Boy, do I have a mess. My family is in the middle of a big remodel of our 90-year-old house. A new kitchen, insulation, air-conditioning, new roof, lots of paint—it’s been LOTS of work, and there’s still lots to go. And let me tell you, right now, it’s not pretty. But it’s progress. Everything tends toward disorder. So it’s important from time to time to get in there, challenge the status quo, and make things better. At least that’s what I keep telling myself. But it isn’t easy. And throughout this process, I’ve been telling myself three things that I’ve learned in life and ministry that also apply to house remodels. And vice versa. #1: Progress is messy. As far as I can tell, this is true more often than it’s not. Moving forward almost always stirs things up. As I write this, I realize that maybe it’s because progress speeds up entropy. Things disintegrate on their own, but so slowly we don’t notice. Progress gets in there, speeds up the inevitable, and gets it over with so the building can begin. But that in-between time? It’s messy. #2: Sometimes the only way TO is THROUGH. This builds on #1. Often, we want to avoid the mess making progress requires, so we hold back. But, once we understand the only way to get where we need is by going through the mess to the other side, that can give us the motivation we need to do what is best. #3: There will be a day when it’s all worth it. We’ve all worked hard for a short time so we could make things better for a long time. That’s the value of remembering the payoff—remembering that we won’t always be in the mess, we won’t always be in the heat of the battle, there will come a time when we’ll reap the fruit of our sacrifice and hard work. That’s true on lots of levels, even eternal ones, so it’s a principle worth hanging onto. These principles hold true in life, ministry, families, careers, and even following Jesus. Maybe remembering them will help us step up to change when we need to, and hang on even when we’re in the middle of the mess. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (Gal. 6:9) One of the most beneficial and dynamic ministry environments we have a Trinity is our ABFs or Adult Bible Fellowships. Our ABFs are designed to be a place where anyone can come and get solid teaching on a variety of topics. The ABFs bridge the gap between the topical, relevant sermons on Sunday mornings and the intimate and personal relationships that a small Growth Group provides. In each of these three environments, there are different benefits. The ability to worship and learn in unity with other members of the church is a crucial need for every believer. The deep, intimacy that can only be found in a Growth Group is another essential piece to spiritual growth. But there is a need for something in the middle of those two. That is where ABFs come in to play. The ABF environment is an open environment, which means that any person can come to an ABF on any given Sunday. The ABFs are designed to be an environment where you can easily make friends, since each ABF is organized around “life stages.” You are guaranteed to find a group where you can relate to others, and where the teaching will be targeted to you and your unique life stage. No matter how young or old you are, there is an ABF for you. Each of our ABF teachers carefully crafts lessons that will help you gain a deeper understanding of the bible, of theology and doctrine, and of relevant issues related to your life. If you haven’t yet taken advantage of our ABF ministry, why don’t you explore the ABFs this month? They all meet on Sunday mornings, and any Sunday is a good Sunday to get started. You can find information about when and where our ABFs meet in the worship folder each and every week, or on our website. Women’s Summer Study This summer, the women of Trinity will be gathering to study Jennie Allen’s DVD study titled Restless.
