Special recognition is due to Lee Ann Underwood. Lee Ann has many talents, including throwing and finishing pottery. She created beautiful mugs that were awarded to conference speakers in thanks for their presentations. Other members volunteered to develop and coordinate the programs and educational events offered this year: Ashleigh Kayne, Mary Ann Heaney, Cynthia Ellwood, Eric Esswein, Christina Aguilera, Barb O'Kane, Jim Lieberman, Mike Richen, Nancy Kahl. Casey McCutcheon served the Legislative committee, Tina Fehringer served the Membership committee and Cynthia Ellwood, Linn Havelick, and Michael Richen served the International Committee. Each year new board members are elected to serve. Thanks to our outgoing board members: Cynthia Ellwood, Josh Schaeffer, Corey Butler, and Denise Donnelly. Welcome new board members: Bradley King, Sarah Kaiman, Bevin Luna and Breanne Beck. Also, Trish McCready finds it necessary to resign her position early. Alyce Bizell has been appointed by the board to fill the remainder of Trish’s term in accordance with RMS bylaws. The Rocky Mountain Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association has been in very good hands this year. Lastly, 50 RMS members and guests enjoyed the Holiday Party this year. It was a great opportunity to network and celebrate 2014. We collected a record 167 pounds of non-perishable food to donate to area food banks. Thanks to Linda Hendrix for planning a great party! Thanks to all our volunteers and looking forward to another great year in 2015, Milenda Powers

PILOT PROJECT PROGRAM FUNDING AVAILABLE RESEARCH & FUNDING

Each year, the Mountain and Plains Education and Research Center (MAPERC) distributes grants to support

innovative projects that promote occupational and environmental safety and health (OESH). The MAPERC fund

pilot research projects, which enhance the scientific knowledge about OESH topics ranging from air sampling

techniques to agricultural injuries. They also fund pilot research to practice (r2p) projects that apply scientific

knowledge to real world problems.

AREAS OF EMPHASIS

While the MAPERC welcomes proposals on any topic that can promote worker health, safety and productivity in

their region, they encourage proposals related to the following emphasis areas:

• Native American communities of the mountain & plains region

• Hispanic and Latino communities in the mountain & plains region

• The occupational and environmental health and safety implications of energy production, generation,

distribution and use

• Small businesses

• Surveillance of diseases and injuries related to OESH exposures

• Projects that evaluate the cost-effectiveness of OESH interventions

QUESTIONS ABOUT "RESEARCH" VERSUS "R2P"? JUST ASK.

"Research" and "research to practice" are not always distinct from one another. If you are applying to the grant

program and you think your project might fit into both categories, please contact the MAPERC at

[email protected]. You can also learn more about NIOSH's Research to Practice Initiative at

http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/r2p/.
