Here is the second installment of the 4 part series on Catholic Faith and Culture by Jordan Haddad Ph.D. (Candidate,) learned Associate Professor of Dogma c Theology and the Director of Lay Ministry Programs and Lay Forma on at Notre Dame Seminary. T C I

Every society, no matter how small or large, no matter how ancient or new, is simultaneously both the recipient and the steward of a particular culture. We South Louisianans know this well, for we live in a community whose air is thick with cultural expression and life.

While other parts of our country, and even our state, experience life as the cyclical rhythm of Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring, our common life is marked by Football, Mardi Gras, Crawfish, and Hurricane seasons. While most towns across the U.S.A. might be indistinguishable from one another, filled as they are with the same restaurants, the same music, the same stores, and the same industrial art, there is no denying when you’ve entered Cajun country. The food, the music, and the life, that is, the culture, down here is simply different.

‘Culture,’ though, like ‘time,’ is one of those familiar terms that is easy to define until someone asks for a definition. Although there are many ways one could define ‘culture,’ we can describe it as a community’s common expression of the ideas and values that characterize their shared life together and embody its understanding of the meaning of life, God, and the world. Just as every person dresses, acts, and talks a certain way in order to express and communicate his or her perceived meaning of life, so too does every society manifest its shared meaning through its cultural traditions and customs.

While all of this talk of culture might seem self-evident, I wonder how many of us realize that the Church herself embodies a particular culture and life because she, too, is a society. The Church, we would say as Catholics, is actually the society established by Christ, which is meant to envelope and absorb all other societies on earth, without -- of course -- robbing them of their own independence and autonomy. As Jesus says, the Kingdom of God, which is, ultimately, the Church, can be likened to a tiny mustard seed, which grows into a large tree in which the many birds of the air, that is, the nations of the earth, may reside and build their nests.

Whereas American culture, at its best, is defined and shaped by those pivotal moments in its history, such as the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the abolishment of slavery and the overturning of the Jim Crowe laws, our shared victory over the Nazis in World War II, the Civil Rights movement led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the end of the Cold War, our Catholic culture is defined by those singular moments in salvation history when God manifested himself to his people in increasingly significant ways. These include such events as the giving of the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, the Incarnation of Christ in the womb of Mary in Nazareth, the Transfiguration atop Mount Tabor, and the Resurrection and death of Christ outside of Jerusalem’s city gates. While each of these is significant for the life and culture of the Catholic Church, the Incarnation occupies a special place.

The Incarnation was a wholly unforeseen event from the perspective of the Old Testament, and it remains an impenetrable mystery even for the Church who lives on the “other side” of this event. In the Incarnation, God has not simply spoken or acted in a generic way but has freely and irrevocably become one of us. Whereas people of every time and place have looked upon the beauty, order, and marvels of this world as manifestations of the existence and goodness of God, in Christ we are not only told of God but actually tangibly come into contact with him.

The Incarnation reveals many things to us, but perhaps the most important thing that it reveals is that this created order, our universe and our world, are not as far from God as we would have otherwise thought. In Christ, God not only walked among us but he also spoke our language, ate our food, drank our wine, laughed at our jokes, celebrated our weddings, and experienced our sorrows. While many before and after the Incarnation have thought that one must despise this world in order to ascend to the realm of the spirit, Jesus Christ has revealed to us that holiness is to be found in the midst of the mundane and ordinary.

It is for this reason (and more) that we Catholics, wherever it is that we have walked the earth, have carried within us a genuine love of life, festivity, and sacramental worship. As Hilaire Belloc, the British-French writer and historian once wrote: “Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine, There’s laughter and dancing and good red wine. At least I’ve always found it so. Benedicamus Domino!” In a world that has grown tired and lost its ability to hope, we Catholics have a great secret to share with those around us: God has become one of us, so let us be glad and rejoice.

6 | SAINT LUKE THE EVANGELIST CATHOLIC CHURCH

A NOTE FROM FATHER DAVID Dear friends, Here at St. Luke, one of the words we like to use to describe our parish family is “welcoming.” I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to be welcoming. For example, I looked around at one of the Masses here one Sunday, and counted the congrega on pew by pew, and from what I could tell, about 50% of the congrega on would be considered to be from a minority race or ethnicity. Then I looked at the sanctuary, and over 50% of the ministers as well were minori es. I’m not saying that this

is the case at all of our Masses, but anyhow it gave me hope that all people feel welcome here in the house of God, in a world where minori es are so o en made to feel unwelcome. But I think that as a priest, I need to do a li le more. I occasionally run into the sad story about how someone got divorced, and since then has not been back to church. It confuses me. Everyone needs to worship God, to ask forgiveness for their sins, and to have a prayer life. Perhaps someone told them incorrectly that divorced people can’t receive Holy Communion. Perhaps they just felt too ashamed to go to church, or “not worthy.” Perhaps there were other reasons. In any case, they feel like “second-class Catholics” who are not sure if the Church or God really wants them. Let me clear that up for you right now: Yes, God has a plan for you! Yes, the Church needs you! Yes, you are s ll part of the Church—wounded, maybe, but who isn’t? (Besides newly-bap zed babies, of course.) “But Father David, I know for a fact that divorced people can’t receive Communion; a priest told me!” Well, I’m very sorry he told you that, because he was wrong! It’s only when you re-marry, but God and His Church s ll consider your first marriage to be valid and therefore s ll “ ll death do us part”, that you might not be able to receive Communion. This is why so-called “annulments,” or declara ons of nullity (invalidity), are important, because they are the recogni on by the Church that your previous so-called “marriage” was not valid—the unbreakable bond of matrimony never existed in the first place! But that bond has to be presumed; we can’t decide on our own to get re-married. Fortunately, the Church is here to walk with you in figuring that out. I also run into another sad story some mes: people say that the Church does not want people with same-sex a rac on or various other struggles with gender iden ty to be part of the Church. That’s bogus. Let me say it again: Everyone needs to worship God, to ask forgiveness for their sins, and to have a prayer life. And where does God desire all His children to do this? Within the Catholic Church, and as part of the Mys cal Body of Christ. Since when does iden fying as LGBTQ+ mean that you should not go to Mass or pray to God? That’s messed up. We have let our an -Chris an world (and probably some confused Chris ans) feed us this lie, that God hates gays or whatever other nonsense. God has created every person uniquely and unrepeatably, and God loves every single one of us. God hates sin, because sin destroys us. Everybody sins. Everybody needs to stop sinning and repent. Everybody needs to give thanksgiving and worship to God. Everybody needs the Church, because everybody needs a family. Here’s where the “welcoming” thing comes in: I hereby invite any of you who are divorced and remarried, or any of you who iden fy as LGBTQ+, or any of you who for whatever reason feel that the Church does not want you—I invite you all to come to church, and I invite you all to meet with me and tell me your story. The Body of Christ is wounded as long as we are apart, and so I look forward to mee ng you a er Mass next Sunday! (I would say, “whenever you’re ready,” but the truth is, we are never really “ready,” so just do it now! Come to a daily Mass, or sign up for a Sunday Mass, or at least set up a mee ng with me by email at [email protected].) And I also know that many of you in fact do already come faithfully to Mass, or perhaps you send your kids to CCD or are involved in other parish ac vi es. You sit in the shadows and slip away unno ced. Be assured of this: you are not a “second-class Catholic.” There is no such thing! It’s me that you felt truly a part of our family. Please come talk to me!

What does a dispensa on from Mass mean?

A dispensa on from the diocesan bishop releases Catholics from fulfilling their Sunday obliga on (Mass). Since public Masses are limited in the Archdiocese of New Orleans un l further no ce, this means that if you live in the Archdiocese of New Orleans, the right thing to do is to stay home for your safety and the safety of others. Though there is a sadness for not being able to par cipate at Mass, one should not feel guilty for not going to Mass. You have a free conscience to stay home.
