Dear Parents,
Our Cape Elementary family is off to a busy start this year. Each day we are surrounded by smiling students, caring parents and giving volunteers. Thank you to everyone for their dedication and commitment in making Cape the best elementary school! Take a look at our October calendar in this newsletter, in your child’s planner or on our website for the many activities happening this month. Thanks to all of our volunteers and Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) who are currently giving their time at Cape! Our students love seeing moms, dads, and grandparents in our classrooms, café and library! If you are interested in volunteering, please call or email our volunteer coordinator, Mindy Durnell or our assistant principal, Kristi Sund. Please mark your calendar now for Cape’s first Trunk or Treat on Friday, October 28 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This will be a wonderful evening for our Cape families to celebrate Fall together. Please look in this newsletter for more information and be on the lookout for a flyer in the next couple of weeks. We will need families to decorate their trunks and also families to donate bags of candy. We are honored and privileged to be part of the Cape family. Every school year brings new opportunities and new challenges, and every year, our parents’ continued support and partnership with us in their child’s education becomes increasingly important as we work together to ensure success during the school year. The most important but simple contributions a parent can make include ensuring children come to school every day, arriving on time ready to learn; communicating openly with the classroom teacher; reading, listening, and talking with your child about what interests him or her. Thank you for your support, for your understanding, and for giving us your children to teach. They are simply the best, and they are the reason we love what we do!
Sincerely, Nicole Osterholm and Kristi Sund
A MESSAGE FROM YOUR ADMINISTRATORS
Mission: To provide a safe and supportive learning community where every student experiences success. Vision: We believe that the most promising strategy for achieving the mission of Cape Elementary

Cape Elementary is holding a fundraiser to obtain funds
to purchase a PE Shade structure. Our students are
outdoors during PE time with no significant shade.
With the structure, our students would be protected
from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. All staff
and students could enjoy outdoor activities under this
shade without exposure to the sun and weather.
Please consider a donation to Cape Elementary PE/
Shade fund. Donors contributing $100 or more will
have their names posted on a banner which will be
placed at the site of the PE structure.
We are confident that with the support of our families
and the community, we can meet our goal. The
estimated cost of the structure is $90,000.00.
Thank you for supporting Cape Elementary.

(a) Only latex-free disposable gloves are permitted in schools and District buildings. (b) Only Mylar helium balloons are allowed on school campuses, at school functions, and on school transportation. (c) All classroom supplies should be non-latex, if available.

October is National Bullying Prevention month. Each
day, over 160,000 students across the nation stay home
from school due to fear of being bullied. Bullying
directly affects a student’s ability to learn. Students
who are bullied find it difficult to concentrate, show a
decline in grades, and lose self-esteem, self-
confidence, and self-worth. They also may experience
physical symptoms – stomachaches, headaches and
mental health issues are among the most
prevalent. Even more tragically, bullying often leads to
suicide or suicide attempts. For young students who
engage in bullying behaviors, bullying usually continues
as they become older. Unless someone intervenes, in
some cases, bullying grows into violence and other
serious problems. Children who consistently bully
others often continue their aggressive behavior
through adolescence and into adulthood.
This year’s theme at Cape Elementary for National
Bullying Prevention month is “Be Someone’s HERO –
Stand up to Bullying.” Our month-long activities will kick
off on Tuesday, October 4. We are encouraging all
students and faculty/staff to wear blue on Tuesday to
Stomp Out Bullying. Stand united and wear orange
(bracelets, tee shirts, shoes, socks, etc.) on
Wednesday, October 19 for “Unity Day,” as we Have
respect for others, Encourage everyone to be polite,
Report bullying to an adult, Offer help to those who are
bullied. Students will be given opportunities throughout
the month to be “HERO”s, take part in activities and
view Public Service Announcements which will be shown
throughout the month on the morning news.
Anti-Bullying Policy:
The Jeffery Johnston Stand Up for All Students Act
became a law in June 2008. The School Board of Lee
County has approved a Board Policy which states their
guidelines for the identification and reporting of
bullying, expectations for behavior, procedures and
consequences regarding bullying and harassment.
In short, the School District of Lee County will not
tolerate any form of bullying or harassment between
students and/or adults on our school campuses. Our
goal is protection of our students, and provision of a
safe and nurturing educational environment for all of
our students and staff.
If you have questions pertaining to Cape Elementary
School’s procedures for handling suspected bullying or
harassment, please feel free to contact Miss Boeck,
School Counselor.

Cape PTO and Administration would like to apologize for our Pizza Hut Night. Came families are awesome and came out to support our school; however, Pizza Hut was not prepared with enough staff or food for our attendance. Pizza Hut is donating pizzas to Cape and will also make another donation to our school.
Cape Elementary families are invited to this fun
and FREE event on Friday, October 28th from 6:00 p.m.
to 8:00 p.m. where you can bring your kids in their
best costumes to enjoy an evening of decorated
trunks and treats! Children walk by car trunks
decorated with themes and games and receive
treats. Enjoy family fun in a safe, non-scary
environment with some of the most creative trunks
around... Adding to the fun, hotdogs, pizza, soda,
popcorn and snow cones are available for purchase.
Thousands of pieces of candy are needed for this free
event, and we need your donations to make it
happen! Bring in individually-wrapped bags of candy
to the office before October 28.
We need volunteers to host trunks, serve food and
help out on the day of the event. Email Nicole
Osterholm at [email protected] to sign up.
Service hours are available for students who
volunteer.
Art Room News: Cape’s Art Museum This school year is flying by in my classroom! Your little artists have created many beautiful pieces, and as they continue, I will be putting them up for display in our digital art museum on artsonia.com. We have a lot to be proud of (and to brag about) this year on artsonia.
I want to thank those of you who actively participate in viewing your student's artworks, being a fan club member, making comments on artworks, as well as dollars spent in the gift shop. When you write comments to your children and other students, it means so much to them!
iphone app- There is now a free iphone app for artsonia. You can find it in the app store.
Please email me with any questions or concerns. Enjoy!
