There is a tremendous need to help students, especially with the learning losses due to COVID-19 and the demand for tutoring and test prep continues to rise. Founded in 1977, Huntington Learning Center is the top-performing franchise in the tutoring industry.

In what ways has your company grown since your NJBIZ award recognition?Huntington Learning Center is experiencing a surge in customer demand and franchise development. What new products or services do you now offer? In 2021, we also celebrated the rst anniversary of our expansion to the West Coast.

Did your company face/overcome any challenges? Our two greatest challenges in the last year have been the COVID environment and the uctuations in the U.S. labor market. In this remote environment it has been so hard to stay in touch with our employees and our clients. We have tried different ways to stay in touch and thank everyone for their support. The most successful events have been the virtual wine tasting and a virtual comedy show.

In what ways does your company currently volunteer within the community? We continue to contribute 2 percent of our revenue to worthy causes. In 2020, we were excited to partner with Rutgers University’s Business School to establish a $25,000 scholarship for underrepresented students through the Of ce of Diversity and Inclusion in hopes it will allow students in need to follow their passion for accounting.

In 1992, Michael Becce founded MRB Public Relations, New Jersey’s largest technology speci c public relations company. He has helped numerous startups get off the ground, as well as consulted for many leading organizations. He has been quoted in countless technology and business publications including the Wall Street Journal, Fortune, Forbes, Success and Businessweek. He is also a distinguished writer published in leading business, technology and marketing publications.

Where has your career taken you since your NJBIZ award recognition? I have of cially launched a new venture—TechJournalists.com, a consortium of more than 80 widely published technology journalists. We have made these journalists available to provide content for vendors, who can log into www.techjournalists.com, sign up and post a writing assignment into our intake form. They will get responses from real journalists that have the time and expertise to write the piece.

What have you learned since winning your award? Since the pandemic has in large part cut out trade shows, it has given me much more time in the of ce. I’ve tried to use that time to slow myself down. I was usually trying to frantically get as much done as I could. I have learned that I can accomplish more when I pay closer attention to important tasks. When I speak to media, clients, peers, etc., I really have conversations. I listen more closely and have gotten pretty good at learning what people really want, as opposed to hearing what they say. This was really what pushed me to take TechJournalists.com to another level.

That is truly when I fell in love with the agency’s mission, vision and people.

Looking ahead, where do you see yourself and/or your company in ve years?Looking ahead, my goal is to evolve as a strong C-suite leader and advocate for individuals with disabilities and work closely with my colleagues to ensure that Inroads to Opportunities continues to successfully meet the needs of the individuals we currently serve, broaden our reach and scope to support many others and continue to develop the agency to remain a leader in our service areas, which include vocational preparation, school-to-work transition and mental health services.

Widely known for his work on novel therapies for mantle cell lymphoma, having been principal investigator or co-investigator of the studies behind all four drugs approved to treat mantle cell lymphoma, Andre Goy, M.D., MS currently oversees the delivery of cancer care across the entire Hackensack Meridian Health network.

Where has your career taken you since your NJBIZ award recognition? There have been many milestones: becoming part of Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer cancer, the opening of the Hackensack Meridian Center for Discovery and Innovation and the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, as well as our partnership with Memorial Sloan Kettering—it has been an honor to serve as chair of John Theurer Cancer Center to participate in these achievements. Integrating as a health network, I now serve as physician-in-chief of oncology for Hackensack Meridian Health and founding chair of oncology for the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine.

What have you learned since winning your award? Perhaps what has impressed me the most is how the people I work with always rise to the challenge. I will always remember the dedication of my colleagues, the nurses and every team member, during COVID-19, working to keep our patients and our program safe, empowering us to deliver uninterrupted cancer care for our patients, who counted on us in immeasurable ways. We need to continue to think big—and boldly—this is what made us the best oncology program in our state.

Looking ahead, where do you see yourself and/or your company in ve years? We are at an in ection point in medicine and care delivery. Though there are mounting challenges in our health care system presently, I am very interested in being part of the broader solutions—as we identify ways to reinvent health and health care delivery.

Armed with extensive experience in health care leadership among hopsitals in New Jersey and New York, Gary S. Horan is likely the most experienced hospital CEO in New Jersey with 31 consecutive years as President/CEO. Trinitas is a full-service Catholic teaching hospital that provides care to residents through major services that include behavioral health, cancer, cardiology, emergency medicine and more.

Where has your career taken you since your NJBIZ award recognition? Several years ago we started to investigate if it made sense for us to consider joining the RWJBarnabas Health system. That journey is nearly complete as Trinitas will become part of the RWJBH system on Jan. 1. This transaction, which includes Trinitas operating as before, will ensure the community continues to receive the highest quality health care.

What have you learned since winning your award? I learned anew about the resiliency of the Trinitas staff, who faced this insidious virus head-on and brought a high degree of con dence, innovation and caring to the many patients we treated. They brought these same attributes to the vaccination effort, giving 27,000 vaccines to the community in a relatively short period of time.

Any new experiences/updates you would like to share? My wife Arlene and I welcomed a new granddaughter in November. She is our third grandchild.

In what ways do you currently volunteer within the community? represented dozens of clients in New Jersey. Her

extensive experience in government affairs combines with a business background

to allow her to effectively articulate each client’s perspective and to play an active

role in the development of policy affecting the rm’s diverse clientele.

Where has your career taken you since your NJBIZ award recognition? Our

Bill Murray runs MWWPR’s regional and 50-state Public Affairs practice. A xture in public and government affairs for decades, he has provided expert counsel to hundreds of companies, executives and public of cials, crafting strategic and focused campaigns that have left a lasting positive impact on businesses, organizations and constituencies in New Jersey and nationwide.

What have you learned since winning your award? Managing employees, motivating individuals and moving business and public policy interests during the pandemic required us to learn new tools and skill sets, adopt different standards of engagement and formulate new expectations of people. I learned to be more patient and more empathetic, while still driving personal, business and public policy objectives forward.

In what ways do you currently volunteer within the community? I’ve always supported local charities and community organizations, especially in New Jersey. In the face of the pandemic, I placed as much of my charitable focus as possible on helping those struggling with mental illness. In particular, this included the Mental Health Association in New Jersey. I also spent a large amount of time nding ways to support the chambers of commerce and other business organizations in New Jersey.

Any new experiences/updates you would like to share? Dr. Patrick Smith leads a global team of drug development scientists that creates value for clients across the entire life cycle and ultimately accelerates patient access to medicines. With more than 20 years of drug development experience, he has worked across all phases of drug development with deep expertise in infectious diseases, oncology, and in ammation, as well as novel early development program design and applying modeling and simulation to solve critical development problems.

Where has your career taken you since your NJBIZ award recognition? I was promoted from Senior Vice President of Integrated Drug Development (IDD) Strategy and Innovation to President of IDD at Certara. I am honored to lead the global drug development services team’s 200+ members based in the U.S., UK, Australia and Africa.

What have you learned since winning your award? The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the vital role that biosimulation (computer-aided modeling and simulation integrated with pharmaceutical and biological science) can play in improving global health. In the initial stages of the pandemic, we used our biosimulation software to help determine which on-market drugs could be repurposed to create safe and effective treatments for COVID-19. More recently, we have collaborated with major pharmaceutical companies to answer important questions about COVID-19 vaccines. In addition Certara began trading on The Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol “CERT.”

Looking ahead, where do you see yourself and/or your company in ve years?Certara’s biosimulation software is being used by most major pharmaceutical companies and global regulatory agencies. As a result, we are actively recruiting clinical pharmacologists and pharmacometricians worldwide so we can grow our global teams.

A pediatrician and infectious disease expert, Bonita Stanton, M.D. earned distinctions as a health investigator living and working in the poorest parts of Dhaka, Bangladesh, studying diarrheal diseases. She has authored more than 325 peer-reviewed papers, and has served as editor of several textbooks. As the Founding Dean of Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine she is helping to write the future of 21st century medicine.

Where has your career taken you since your NJBIZ award recognition? At the time I was offered my current role with Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, I, along with two other co-principal investigators, had just been awarded a large multi-site grant from the National Institutes of Health. After a year, I realized that I would not be able to do both. While to some extent I did—and still do—feel that sense of loss, I also enjoy a greater sense of purpose in creating a medical school that offers the U.S. and challenged countries around the globe the opportunity to overcome health de ciencies.

What have you learned since winning your award? Since the arrival of COVID-19, my role with Hackensack Meridian Health expanded to include serving as a vaccinator and then as a supervisor of the student-vaccinators throughout multiple weekends in the late winter and spring of 2021. It was such a ful lling experience, seeing the students interacting with people, doing some good, and developing friendships.

Looking ahead, where do you see yourself and/or your company in ve years?I cannot imagine a more ful lling way to have spent the past ve years of my career since I assumed the role of creating a new type of medical school. Over the next two years, my cabinet members and I plan to complete the accreditation processes for the Liaison Committee for Medical Education and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Kenneth Van Leeuwen, CFP, founded Van Leeuwen & Company in 1997 and is responsible for the overall strategic direction, as well as serving clients, which include corporate executives, nonpro t organizations, and people who have made the U.S. their home. He has also appeared numerous times on CNBC’s business news program, “Power Lunch,” and is often quoted as an industry professional.

What have you learned since winning your award? I’ve recognized that allocating my time to expand upon my unique ability with our clients, which is taking their goals and making them my own, is what’s most important to the rm. This approach spans across my entire team and has empowered them to support our clients and lead all daily operations, allowing me to be the rm’s strategic leader.

Any new experiences/updates you would like to share? Most of my biggest updates revolve around my wonderful family. My daughter, Katie, got married to a great guy. Additionally, my son, James, who is special needs with Autism, has been able to get back into his regular working routine at VLC after the pandemic had interrupted his schedule.

In what ways do you currently volunteer within the community? This past July, I joined the A Step Up Academy board, an organization that serves the growing population of young children on the Autism spectrum.

Looking ahead, where do you see yourself and/or your company in ve years? As my team takes on more responsibility, I see myself continuing to be a strategic visionary while also supporting our clients’ every need. I anticipate working and providing wisdom to the team for as long as I can, though plan to gradually sell ownership stakes to some of my current employees as part of my long-term succession plan.

Vincent Vicari is a Bergen County native who joined the NJSBDC network in 2008 after a successful and wide-ranging career in retail management, sales, food service, higher education and consulting. As Regional Director, he has increased the pro le of the SBDC by enjoining private and public industry stakeholders to attract Bergen County regional business clients, provide services focused on population diversity, and improve the business and political positioning of the center to service traditional and non-traditional clients.

What have you learned since winning your award? I have learned that our future is dependent upon our collective ability to embrace diversity, give back to society, have empathy, and treat others as you wish to be treated. Division solves nothing. Growing up, my father taught me that a competitor is not the enemy but a referral source.

In what ways do you currently volunteer within the community? I hope to live up to the legacy of service my family has displayed. My parents, Mary Rose M. Vicari and Robert Phillip Vicari, contributed to the Englewood community until their 90s. As an adjunct professor for 31 years, spanning Passaic County Community College, Bergen Community College and William Paterson University, I have aimed to teach my students that they can elevate themselves by helping others through acts of volunteerism.

Looking ahead, where do you see yourself and/or your company in ve years?I have been fortunate to be in a position where I can make a positive impact on “main street businesses” every day. In the next ve years, I hope to continue to make huge differences in bettering the lives of New Jersey residents. I would like to bring the New Jersey Small Business Development Center’s services to more diverse populations.
