GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; ask therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest. Luke 10.2 Gathering Hymn: 647 Comfort Comfort The Lord be with you. And also with you

The Prayer of preparation (page 119)

Almighty God….

The Shema (page 120 of the prayer book)

Hear, O Israel….

God forgives and heals us. We need your healing, merciful God: give us true repentance. Some sins are plain to us; some escape us, some we cannot face.

Forgive us; set us free to hear your word to us; set us free to serve you.

God forgives you. Forgive others; forgive yourself.

Through Christ, God has put away your sin: approach your God in peace.

The Gloria (page 121) Let us pray

God of the covenant, in our baptism you called us to proclaim the coming of your kingdom: give us courage, as you gave it to the apostles, that we may faithfully witness to your love and peace in every circumstance of life; in the name of Jesus Christ our Redeemer, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

MINISTRY OF THE WORD Psalm 30

I will exalt you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up from the depths:

and have not suffered my foes to triumph over me.

O Lord my God, I cried to you:

and you have made me whole.

You brought me back, O Lord, from the land of silence:

you saved my life from among those that go down to the Pit.

Sing praises to the Lord, all you his faithful ones:

and give thanks to his holy name.

For if in his anger is havoc, in his good favour is life:

heaviness may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.

In my prosperity I said ‘I shall never be moved:

your goodness, O Lord, has set me on so firm a hill.’

Then you hid your face from me:

and I was greatly dismayed.

I cried to you, O God:

and made my petition humbly to my Lord.

‘What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the Pit:

can the dust give you thanks, or declare your faithfulness?

‘Hear, O Lord, and be merciful:

O Lord, be my helper.’

You have turned my lamentation into dancing:

you have put off my sackcloth and girded me with joy,

That my heart may sing your praise and never be silent:

O Lord my God, I will give you thanks for ever. A reading from Paul’s letter to the Galatians chapter 6 verses 7 to 18

Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith.

May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For the new creation is everything! As for those who will follow this rule—peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.

From now on, let no one make trouble for me; for I carry the marks of Jesus branded on my body.

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers and sisters. Amen.

For the word of the Lord thanks be to God

Gradual Hymn: Darkness Lay Upon the Water

1 Darkness lay upon the waters and the starless heavens swirled, as the formless earth awaited the creating of a world. Over all the Spirit brooded, like a patient mother bird, for the leaping of the morning at the speaking of a word. 2 In another age of darkness children stumbled, blind from birth, as the Word of God, incarnate, moved again upon the earth, with the re-creating promise that the sightless would be healed, and perceive the new creation that the light of God revealed. 3 Every soul will sit with darkness, every eye will long for light, every heart will lose direction in the swirling, starless night. Still the one who speaks the morning moves beside us on the way; knowing this we know that darkness always holds the hope of day. Words © Michael Hudson, admin. Church Publishing Inc.

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia The Word of the Lord lasts forever What is the word that is living? It is bought to us by God’s son Jesus Christ Alleluia

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke, chapter 10 beginning at the 1st verse. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ

After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house!’ And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the labourer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house.

Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near.’ I tell you, on that day it will be more tolerable for Sodom than for that town.

The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!” He said to them, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

At that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things

from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

Then turning to the disciples, Jesus said to them privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.”

For the Gospel of the Lord praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

Offertory Hymn: The Summons

Will you come and follow me if I but call your name? Will you go where you don’t know and never be the same? Will you let my love be shown, will you let my name be known, Will you let my life be grown in you and you in me? Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name? Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same? Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare? Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me? Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name? Will you set the pris’ners free and never be the same? Will you kiss the leper clean, and do such as this unseen, And admit to what I mean in you and you in me? Will you love the ‘you’ you hide if I but call your name? Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same? Will you use the faith you’ve found to reshape the world around, Through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me? Lord, your summons echoes true when you but call my name. Let me turn and follow you and never be the same. In your company I’ll go where your love and footsteps show. Thus I’ll move and live and grow in you and you in me. Lyrics: John L. Bell, © 1987, The Iona Community. GIA Publications, Inc., North American agent. Music: Trad. Scottish Melody

***some thoughts from Rev. Mel I moved my office around this week. I had it set up in a way that meant I had to step over the cord to my computer in order to leave my desk and a few times recently I had tripped as I was rushing about. So I took an hour on Wednesday evening to move my desk so that it is safer. There are several bonuses that I did not expect – I now have a spot for my little magentic notice board, I have a new and very handy spot for my bible, prayer book, and hymn book (books that I am ALWAYS in), and my little radiator now fits better and keeps my toes warmer than it did! There is a down side though. I now face the built in bookshelves which are in serious need of re-organising (as new books arrive from the book fairies 😉 they often get put in there for reading and organising ‘later’) and I’m now looking straight at them being reminded of that task ahead. That means another hour next week is required to get to that job, but it is always good to look at things from a new perspective don’t you think? It’s good to keep ourselves open to seeing our home, the world, scripture, even church in new ways.

Peace, Mel ***********************************************************
