We’d like to again thank the MoHS PTSA and the Kina’ole Fundraising Committee for the success of the 16th Annual Moanalua Kina’ole Awards Dinner and Silent Auction on February 27, 2020. The event is meant to honor those who are part of Moanalua High and our history as well to raise funds for our school. It is a special night filled with community, current students, alumni, as well as current and former faculty. This year we honored alumna, Michelle Moore, Class Advisor for 1986, Susan Fushikoshi Fung and Salt Lake Principal, Duwayne Abe. In addition, a big mahalo to PTSA President Lei Fukumura, who also served as Kina’ole Committee Co-Chair alongside Steven Bailey, and all of the Kina’ole committee members and volunteers. I know there are many others to thank including our students who performed and entertained, as well as our MeneMAC Broadcast Media group who produced outstanding videos of our honorees. Special thanks to our business and community supporters for their generous donations and assistance! Every year is a different and amazing experience and this year was no exception. Our honorees are so deserving and always embody the spirit of Moanalua. Dear Parents, Students and Guardians,

We’d like to again thank the MoHS PTSA and the Kina’ole Fundraising Committee for the success

of the 16th Annual Moanalua Kina’ole Awards Dinner and Silent Auction on February 27, 2020.

The event is meant to honor those who are part of Moanalua High and our history as well to raise

funds for our school. It is a special night filled with community, current students, alumni, as well

as current and former faculty. This year we honored alumna, Michelle Moore, Class Advisor for

1986, Susan Fushikoshi Fung and Salt Lake Principal, Duwayne Abe. In addition, a big mahalo to

FOODLAND-SACK ‘N’ SAVE “SHOP FOR HIGHER EDUCATION”

Want to help Moanalua High School earn money for scholarships? Then all you need to do is shop at Foodland or Sack ‘n’ Save between February 19 and March 31, 2020. You may start designating your school NOW. Simply step up to the cashier, show your Maika’i Card, and give him/her our school code: 7574. If you are not a Maika’i member, it is simple and free to sign up. The more points we earn, the more scholarship money the school will receive. The program is open to high schools only, but if you are also a parent of an elementary or middle schooler, please ask parents there to support us! Eventually, most of the students in the Moanalua complex will attend MoHS. Help us earn more scholarships!

1. The inaugural “Art on the Hill” event will celebrate Fine Arts, Performing Arts and the Career and Technical Education students on Friday, March 6 from 5-7 p.m. Modeled after the "First Friday" art gallery gatherings in Honolulu, Art on the Hill is an opportunity to see student projects, watch live demonstrations and talk to the artists. The galleries will be centered around the Student Center Building courtyard and F-building. Visitors will be treated to live art and dance demonstrations and performances and be able to participate in an interactive art exhibit. In addition, the media students will have a photo booth, the graphics students will be selling items, and the culinary students will be selling a pasta entree. The event is free and open to the general public.

2. The Senior Writing Portfolio is an important fourth quarter assessment for students. It is not required for graduation, but it is a wonderful opportunity for seniors to collect their best works of the year and showcase their skills. Each senior English teacher has his or her own list of requirements for this project, but all portfolios are due Friday, May 1, 2020--no late.

Senior Class of 2020 Important Announcements (Class Advisor – Mrs. Nakagawa-Saito)

Spring Food Drive: Much thanks and appreciation to all of you who were able to donate non-perishable foods or made a monetary donation! It is nice to be able to say that the Moanalua HS class of 2020 did what they could to assist those in need.

Financial Obligations: Please clear up any financial obligations (e.g. senior agreements, school dues, class fees, lost books, meal tracker account, etc) sooner rather than later. Failure to clear up any obligations will affect student participation in the graduation practices and ceremony.

Senior Prom Reminders: Our prom will be held at the Pomaikai Ballrooms on April 18th, 2020. Table sign- ups are happening through March 06 via Mrs. Koyanagi’s (P-14) or Mrs. Nakagawa-Saito’s (Q-202lab) rooms. Forms can be picked up or printed off your school gmail account. If you need a refund or need to change your date’s name, please remember that March 30th is the absolute last day to do so. There is a $5 change fee for name changes. Refer any questions to Mrs. Naks-Saito.

Graduation Cap & Gown: For those of you who ordered your graduation Cap & Gown by December 01, pick up will be on March 03rd after school in the cafeteria. Please remember to bring your ID. For those of you who ordered between December 01 and March 01, your orders will come in after Spring Break. Lastly, if you ordered after March 01, your orders will be coming in by early May. If you haven’t done so yet, please order your cap and gown today! The cost for the basic package (cap, gown, and diploma cover) is now $53.40 + the $40 late fee. Absolute last day to order is April 11th.

SAVE THE DATES: Gown adjustments will be on March 25th in room Q-202lab during lunch.

Graduation Day Accessories: As graduation approaches, please remember that the gentleman will need a black or navy blue tie, black dress pants and shoes, and a white long sleeve collared shirt. As for the ladies, you need a white dress with a scoop or v-neck (You can substitute a white blouse and culottes but you will need to bring them in to show Mrs. Naks-Saito before graduation) and white DRESS shoes. .

Parent Volunteers: PGU/ PG2020 will be having planning meetings throughout the school year. If you are interested in assisting with anything Project Grad related you are welcomed to attend these meetings. Need more info? Please email them at [email protected].

FINAL DEADLINE FOR PROJECT GRADUATION 2020 REGISTRATION APRIL 15TH: Final deadline for

applications for the fun all-night drug/alcohol-free post-graduation party for 2020 graduates is April 15th as transportation, venue and food, various activities, t-shirts and goody bags will be ordered shortly after this date. Be sure to turn in your $300 payment and completed application to the PGU Red Box in the school office before the deadline as no late applications will be accepted. PGU ROOSEVELT H.S. MUSIC FESTIVAL AND U.H. CONCESSION STAND FUNDRAISING: Join the

fun group of volunteers at our upcoming fundraising at Music Festival at Roosevelt High School on March 7 or at the U.H. Concession Stands on March 15. MARCH 14 HI5 COLLECTION and $5 BAKE SALE: from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the high school student parking

lot. Bring your rinsed out and uncapped bottles and cans marked HI5 to raise funds for various year groups. Come on by and check out the yummy home-baked goodies from our various Moanalua families. Please visit the PGU website to sign up to help, to donate baked goods, and for more information.

PEARLRIDGE CALIFORNIA PIZZA KITCHEN FUNDRAISER, MARCH 5 AND APRIL 16: Pick up lunch,

dinner or just a snack or dessert at the Pearlridge California Pizza Kitchen on Wednesday, March 5 and Thursday, April 16 to help support PGU! 20% of the sale of any purchase accompanied with a flyer will help replenish our PG funds for future years. Find your flyer at the PGU website.

NEXT PROJECT GRADUATION UNITED/PG2020 MEETING: Come and meet other parent volunteers and

find out how different year groups are progressing on their Project Graduation events. Our next meeting is on Wednesday, March 25 at 6:00 p.m. at Moanalua 99 Food Court (look for the Project Graduation sign).

SIGN UP GENIUS FOR CLASS OF 2021, 2022, AND 2023 HELP FOR PG 2020 EVENT: Parents, want

to have a Project Graduation event for your child’s year? If so, come and help at the PG2020 event to see how it is run. Sign up for graduation night or the day after graduation so when the time comes for your child’s year, you and the other parents in your year group will know what to do. Remember, as this is a parent volunteer-run event, it is all up to the parents to get things done! ATHLETIC CLEARANCE INSTRUCTIONS Pick up an athletic clearance packet: Athletic Packets are available in the main office, Registrar’s Office, College & Career Center, training room and gym. Form 14 is not accepted for athletic participation. Contents of the packets include: • Athletic Participation Procedures • Hawaii DOE Parent-Athlete Handbook • Dept of Ed Physical Examination for Athletes Form • Student Participation and Parent/Guardian Consent, Release & Assumption

of RISK Form • Booster Club Membership Form (optional) • Concussion Management Form • Publication Form

ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION PROCEDURE All student-athletes must have athletic clearance prior to participation. Six things must be submitted for processing in order to be cleared for participation:

1. Dept. of Ed Physical Examination for Athletes Form 2. Student Participation and Parent/Guardian Consent, Release &

Assumption of RISK Form 3. Processing Fee ($10.00) 4. Student Publication/Audio/Video Release Form 5. Concussion Management Form 6. Concussion Baseline test must be completed prior.

Please check the website for testing dates and times. Completed forms (Parent Consent and Liability Form, Processing fee of $10.00, and DOE Physical Form) must be turned in to the Athletic Directors box in the main office or Athletic Training Room. A pink clearance slip will be available for pick up in the athletic training room when the forms have been processed. It will be the responsibility of the athletes to visit the training room and check for his/her completed clearance slip. This pink slip is the athletic clearance to participate. Pink slips must be given to the head coach(es) prior to participation. Student athletes who are already athletically cleared and wish to try out or participate in another sport during the school year must obtain another copy of their pink slip (athletic clearance) from the Athletic Training Room.

Got Crutches? Moanalua Athletic Training Department is accepting donations of crutches and immobilization boots. Drop them off in the main and athletic offices or to the athletic training room (S Building) throughout the year.

STUDENT ACTIVITY PASSES Students at Moanalua High School can purchase an athletic pass. This pass allows entry to regular season OIA/OIA football games, boys and girls basketball and volleyball games, wrestling and judo matches throughout the year. The cost of the activity book is $25.00 and the savings are incredible! You save over $250.00 off sport admission fees when you purchase an activity pass. Activity passes may be purchased from the Account Clerk in the Registrar’s Office.

Know your privacy rights as they apply to 1) student record information; 2) directory information; 3) surveys and other information

collection; and 4) military recruitment information. For more information on your privacy rights, the laws that protect them, and how to

• Students should have ID cards at all times and must use them to purchase meals.

• To assure prompt attention in case of an emergency, notify the school of any changes in telephone numbers and/or addresses throughout the school year.

• Parents are to notify the Attendance Director in cases of lgitimate absences by a telephone call during the absence or by a written note within two days upon the student’s return to school. The Attendance Office opens at 7:45 a.m. daily. The telephone number is 305-1006.

• Parents will be notified through the automated calling system for any unexcused absences from 1 or more periods.

• Off-Campus passes will be issued through the Attendance Office. Please allow 24 hr. courtesy notice to release your child. Emergency notification allowed with

1 hour notice, however please be aware that we may not be able to accommodate your request immediately.

Student Bus Transportation/Free & Reduced Meals:

Please be aware that the DOE policy requirement for students to present a valid bus pass to the bus driver in order to board the bus will be strictly enforced. Some families

may be eligible for bus subsidies depending on their income. Please refer to the “Letter to Households – National School Lunch Program/School Breakfast Program”

School Alerts via Text Messages

The school may, periodically, send notifications via text messaging. These may include general school announcements and/or emergency announcements. In order to receive

text messages from the school, text the word Join to the number 67587. You will receive a confirmation message thanking you for joining school alerts. Create a contact on your phone with the school’s name, or another meaningful name, and the phone number 56360. Then, when you receive a text from this number, you know who is sending it.
