Make Music New York returns for its tenth year,

with over a thousand free concerts on the first day of

summer!

On Tuesday, June 21, from 10 in the morning until 9 at

night, musicians of all ages and walks of life will perform

in over 400 public spaces throughout the five boroughs,

including plazas, sidewalks, gardens, closed-off streets, and

even a pier in the Hudson River.

From established international artists to middle school

choruses, music is played by anyone who wants to take

part — and enjoyed by everyone who wants to listen. Just

like the city itself, the range of offerings is wide-ranging

and expressively free. From Beethoven symphonies to indie

rock extravaganzas, from Punk Island to accordion quartets,

from hip hop cyphers to brass band marathons, there is

something for every listener.

But don’t just listen — join the celebration and make

music yourself! Bring your instrument to a Mass

Appeal event, play a Boomwhacker at the Staten

Island Yankees game, or just sit back and enjoy some

chamber music in Midtown after work.

Use this program as your guide, check

makemusicny.org for late-breaking updates...

or just take to the streets and

follow your ears!

One of Make

Music New York’s

signatures, the

Mass Appeal is back for an

eighth year, giving New Yorkers

without groups of their own

a chance to take part in the

music-making, by gather-

ing hundreds of musicians to

play pieces written for single

types of instruments. There are

more than twenty events this

year, open to everyone from

the complete newbie to the

polished professional.

Highlights of this year’s Mass

Appeals are three new pieces:

Shimmer, Here and The Gaunt-

let. Shimmer is a new work for

cymbals, composed by Brian

Chase of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs

and sponsored by the Avedis

Zildjian Company. It takes place

at Madison Square Park, start-

ing at 3:30 pm. The Gauntlet,

taking place on the High Line,

is another new event. Com-

poser Sxip Shirey calls for two

rows of 30 singers to engage

in a musical dialogue as the

public experiences the piece

by walking at their own pace

through the “tent” of vocalists.

And Here, a Mass Appeal event

for music boxes by composer

Angélica Negrón, takes place at

Transmitter Park in Greenpoint,

Brooklyn at 630 PM. Thanks to

sponsor Kikkerland, the first 50

participants will be able to take

home a music box (and, you

are also welcome to bring your

own!)

An unusual event puts fans

of the Staten Island Yankees in

the position of playing back-

up percussion to Survivior

frontman Dave Bickler. In Eye

of the Tiger, fans will learn to

play Boomwhackers (pitched

percussion tubes) to the chorus

of this famous song.

Returning Mass Appeals will

include accordions, bagpipes,

double reeds, French horns,

guitars, harmonicas, man-

dolins, percussion, pianos,

recorders, stones, synthesizers,

ukuleles, and voices.

Throughout this program you

will see this symbol for each

Mass Appeal event:

Starting at 11am on June 21, eight small mobile re-cording studios will appear on sidewalks throughout NYC. These “Street Studios,” coordinated by Make Music New York and Found Sound Nation, will en-gage passersby and MMNY festival musicians in the spontaneous, collaborative production of original music.

Each street studio will be run by a team of two DJ-engineers. These producers will spend a few hours recording, quick-mixing, looping, and playing back the live sounds, while interacting with the public who stop by to sing, play an instrument, or record sounds that become part of the musical track. The producers will then have two days to mix down one five-minute track to present at the “Street Studio Smackdown” party at National Sawdust in Brooklyn on Thursday, June 23rd (80 North 6th Street, 8 pm to 12 am). Everyone who records material on June 21st is invited to attend.

Find the in this program to find a Street Studio in your neighborhood, and stop by on June 21!

Ever wondered what it’s like to play with a bird? This is the year to find out. New York City’s avian life is celebrated in composer/clarinet-ist David Rothenberg’s Inside the Bird Chorus, conceived as a dialogue between improvising musicians and native bird species of NYC. Mr. Rothenberg will be performing at Brook-lyn Botanic Gardens, and BBG’s resident bird expert will be on hand for

conversation. There will be similar performances by other musicians in all five boroughs: Wave Hill (Bronx), Central Park (Man-hattan), Jamaica Bay (Queens), Fresh Kills Park (Staten Island), all at either dawn or dusk, the prime bird call hours. The Audubon Society will offer free bird walks following select events.

Uptown Funk  is a special project for Make Music New York’s 10th year that will feature funk, jazz, and soul concerts at venues throughout Harlem. MMNY is partnering with Harlem Arts Festival and several neighborhood establishments to bring out local talent in a celebration of Harlem’s American musical herit-age and to create a lively, walkable route full of diverse interpretations of “funk.” As much as Uptown Funk will function as an opportunity to showcase the musicians of Northern Manhattan, the full day of programming will also spotlight community clubs, restaurants, and outdoor spaces that appeal to a wide range of New Yor-kers. Some, like Silvana and The Shrine, have become institutions in Harlem over the last decade, and others like MIST and Corner Social are a bit newer but have made important additions to the landscape all the same. This year promises to be the first of many Uptown Funk celebrations of the music and culture of Harlem.

As part of Make Music New York, “Rhythm on Rikers” returns again for its third year, teaching percussion and cultivating community through music with inmates on Rikers Island. For the first time the program has been focused on working with adolescent men, ages 16-17.  For 10 weeks the percussionists of TIGUE (Amy Garapic, Carson Moody, and Matt Evans) have been meeting regularly with a group of ten students to work on improvisation, time keeping, and ensemble commu-nication.  Using both found objects like buckets, and instruments previously do-nated by REMO, the ensemble with hold a concert on June 21st for the inmates and their families.
