A Message From The Principal...Dear Parents,

The 2009 – 2010 school year is in full swing, and we have had a great start this school year. Teaching and learning activities are the central focus for our students, faculty, and staff with our co-curricular programs in full swing also. All of this adds to the “spirit” of Wheaton North High School. Fall is an exciting time of the year. It is time for Homecoming; a reminder of all the great Falcon traditions. From the Desk of Lorie CamposAssistant Principal of Curriculum & Activities

I hope you and your student have had a great start to the 2009/10 school year. If you were able to attend Curriculum Night, thank you for taking the time to attend and for completing the surveys; your input is important to us.

It is hard to believe we have already hit the 6-week mark. Your students should be bringing home their 6-week grades on Friday, October 9, 2009. Many of the activities are under way but it is not too late for your student to get involved. There are over 25 clubs and activities to choose from. Have your student check the calendar on the Activities office window (across from the cafeteria) for information on meeting times and dates.

As you will see throughout this newsletter, there are many great events in the upcoming months. We look forward to seeing you! If there is anything I can do to help you, please feel free to contact me.

CHORAL NOTESWelcome back music students and families! I am truly excited for this school year after spending the first week with all my chorus classes. Chamber Choir has already started working on their IMEA music while all other groups are busy learning music for our fall concert. The students have started off the year with a positive attitude and an eagerness to learn. GREAT JOB, everyone!

All students were given a Choral Handbook with concert dates, important information for the year and an information sheet which should have been signed and turned back in during the first week of school. Please e-mail me if you have any questions, or have not seen this handbook. Our first concert for the year is November 5 at 7PM in the Taylor Auditorium. I am looking forward to seeing you there.

This year, I will also be teaching 7th & 8th grade chorus at Monroe during 8th period (middle school time). My school day starts at North 2nd period, and ends at Monroe at 3PM. Because of this schedule, the best way to reach me is via e-mail at [email protected]

Please do not hesitate to drop me a note anytime regarding questions, ideas, comments, etc. I am here to teach your children and assist whenever I can. Have a great year!

Underclass Yearbook Pictures—Last Chance! If you missed your picture day when the photographer was here September 21-25 or you received the picture package (arriving in homes toward the end of October) you ordered and want a retake, you have one last chance. The photographer will be here from 7:00-2:30 on November 5. No appointment is necessary: just come to Schomas Theater when you have a free 5 minutes (before or after school, study hall, etc.). If you’re getting a retake, bring your picture package to turn in and to show the photographer what you don’t like. If you haven’t had your picture taken by November 5, you will not be pictured in the yearbook.

Orchestra Notes Greetings to all Wheaton North Orchestra students, families, fans, and supporters! It is truly my great pleasure to introduce myself as the new Wheaton North High School orchestra director, and to highlight some important events that are coming this fall. My name is Philip Rudd, and I am absolutely thrilled to become a part of the wonderful tradition of performing arts excellence here at Wheaton North. I am a Wheaton native, and I most recently completed my Masters degree in orchestral conducting at Illinois State University. Before my time at ISU, I taught public-school orchestra in Western Springs, Illinois, and attended Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. I also teach private lessons, play chamber music, and conduct the Central Illinois Concert Orchestra, which is a youth symphony near Peoria.

As we begin our musical journeys together, I have very high hopes and expectations for your orchestras. We will strive to create music in a highly professional environment, and we will work together to create a community that challenges, supports, and engages each ensemble member.

I would also like to take this chance to promote our first orchestra concert of the year, which will take place on October 29. This promises to be an extremely exciting beginning of our performance season! Our repertoire will be anchored by Tchaikovsky’s masterful Serenade for Strings, opus 48, which is a work of sublime beauty and lush Russian Romanticism. In addition, we will highlight Peter Warlock’s classic for string orchestra, Capriol Suite, which gives archaic dance forms and styles a decidedly 20th Century twist. We hope that everyone will come out to enjoy the newest edition of the Wheaton North orchestra program!

Once again, I feel extremely blessed to be a part of the rich tradition of orchestra in Wheaton, and I am so excited to see what glorious music this year will bring! Please feel free to contact me at any time with any questions, comments, or concerns you may have about the Wheaton North orchestras.

Musically Yours, Philip Rudd

Speech Team To Host 20th Annual Technicolor TournamentThe Wheaton North Speech team will play host to 35 teams on November 14 at its annual Technicolor Tournament. This year marks the 20th consecutive year the team has hosted this contest. All Varsity members of the team will compete for the home school and the tournament is an early season indicator of who will be the successful teams and individual competitors for the year. In most events, the final rounds will include several students who will make it to the Final Rounds at the IHSA State contest the following February. The Technicolor Tournament is open to the public and will begin at 8:00am and Final rounds are scheduled for 3:00pm. Speech Team parents will have the opportunity to help at the contest by selling concessions or serving as a hall monitor.

Welcome Back to a New School Year & a New POST PROM

Post Prom is a fantastic opportunity for parents (especially freshman and sophomore parents) to meet other North parents. Last year I jumped in to chair/coordinate this event as a freshman parent and had the honor of meeting 400+ parents throughout District 200 and half of them from North! This event provides a safe place for juniors and seniors to go after Prom. It takes 200-300 parents at each school in order to pull this event off - that’s 200+ volunteers from North alone.

Currently there are specific COMMITTEE CHAIR positions open that really help this event get off the ground. I am looking for:fUnDraIser chaIrperson(s) (this event is funded by donations and contributions from the Boosters, PTA’s, community businesses, the Park District and YOU); prIZes chaIrperson(s); fooDs chaIrperson –co-chair; DecoratIons chaIrperson – co-chair; secUrItY chaIrperson; and JaIl transfer chaIrperson.

I’ll finish by offering a quick thanks to those of you returning and to my new co-chair here at North – Darcie Bonga. My appreciations to all of you start now! I would encourage anyone interested to ask questions, get involved! You can contact me through the Falcon Booster Website at www.wnhsboosters.org, click on the POST PROM LINK or you can call me- CHRIS ROBERTSON at 630.653.0996

Attendance

From the Desk of Jim VenckusAssistant Principal for Student Services

Welcome back! We hope everyone is off to a good start to the school year. We have informed the students about the following new rules but ask that you please reiterate them to your student(s). Thank you and please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great year!

Please call the Attendance Office at (630) 784-7334 by 6pm the day of your student’s absence. If a call is not received by then, the absence will be considered unexcused. Also, please remind your student to pick up his or her pass in the Attendance Office before leaving for an appointment.

Cyber BullyingThe District 200 Board of Education has adopted as a policy on cyber bullying, which refers to any type of bullying, harassment, hazing, intimidation, or threats that occur via technology. Students have been warned that they can be disciplined even if these actions occur off school grounds due to the serious disruption they can cause to a student’s education.

We appreciate your attention to these items. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions or concerns. Have a great school year!

TheftAs does any large institution we have thefts, and most are preventable. We strongly recommend students not bring valuable items and large amounts of money to school. We are not responsible for these items getting stolen or lost. Please remind your student to keep his or her valuables or money with him or her or in a locked locker at all times. Thefts should be reported to the Deans’ Office and the teacher, coach, or sponsor who is in charge.

Drop-Off LocationsPlease avoid dropping students off behind the building off Papworth. Our drop-off points are at the main entrance, the sidewalk on Papworth, the athletic/field house entrance (Door 7), or the art/music entrance (Door 16) off Morse Road.

After SchoolThe building closes at 2:30. Students who remain after school must be directly supervised by a teacher, coach, or sponsor. Students who are waiting for rides must wait outside the building. The library is open until 3:30; however, students are required to get a pass from one of their teachers in order to use it.

Cell Phones & Electronic Music DevicesPlease remind your student that cell phones and electronic music devices (IPOD’s, MP3 players, etc.) are to be powered off (not set on silent or vibrate) and out of sight during the school hours of 7:20-2:15. On the first violation, the student will be issued a detention. The device will be confiscated and returned to the student after school. Further violations will result in Saturday schools and the device returned only to a parent.

New Tardy InitiativeWe are implementing a new tardy initiative for this school year. Our purpose is twofold: 1) to curb tardiness which will also eliminate passing period and class start-up issues, and 2) to instill good habits for future school and work experiences. Students are tardy when they are not in their classroom when the bell rings. Tardy students will report to a designated location where a staff member will scan their school ID. Within seconds, they will be issued unexcused passes to class and warnings or consequences based on their total number of tardies for the semester. Consequences will begin with after-school detentions and escalate to Saturday schools and suspensions. Students will be able to accumulate multiple tardies in one day. A similar procedure will apply to students who are late to school. We would appreciate you talking with your student about the importance of being punctual to school and their classes.

News from the Guidance Department

Freshman ConferencesThe Class of 2013 is off to a great start. The New Student/Freshman BBQ in August helped students become acquainted with WNHS. Now that school is in full swing you can see the apprehension and anxiety in 9th graders slowly fade away as they become more accustomed to life at WNHS.

During the week of October 26th all 9th graders will meet with their counselor in a small-group format. The purpose of these meetings is three fold. It gives students and counselors the opportunity to get to know each other better. Counselors will review WNHS’ graduation requirements and assist students in creating a four-year plan of study (of course, this is a tentative plan). Finally, students will share (privately) their goals and ambitions for high school, as well as for life after WNHS.

Junior Parent NightJunior Parent Night is scheduled for Tuesday, November 17th from 7:00-9:00 P.M. All junior parents are encouraged to attend. The presentation will take place in Taylor Auditorium and then break out into smaller sessions. Breakout session topics will include:-The College Search and Application Process-State Universities -Selective Colleges and Universities-The College of DuPage-On-line Tools for the College Search

College Representatives at Wheaton NorthWe are pleased to report that college representatives continue to visit Wheaton North during the first semester, to meet with our students, teachers, counselors, and parents. College representative meetings are open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors and are held in the College and Career Center. To attend a visit, students must request a pass at least 24 hours in advance of the scheduled visit from the Guidance secretary and then present the pass to their teacher for final approval.

College Representative Visit ListStudents and parents should periodically check the Guidance page at wnhs.org or Prephq.com for the most updated college rep visit list. Students should also check the bulletin board in the College Career Center or the digital board in the commons for the most updated schedule.

Technology Center of DuPage Explore DayAny student interested in attending TCD during their junior or senior year should sign up to attend the Explore Day Field Trip at TCD scheduled for Wednesday, nov 4, 2009. All students will need to have a signed permission slip, which will be mailed by TCD to all sophomore and junior WNHS students. If you do not receive one, please come to the Counseling Office. The field trip will be held during the morning and students will be bussed to and from the TCD location in Addison. A complete tour of the facilities and explanation of a variety of programming options will be discussed. The field trip is for sopho-more and junior students, ONLY. If you have any questions, please contact Carol McCallum at 630/784-7311.

Club E.R.Are you interested in helping to improve our environment towards cleaner air, water, and land? Club Environmental Rescue (E.R.) does just that! Club E.R. helps to preserve the Earth one meeting at a time. Where else can you spend your time saving the world?!? Students recycle, plant new trees and plants, do environmental clean-ups, take fun fields trips, promote environmental issues to others, and do fund raisers to support the environment. If you want to have fun and feel good about improving the environment for Mother Earth, people, and animals, Club E.R. is for you! Students can contact Ms. Gath-man at [email protected] or Mrs. Paulsen at [email protected] or visit our web site at www.wnhs.org and click on Activities to see the Club Environmental Rescue website. This is a FREE club. There is NO activity fee and this is a great club to make new friends who also care to rescue and preserve our planet!

COLLEGE APPLICATION DEADLINESJust a reminder, college admission deadlines will be approaching fast. In senior individual conferences that were held in September, counselors stressed the importance of meeting these deadlines. Also, many colleges require counselor and teacher recommendations, so students should begin requesting these letters now. When requesting these letters from teachers, students should provide a completed teacher recommendation form to the teacher. This form is located in the College Career Center and the information from it will help teacher’s write a thorough and high quality recommendation

Finally, we request students turn in their application and transcript request form two weeks prior to the application deadline. This allows counselors to proofread the application packets, complete any attached materials, and read any student essays before mailing them to the prospective colleges. The following are WNHS college application deadlines.

application Deadline: nov. 1 nov. 15 Dec. 1 Jan. 1 Jan. 15

must be in guidance by: oct. 15 oct. 25 nov. 8 Dec. 7 Dec. 14

application materials for the University of Illinois must be postmarked no later than november 1st to meet their priority deadline. priority deadline for Illinois state and northern Illinois is november 15th, so apply early!!!

A Frequently Asked Question:“How Can I Find a Scholarship?”

Although there are some exceptions, most scholarships are only open to seniors; however, it’s never too early to start looking! As the Guidance Department hears about scholarship opportunities, we will list them in the Scholarship Bulletin, which will be available beginning in October in the College and Career Center or on the Guidance webpage (Go to www.wnhs.org, click on “Guidance” then “Monthly Scholarship Bulletin”). Students should check the Scholarship Bulletin monthly, because the number of scholarships increase as the year progresses. Another recommended source of scholarship information is www.fastweb.com, where you can register and receive a personalized list of scholarships for which you may apply. Finally, the majority of financial aid and scholarships comes directly through the college, so they are often the best source of information for students and families.

FINANCIAL AID NIGHTWheaton north will be hosting this year’s District 200 financial aid night on Wednesday, november 4, at 7:00 p.m. in taylor auditorium. Scott Seibring, Director of Financial Aid at Illinois Wesleyan University, will be the guest speaker who will cover a range of financial aid topics.

Financial planning and information gathering for college can never start too early, so parents of students in ninth through twelfth grade are encouraged to attend. We hope to see you there!

9Oct/Nov 2009

I hope all of you are having a great school year and are encouraging your children to be active and enjoy their high school experience. There is one item of interest that you should take note of in the coming months that is discussed below. We appreciate your continued support and look forward to seeing you on October 13th and 14th.

• Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled for Tuesday, October 13th and Wednesday, October 14th from 3:00 until 9:00 p.m. Students and parents will participate in a self-scheduling process that will be conducted from October 5th through October 9th. You should be cautioned that it is very difficult for each teacher to meet with all students’ parents within a two day period. The average teacher carries a load of approximately 125 students; conferences are scheduled for fifteen minutes and teachers are available for a total of five hours of conferences. We apologize for this situation; however, if you cannot schedule an appointment during the scheduled Parent/Teacher Conference time, you may contact teachers directly and schedule a conference time outside of the 13th and 14th that works for both parties. Within the newsletter is an appointment request sheet. You should complete the top section of the sheet (including the names of the teacher with whom you would like to schedule a conference) and have your son/daughter see those teachers between October 5th through October 9th to schedule the standard 15-minute conference. The teacher(s) will schedule an appointment and complete the appointment request sheet with the appropriate information. Your son/daughter should then bring home the completed appointment request sheet. Please save this sheet as it serves as confirmation of your appointments. Since conferences are scheduled over a period of two days, you may have to attend conferences on both days in order to meet with the requested teachers. If you should find it necessary to cancel any or all of your scheduled conference times, you may do so by calling 784-7300 and leaving a message on an individual teacher’s voicemail, or go to www.wnhs.org and email the teacher(s) directly.

DRIVER EDUCATION UPDATE:Distracted Driving Legislation Signed Into Law

VOICE OF DEMOCRACY

CONTESTEvery year the Wheaton VFW Post sponsors the Voice of Democracy contest. It begins on the local level and continues all the way to the national level in Washington D. C. Students can win prizes and scholarship money at the local, district, state, and national levels. It is a great opportunity. Students write an essay based on a theme and then record their essay on a tape or CD. This same essay continues to all levels of competition. This year’s theme is: “Does America Still Have Heroes?”

If any student at Wheaton North is interested in participating please see Mrs. Donna Wielgolewski in Room 906. All information and applications will be made available through Mrs. Wielgolewski. The deadline for submitting essays is October 30th, 2009.

Civil War Study Tour Aug. 2-6, 2010

Mr. Ward and Mr. Pribaz are offering a Civil war study tour for WNHS students, family and friends . The trip will be August 2nd- August 6th 2010. We will be visiting the Civil War battlefields of Antietam, Maryland, Gettysburg Pennsylvania and an historical tour of Washington, D.C. and Alexandria Virginia. If you have any questions please e-mail Bob Ward at [email protected]

Two new laws go into affect as of January 1, 2010 regarding distracted driving. Text messaging while driving and talking on a cell phone in a school or construction zone will now be moving violations that will go on the motorist’s driving record. The ticket will also be accompanied by fines and court costs determined by the judge.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that at least 25% of police-reported crashes involve some form of driver inattention.

Distraction occurs when a driver is delayed in the recognition of information needed to safely accomplish the driving task because something within or outside the vehicle draws his/her attention away from driving. Stay safe on the road and remember to drive defensively!

Attention Second Semester Driver Ed Students/Parents Driver Education Parent Night will be on Thursday, January 21st 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the Taylor Auditorium. Mandatory attendance is required for second semester driver education students and at least one parent/guardian.

The Wheaton North Nurses will be screening vision and hearing this fall for all special education students and students new to Wheaton North without record of previous screening or eye exam. If you are concerned about your student’s vision or hearing and they are not scheduled to be screened, please call or email us ([email protected]).

The state of Illinois offers the All Kids healthcare program for students with insufficient healthcare insurance. If you would like more information please look on the ALL Kids website (www.allkids.com) or call the DuPage County Health Department at (630) 682-7979.

School attendance is vitally important to your student’s academic success and maintaining good health is always the goal but when these measures don’t work...

Is your child too sick to go to school– or not? With the cold weather and flu season approaching, parents will be called upon to make this decision more frequently.

Viral illnesses (such as colds and flu*) love to spread from the infected person to others early in the illness through sneezing, coughing, and nasal drainage. If your child seems to be brewing an

illness that is more than the usual cold, the extra rest your child will receive by being kept home at this time would be most beneficial.

As you make your decision on whether or not your child is too sick to attend school, please use the simple guidelines listed above to help protect the health of your child and help control the spread of contagious illnesses in our classrooms.

*The seasonal flu shot is especially recommended for children 6-23 months, children/adults with chronic health conditions (including asthma), pregnant women, household contacts and caregivers

of children less than 6 months of age this year. This is a separate immunization from the H1N1 immunization which is not currently available.

Information about the availability of the Novel H1N1 will be provided as soon as we are notified by the DuPage County Health Department.

Lastly, please help us control the spread of illness by reminding your child to use tissues as needed and to wash their hands frequently. Thank you for your help in this matter!

From the Nurses

From the Boosters First I want to thank everyone who has become a member of the Wheaton North Booster Club – without your support we wouldn’t be able to help our students with all the sports and activities that are offered. Our first Booster Meeting of the year had a great turnout, we had a lot of new faces, it was great to meet everyone and I hope to see more parents at our future meetings. A big thank you to all the volunteers who helped out at our first home game against Addison Trail, it was pulled together in a matter of days and like always our Wheaton North parents helped make it happen. A special thanks to Kathy Paradise, Susan Schanowski and Dave Straus for helping with getting volunteers and running the concession stand and the dads who helped out with parking, great job! Remember we are going to start having guest speakers at our Booster meetings, so please check out our web site at www.wnhsbooster.org to find out what is new. Hope to see you at our upcoming meetings. Thanks -Dee Horky
