A New National Historic Trail Proposal

Albert Eddins President of the Southern Trails Chapter of the Oregon-California Trails Association will present an

informative PowerPoint program about their proposal for a new National Historic Trail. An initiative of the

Southern Trails and Utah Crossroads Chapters seeks to obtain National Historic Trail status for the Southern Trail

to California.

The Southern Trail was the gateway to California for emigrants coming from the southern portion of the United

States and northern Mexico during the great American western expansion of the mid-nineteenth century. Trails

across the northern half of the United States used for the same purpose and during the same time period (Oregon,

California and Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trails) have received National Historic Trail designation while

the Southern Trail has been ignored. This proposal is designed to redress that disparity.

In addition to its use by emigrants the Southern Trail was also the trail of the Army of the West, instrumental in

bringing New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada and portions of Utah and Colorado into the Union.

Please join us with friends and family to enjoy this special presentation.

Lewis and Clark Expedition: Insights and Impact

Insights and Impact was the theme of a special Lewis and Clark Exhibit planned and implemented by chapter

charter members, Dr. Gerald and Susie Holcomb at the Mayo Clinic’s “Charter House” in Rochester, Minnesota.

Using artifacts and publications from their personal collection, the exhibit was intended to bring the story of the

“Corps of Discovery” to the nearly 400 residents of their Continuing Care Retirement Community.

Response to their exhibit was exciting. Film presentations about the Expedition by National Geographic, and talks

by Jim Vowels, Newsletter Editor of the Minnesota Chapter of the LCTHF were well attended.

The Holcomb’s had

previously donated their

extensive library of

Lewis and Clark

material, (including a

full set of 1st Edition

Journals), to Hastings

College in Nebraska.

However, as true

“Clarkies,” they missed

it so much that they

began collecting again!

Congratulations on your

wonderful project. Jerry & Susie Holcomb with Bulletin Board Exhibit

The Tucson Museum of Art Presents Three exhibitions that depict the people and landscapes from

one of the most important journeys in American history.

The Journey of Lewis and Clark

October 23, 2010 — January 23, 2011

Learn about one of the greatest journeys in history with artists Charles Fritz and Michael Haynes, and collector Tim Peterson

"An Artist with the Corps of Discovery – One Hundred Paintings Illustrating the Journals of

Lewis and Clark" contains the oils of Montana artist Charles Fritz. The one hundred oils he created chronicle the explorers’ journals from

their first sighting of the Great Falls of the Missouri to a buffalo hunt to the Pacific Ocean and back. Fritz’s own journey following the

journals of Lewis and Clark began through a collector of western art who was seeking an

artist to paint a scene based on Lewis’ description in 1805 of the Yellowstone River from

a bluff on the Missouri. As Fritz began to work on the commission he became more determined to complete the whole expedition as if he was

the artist with the Corps of Discovery. His paintings take the viewer from the beginning of

the journey to its triumphant end and all the hardships in between.

"To the Western Ocean: Portraits of the Lewis and Clark Expedition" contains fourteen

watercolor portraits from Michael Haynes that bring the people behind the Corps of Discovery to life.

Lewis, Clark, York, and

Sacagawea are portrayed in individual portraits while the other thirty members are

shown in group portraits; including hunters, soldiers,

blacksmiths, cooks, interpreters and musicians.

His “Uniform and Dress of the

Corps of Discovery” paintings were selected as guides for the uniforms in the National

Geographic’s Lewis and Clark IMAX production.

Lewis and Clark Art…..continued

Included in "Thomas Jefferson’s West: At the Confluence of Art and Exploration" are selections of paintings and drawings that illustrate Lewis and Clark’s Corp of Discovery

expedition. Tim Peterson selected the works himself, paying close attention to the content of each piece to tell the story of their adventures in narrative form.

This grouping includes

works by: William Ahrendt, James Ayers, Jim Carson,

Todd Connor, Curt Delano, John Demott, Frank Hagel, Mort Kunstler, Ken Laager,

Dan Meiduch, Clark Kelly Price, Don Spaulding, and

David Wright.

Each artist has established a distinguished career as

painters and illustrators in the romantic and historic

depiction of a fascinating era in American history

Greetings to Grand Canyon Chapter Members and Friends,

The 42nd Annual Meeting of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation was held in Lewiston, Montana

in early August. Six local members of our chapter and two out of state members attended so the Grand Canyon

Chapter was well represented. This was the first time an annual meeting has been hosted by a Native American

tribe and held on reservation land. The Nez Perce tribe played a critical role in the success of the Expedition in

1805. As we stood at Canoe Camp on the Clearwater River in August 2010, we could almost see the starving

Corps of Discovery coming out of the Bitterroot Mountains in Sept 1805. The hospitable Nez Perce gave the

explorers dried salmon and camas root to eat (which made them very sick!!) and showed them how to make canoes

using fire rather than tools.

At our winter meeting (January or February TBA) you will be treated to a power point presentation of the

activities we enjoyed at the Lewiston meeting. Chapter member Brooke Myers will share her pictures and

knowledge from Lewiston including her jet boat adventure on the Snake River.

Mark your calendars for November 13, 2010....at our first meeting we will hear from Mr. Albert Eddins,

President of the Southern Trails Chapter of the Oregon-California Trails Association. Mr. Eddins will bring us up

to date on historic trails across the Southwest and ongoing research to map and preserve the original trails. We will

also learn more about the National Historic Trail and about work to digitize original emigrant diaries.

Our Spring meeting will feature Past-President, Wayne McKinley, sharing his research on General James

Wilkinson who operated in the southern part of our country in the 1800's. Gen. Wilkinson is a very controversial

character so don't miss Wayne's take on this topic.

Please invite your friends to attend our meetings and perhaps to join us as we expand our horizons while

learning more about Western Expansion of the United States.

The Oregon-California Trails Association

Encompassing the Oregon Trail, the California Trail, the Santa Fe Trail,

the Applegate Trail and the Mormon Trail, the Oregon-California Trails

Association (OCTA) seeks to preserve the stories and the legacy of the

19th century American migration.

Their mission is to protect the Historic Emigrant Trails legacy by

promoting research, education, preservation activities and public

awareness of the trails, and to work with others to promote these causes.

Its members explore the history of the American frontier west from the

pioneers and Indians who led the way, to covered wagons, cattle and

cowboys who followed later

The Association has 11 regional or state chapters, many of which sponsor

their own websites. The chapters work on marking and mapping the trails

and work with private landowners as well as government agencies, such as

the Bureau of Land Management and the National Park Service, on

preservation issues.

It's a great way to get “on the ground” in OCTA because local chapters

sponsor trail outings in their area and have frequent meetings to discuss

trail history and preservation. Most of these events are open to members

and non-members alike.
