Romane din America) held its annual conference by

rotation in different parishes. This year they were supposed

to meet here, at Saint Mary’s, but now the conference will

be virtual. If anyone wishes to honor someone dear, you

may send a donation or place an ad in the booklet to be

printed for the event. Let us show our support to this

worthile organization of our women of faith. In so doing,

we will remember the past, salute the present with

solidarity of faith and pave the next step toard the future of

our diocese!

Thank You, Teachers and Students

The end of May was always filled with gigglings of

children and youth. Graduations and commencements,

proms and picnics are deeply missed this year, due to the

pandemic. Likewise, the traditional ceremony of our

Church School is also very much missed. Since 1932, our

Sunday School has always honored its students, teachers

and parents. Except that, this year, as we know, our

everything was interrupted, classes frozen, joy put on

hold. I feel for the children and we pray that God will

provide abundance of joy for them in other meaningful

ways.

For now, instead of a public ceremony, I am sending my

gratitude in writing to: our Sunday School Staff (Teachers

and Helpers)! I congratulate our students who graduate

and will go to college! I thank the Parents who supported

all our efforts this school year! To all our students,

congratulations! Oh, yes, I know, there will be no Camp

Vatra this year! Oh, well, hope to go next summer, right?!

I wish you a blessed vacation and hope to see you in

church when we open! Remember, God never takes

vacation from us, so, stay in touch!

A Note from Father:

Beloved in Christ,

Though the SARS-Covid19 virus is still around us,

slowly, we are learning to cohabitate with it and

keep it at distance. It will certainly take a while to

defeat our own fear and this takes faith and bold-

ness. Our society is gradually reopening branch

after branch of our economy. It was good to hear the

President of the most powerful nation on earth that

the Church is “essential!” In fact our freedom to

practice our faith distances us from China and other

totalitarian regimes.

You are wondering when will our church be also

open again. As I am writing this note, we have not

gotten yet the green signal to reopen our church.

We are waiting for this every single moment. How-

ever, whenever it comes it will be done gradually.

Meanwhile, we continue attending services virtually

and working on our patience and obedience to our

Archbishop. I thank all of you, especially those who

sent donations, either for membership or for other

special reasons. Without those donations it would

have been hard for us to stay afloat. Please, keep up

the good practice of sending your weekly donation.

It helps us a lot. May God repay you by His Grace!

This week, we rejoice in the Feast

of Ascension and we are getting

ready for the observance of Pente-

cost. The bond of our love for the

Lord, His Church and one another

have been under great stress, but

so far we did not give in. May the

Holy Spirit who have shown the

Apostles to be most wise, sharpen

our faith, perfect our love and cour-

age to follow the Lord.

Christ Is Ascended!

O Notă de la Părintele:

Iubiților în Hristos,

Deși virusul SARS-COVID19 este încă în prejamă,

încetișor, începem să conviețuim cu el și să îl ținem

la distanță. Va mai trece o vreme până când ne vom

învinge și frica, iar aceasta necesită credință și

bărbăție. Societatea noastră își redeschide treptat

anumite ramuri ale economiei. A fost îmbucurător

să auzim pe Președintele celei mai puternice țări din

lume spunând că Biserica este “esențială.” De altfel,

exact libertatea de a ne practica credința ne

deosebește de China și de alte regimuri totalitare.

Vă întrebați, desigur, când se va redeschide și

biserica noastră. Până la clipa când scriu această

notă, încă nu am primit semnalul verde pentru

redeschidere. Îl așteptăm în orice moment. Oricum,

când va veni, suntem încredințați că deschiderea va

fi graduală. Până atunci, vom continua să participăm

virtual la slujbe, practicând răbdarea și ascultarea

de Arhiepiscopul nostru. Vă mulțumesc în mod

special celor care ați trimis donații, fie pentru

membrie, fie pentru intenții speciale. Fără acestea

nu am fi putut sta la linia de plutire. Vă rog să țineți

bunul obicei și trimiteți donația săptămânală. Ne

este de mare folos! Domnul să vă răsplătească cu

Harul Său!

În această săptămână, ne bucruăm

în praznicul Înălțării (Ispasului) și ne

pregătim pentru cel al Rusaliilor

(Coborârea Duhului Sfânt). Legătura

iubirii noastre de Dumnezeu, de

Biserica Sa și unii pentru alții au

suferit recent un mare stress, dar se

vede că nu am cedat. Rog pe Prea

Sfântul Duh, Cel care a arătat pe

Apostoli preaînțelepți, să ne

întărească și credința noastră, să ne

plinească dragostea și curajul de a

urma pe Domnul.

Hristos S-a înălțat!
