High School SGA Hosts Taylor Talent Show

by Katie Higgins

Thank you to all the students, families, and staff who attended this year’s

talent show. It was another big success! Special thanks go to all of our talent

show participants, SGA members, and talent teachers for their help and

T I D I N G S F R O M T A Y L O R

The Middle School SGA would first like to thank the HS SGA and junior class

especially for putting on a fantastic “MORP” dance for the middle school stu-

dents earlier this semester. What a great new tradition! The Middle School

SGA is happy to announce that we are currently getting ready for our last

dance of the year, our annual “Spring Fling!” The dance will follow the same

rules as our previous two casual dances. It will take place on Friday, April 17

and will be held at school from 7-10 pm. This dance is for PFTSTA middle

school students only. The cost of the dance is $5 and your ticket price in-

cludes the cost of one snack/drink. The next big event that our reps will be

working on planning is the annual 8th grade picnic, where we celebrate that our

8th graders will officially be entering high school! It will take place on May 15th

at school during lunch. More details are coming soon!

Tidings from Tech Bytes by Kelly Maher

Final exams are fast approaching. Below are ten tools to help students and teachers

create review games, practice quizzes, and/or flashcards in order to prepare for

upcoming assessments.

Game-Based Quizzes

Socrative continues to be one of my favorite tools for creating and hosting review

quizzes. Socrative offers an option for displaying immediate feedback as well as a final

score. It also allows the user to add images to quizzes and host collaborative activities

called "space races."

Kahoot is similar to Socrative, but is slightly more game-like and competitive:

“… educational content is delivered by asking meaningful questions in real-time,

creating a social, fun and game-like environment.” Like Socrative, Kahoot allows users

to add images, and game players can receive immediate feedback, as well as an overall

score.

Jeopardy Style Games

eQuizShow is an online tool that was created by a high school student in New York

state. Users can create and view quizzes exclusively online, without the need to

upload a PowerPoint presentation. Creators also have the option to assign points to

up to six teams or to play without awarding points. Finally, eQuizShow offers a gallery

of pre-made quizzes for efficiency and inspiration.

Jeopardy Rocks, released in September 2014, is a new tool for creating Jeopardy-style

review games. Games can be edited at your convenience, and when it’s time to play,

up to six teams can compete on the game board.

FlipQuiz is another site designed to make it easy for teachers and students to create

and play Jeopardy-style review games. FlipQuiz is free to use for text-based questions.

A premium plan is available if you want to use images in your questions or answers. If

you choose the free plan, your FlipQuizzes are automatically shared into the public

gallery.

Google spreadsheets can do this too. There are a huge number of templates, scripts

and add-ons available for Google Apps. Flippity, a Google spreadsheet script that was

originally developed to created flashcards, can also be used to create Jeopardy-style

games. Watch this video to learn how.

Other Games

ClassTools.net’s web site isn’t pretty. However, in addition to some of my favorite

educational technology tools, like Fakebook, SMS Generator, and Twister, it also

offers templates for creating review games. Check out the Pac-Man or Connect Four

styles, or build a QR code treasure hunt.

TinyTap, available for iOS and Android, allows users to create review games based on

images and diagrams. For example, users can create games in which players have to

identify parts of picture or diagram, or assemble a puzzle by dragging and dropping

pieces into place.

Flashcards

Quizlet’s flashcards, tests, and study games make learning fun and engaging. Further-

more, because Quizlet is available on mobile devices as well as the web, you can study

at home or on the go.

Study Blue allows users to search their extensive library of digital notecards (flashcards)

or create their own. Like Quizlet, Study Blue is also available on the web as well as iOS

and Android devices.

Google Docs Template Gallery offers templates for creating flashcards from a Google

spreadsheet. Of the available templates, I would recommend the one offered

by Flippity.net. This tool allows users to quickly create a set of flashcards which can

include text, images, and videos. Users can even turn flashcards into printable quizzes.

Watch this video to learn how to use Flippity to create flashcards from your Google

spreadsheet.

Lines from the Librarian

by Elizabeth Kahn

Teen TECH Week 2015 was a huge success. Every day the students could visit

the library at lunch for a different activity. These included a game with cell

phones, a movie, a presentation on meditation and mindfulness, a craft activity

with marshmallows and toothpicks, and a photo op using book covers. There

were also five research riddles that students could solve to win a daily prize. Lots

of pictures were taken during the week, and you can visit the library website

here to see them all: bit.ly/PFTSTATTW15.

The 6th and 7th graders were treated to two days of author visits in March. The

first visit was from Peter Lerangis who was touring the country to promote the

fourth book that was recently published in his series, The Seven Wonders. His act-

ing background gave him the tools to entertain the students. He told stories

about his childhood and how he became the writer that he is today and used

varied voices to bring these stories to life. The students laughed out loud over

and over again as he took them on a wild ride through his crazy life before and

after becoming a writer.

Jon and Pamela Voelkel made their third visit to Taylor, and though they got

teachers to eat fried worms again and crowded the stage with students playing

air guitar again, it was all fresh for this crop of 6th and 7th graders who had not

met the intrepid duo before. The Voelkels have had many adventures throughout

Central America where they did research for their books. They also did research

here in New Orleans for the last

book in the Jaguar Stones series. It

was a blast having them return, and

we can always count on them to

put on a great show. Visit the li-

brary website to see all the pictures

Kids Code Class by Lisa Valence Four Tuesdays in March, you could find fifteen students in the computer lab until 5:00

pm learning about coding from instructors from Tech Talent South, a local job training

company. Taylor Tigers learned to code using html and then created their own web page

for an imagined business. Students were highly engaged throughout this program. It was

great that Tech Talent South brought their expertise to our campus at no cost to us!

Thank you!

TVA Students’ Sculpture on Permanent Display

by Linda Patrick

The Jefferson Parish Talent Visual Art

project recently exhibited at NOMA in

the Art in Bloom show was a collabora-

tive piece created by students of 15

TVA teachers. It was comprised of box-

es representing different neighborhoods

in New Orleans. Marissa Nguyen and

Valerie Ruiz contributed a box repre-

senting the University neighborhood.

The sculpture was greatly admired and

now has a permanent home in the lobby

of the Preservation Resource Center,

which is located near the CAC, the Og-

den, and the WWII Museum. The par-

ticipating artists’ schools, including Pat-

rick Taylor, will be acknowledged. It is

an honor to be represented in such an

important and high profile New Orleans

institution. It is also a testament to the

value of the Talent Visual arts program,

its commitment to excellence, and the

quality of our students’ art.

6th Grade Talent Art Students Experiment with Sculpture

by Amy Bryan

Some sixth graders in Talent Art have been creating wire sculptures. They have been learning the uniqueness of

using the material and thinking about three dimensional forms. Their first instinct was often to tape or glue

pieces of wire together. As they got used to creating wire sculptures, they realized that bending wire and link-

ing it together was more effective. Their understanding of creating forms with depth instead of flat outlines

evolved, too. They learned from each other, while still focusing on their individual creations.

Erin Wallace, Janee Kovacs, Julia Hutto, and Sydney Andras now have wire sculptures on public display outside of the art

room until the end of the quarter. Janee created a bird in a cage, Erin and Sydney created trees, and Julia created a narwhal.

Pre-Algebra News

Susie Klusendorf

This April in Pre-Algebra, we've

turned our attention to statis-

tics! We've been learning about

types of correlations in scatter

plots, estimating best fit lines,

and independent vs. dependent

variables. We completed two

creative and colorful scatter plot

projects that now decorate our

classroom, and even flew paper

airplanes — all in the name of

math, of course! With the paper

airplanes, we experimented with

paper size to discuss independent

and dependent variables. Even

though this concept is

traditionally a science lesson, we

related it to our study of linear

equations by determining the

types of variables in a linear

equation. After our

study of statistics,

we will turn our

attention to ration-

al and irrational

numbers as our

year comes to a

close.
