A Note From Dave, Interim 4-H Educator
COVID 19, Fair, and Coping
COVID 19 has little regard for tradition. Typically, we know what 4-H traditions are ahead of us be-cause they show up on the program’s calendar. This virus seems relentless in its drive to punch holes in a well-planned out year. Yes, somethings were and are cancelled. However, COVID 19 could not infect the virtual world. Crook County 4-H accepted the challenge to turn adversity into opportunity. To this day, where it was and is possible, virtual programming has and is keeping well established traditions alive. Without doubt, this is an extraordinarily different time for our community, our county, and our world. For certain, this is a different 4-H year than expected. Unquestionably, this is going to be a dif-ferent fair.
Please consider this in the days, weeks, and months ahead. The youth brain is always under construc-tion. The frontal lobes are where judgment, insight, empathy, and impulse control are found. Youth do know right from wrong. However, they have yet to develop the capacity to avoid poor responses and actions. Youth develop coping behaviors and skills, good and not so good, through observation and imi-tation of friends, peers, families, and adults. Brain cells are constantly on the lookout for new connec-tions that build pathways to clearer thinking, greater loyalty, larger service, and better living.
Now is the time for helping youth make connections and build pathways that will enable them to cope with changes beyond their control. During this unprecedented time, how can all of us make this 2020 fair a positive experience for 4-H members and their families? This is to say, we need to focus our pas-sions on what is possible given circumstances presented to us by an uncaring COVID 19. Let’s demon-strate some grit and not let COVID 19 intrude on a great fair experience.

August 2-9
As many of you have seen, Dave and Samara sent out an email outlining our plans for the 2020 Fair
Season this year. There is still much that is unknown however we do plan to host some sort of
opportunity for youth the showcase their projects this year. We are currently working with two plans,
the first, “Plan A” includes a modified in person show and a virtual auction for animal science members
and an in person interview for static members. The Dog show will be postponed until September. Our
second plan, “Plan B” will include a virtual show and auction for animal science members and a virtual
interview process for our static members.
Please refer to the email that was sent to all 4-H and FFA members and families in Mid May. We will be
sending more details as we have them and we appreciate your flexibility and support in trying
something new this year!
Record Book Check-Ins will still be held June 8, 10, 16 & 18. Check-ins will take place virtually. Please use
the link you were emailed to sign up for a date and time (on one of the 4 listed dates) that works best for
you. Things will look slightly different because the 4-H volunteer who is talking with you about your records
will not be able to flip through your book during the check in. However, we still expect that each of the
requirements listed below are met.
Reminder: You must attend at least one record book check in to participate in Crook County Fair.
Requirements for record book check-in:
Section 1 & 2 of 4-H Resume completed for previous year and started for current year
All other section of 4-H Resume must show progression in activities
Section 11 of 4-H Resume completed for previous year
Project records for the current year must be up to date
Advancements must show progression not necessary for record book check in 2020
Previous 4-H year Story and Project Records, including financial summary must be
completed and closed out for the year
If you have questions about record books prior to check-in be sure to attend a record book workshop listed
above, or contact Samara at the Extension Office [email protected] or 541-447-6228.
