CHIMNEY APPLICATIONSCANADAYour UltimateONE chimney has beentested per ULC-S629 Standard for 650°CFactory-Built Chimneys. As such it iscode approved for connection to solid, liquid or gas fueled residential typeappliances and building heatingappliances with maximum continuousflue gas temperatures of 650°C (1200°F).UltimateONE has also been tested perULC-S604 Standard for Factory-BuiltType A Chimneys for connection to gasand oil fired appliances with continuousflue gas temperatures up to 540°C(1000°F).The installation should be in accordancewith the Installation Code CAN/CSA-B365 (Installation Code for Solid-Fuel-Burning Appliances and Equipment). TheNational Building Code of Canada andProvincial Building Code, etc. shouldalso be consulted.
U.S.A.Your UltimateONE chimney has beentested per UL-103 Standard for Factory-Built Chimneys for Residential Type andBuilding Heating Appliances as "TypeHT". As such it is code approved forconnection to solid, liquid or gas fueledresidential type appliances and buildingheating appliances with maximumcontinuous flue gases temperatures of1000°F.
The installation should be in accordancewith NFPA 211 (Standard for Chimneys,Fireplaces, Vents and Solid Fuel BurningAppliances), and / or local and regionalcodes such as the InternationalMechanical Code, Uniform MechanicalCode, etc.
PRE-INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
Plan the installation of your applianceand chimney in such a way that both yourchimney and your chimney connector(stovepipe) run is as short and straight aspossible. By having too long and / ormultiple offset installations you can reducesystem draft which can affect theoperation of your appliance and / or thechimney system. The chimney should belocated within the building so as to avoidcutting or altering load bearing memberssuch as joists, rafters, studs, etc. If youhave to cut or alter an existing load bearingmember, special reframing methods arerequired which often include doubling ofadjacent members. If such a case arises, contact your local Building Code Officialregarding local regulations and properinstallation methods.
Prior to starting the installation, contactthe local building officials in your area, todetermine the need for any necessarybuilding permits, and to ensure that yourinstallation will conform with all local, provincial / state and national coderequirements. Contact your insuranceprovider to determine if an inspection bya Certified Professional is required.
Sections of the UltimateOne chimneywhich pass through accessible areas ofthe building such as closets, storage areas, occupied spaces or any place where thesurface of the chimney could be contactedby persons or combustible materials mustbe enclosed in a chase (framed in). Thechase may be fabricated using standardbuilding materials. Drywall mounted on 2”x 4” studs is typically used in this situation.Except for installation in single and twofamily dwellings, factory-built chimneysshall be enclosed with approved wallshaving a fire resistance rating equal orgreater than that of the floor, wall or roofassemblies through which they pass. Theminimum airspace clearance between theouter wall of the chimney and the enclosureshall be at least 2 inches.
MAINTAIN A 2" MINIMUM AIR SPACECLEARANCE BETWEEN INSULATED CHIMNEYSECTIONS AND COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS.
FIGURE 1
3 ftmin
The ideal location for your chimney iswithin the building envelope. In coldclimates, the use of external chimneysmay result in operational problems suchas poor draft, excessive condensation ofcombustion products and rapidaccumulation of creosote. Under thesecircumstances, installation of the chimneywithin the building is stronglyrecommended.
If the chimney must be installed on anexterior wall it is recommended that thechimney be enclosed below the roof lineto protect the chimney from cold outdoortemperatures. This may help reducecondensation, creosote formation andenhance draft. Provide an access doorby the Tee Cap for chimney inspectionand cleaning. The exterior enclosuremay be insulated, maintaining therequired minimum air space clearance of2" (50mm) to any part of the chimney.Consult local codes for cold climateapplications.
Do not install the chimney directly at theoutlet of the appliance. Interconnectingsmoke pipe is required unless theappliance is specifically approved fordirect connection to a chimney.
Be sure that ladders are in good conditionand always rest on a level firm surface.
Be sure that electrically powered toolsare properly grounded.
SAFETY TIPS - GENERAL
Install inter-connecting stove pipefollowing appliance manufacturer'sinstructions and appropriate coderequirements keeping in mind that thestove pipe run should be as short andstraight as possible and secured in placewith a minimum of 3 sheet metal screwsper joint. Generally, for a wood burningappliance installation, an 18" minimumclearance to combustibles must bemaintained for a single wall stove pipe.NOTE: The exception to this is a doublewall stove pipe, such as Selkirk's ModelDCC which can be installed at reducedclearances to combustibles. Seeseparate installation instructions formore details.
Your UltimateOne chimney andconnecting stove pipe diameter shouldbe sized in accordance with the appliancemanufacturer’s recommendations.
Authorities require that the chimneyextend not less than 3 feet (900 mm)above the highest point where it passesthrough the roof of a building and not lessthan 2 feet (600 mm) above any portionof the building within 10 feet (3 m). SeeFigure 1 and Chart 2.
There should be no draft regulators onsolid fuel equipment or in smoke pipeconnectors.

Make sure that the chimney will notintersect a structural member whenpassing through a wall, ceiling, roof orfloor.
If the chimney is going to intersect astructural member, either offset thechimney or move the appliance so thestructural integrity of the house will bemaintained.
Your chimney has been tested, andlisted using all of the supports, shields, etc., described herein.
Deletion or modification of any of therequired parts or materials may
seriously impair the safety of yourinstallation and void the certification
and / or warranty of this chimney.
Situate the chimney in the structure sothat it can be installed without cuttingjoists, sills, plates or load bearing partitionsor members. If you, do follow local codes.
Connect only one solid fuel burningappliance to a chimney.
A minimum smoke pipe connector lengthof 3 feet (1 m) between appliance andchimney is recommended.
Your UltimateONE chimney system isdesigned for installation using standardbuilding materials and procedures. Thefollowing tools may be required:-SAFETY GLOVES-SAFETY GOGGLES-HAMMER AND NAILS-TIN SNIPS-TAPE MEASURE-SCREWDRIVER AND PLIERS-PLUMB LINE AND LEVEL-SQUARE-KEYHOLE SAW OR POWER JIGSAW-CAULKING GUNOther tools or equipment may be required, depending on your chimney location andthe structure in which it is to be installed.
INSULATION COMPRESSION OF THEUltimateONEBefore assembling chimney lengths toone another, the insulation on the inletend (held in place with a plastic retainer)should be below the outer bead so that itcan compress during assembly. Theoutlet end, should be full of insulation(held in place with a white paper retainerand the thermal reduction spacer) to thetop of the length. Once you haveassembled the lengths together install aLocking Band.
With the insulation being compressed, this will provide insulation to insulationcontact (see Figure 2).
NOTE: When the insulation retainersmelt or volatilize during high temperatureoperation, the compressed insulation willfill in.FIGURE 2

Use only with an appliance listed by arecognized testing authority such asUnderwriters Laboratories Inc.,Underwriters Laboratories of Canada,Intertek Testing Services, WarnockHersey, OMNI or CSA. EPA Approvedappliances are highly recommended.
The flue diameter of gas or oil firedappliances should comply with theappropriate Installation Codes such asCAN/CSA-B139 (oil) or CAN/CSA-B149(gas) when installed in Canada, and theNational Fuel Gas Code NFPA 54 / ANSIZ223.1 (gas) and NFPA 31 (oil) in theUnited States.
The use of a chimney cleaning brushcould also cause the joints to separate ifnot securely locked.
TYPES OF APPLIANCES
High internal gas temperatures in achimney force the internal pipe to expand. This, in turn, could cause the joints toseparate if they are not securely locked.

Screw it to thesupport using the self drilling screwsprovided. Install additional chimneylengths as required making sure that youinstall a Joist Shield (JS) where thechimney penetrates the ceiling.
NOTE: The JS is installed from the bottomand secured solidly to the framing. TheRSRS is designed to slide like a telescopeand adjust from 43" to 103" (see Figures17a & b). Pull the RSRS up around thechimney and fasten to the flange of theJoist Shield.
Multiple RSRS may be use together ifrequired. If the chimney is enclosedthrough additional floors repeat theprocedure starting at the top of the JSuntil the chimney is installed in the attic.
NOTE: In Canada, an enclosed chimneyrequires a Supplemental Radiation Shieldconnecting to the Joist Shield and theAttic insulation Shield.
NOTE: If the chimney is to be enclosed inthe attic, The Attic Insulation Shield (AIS)is not required.
Continue installing chimney sections upthrough the roof opening. Lower a RSRStube through the roof opening and adjustit so that it can be attached to the upperpart of the JS Joist Shield.
Adjust the length of the RSRS so that itterminates just above the roof openingand into the flashing cone.
Fasten all sections of the RSRS to eachother. Each section telescopes from 43"to 103".

Two types of Attic Insulation Shields areavailable - an Attic Insulation Shield (AIS)and an Alternate Attic Insulation Shield(AAIS).
Pull the bottom half of the FSRS up overthe bottom elbow in the same manner.Secure the two halves together at aconvenient location between the elbows. If the offset is close to the top or bottomof the enclosure you may need to shortenone half of the FSRS and attach the extralength to the other half. Install an offsetsupport on a vertical length above theoffset. Cut an opening in the FSRS toaccomodate the straps to pass through. The offset support may also be secured tothe roof if necessary. See Offset Sectionin these instructions.
Position the base of the Attic InsulationShield on top of the framed opening.Insert the notched spacer tabs within theframed opening until fully seated.
The Attic Insulation Shield is designed toadjust for a variety of attic heights. It ispreferable to position the shield as highas the attic will allow to provide shieldingfrom insulation.
Slide the upper (telescoping) shield upas high as possible (keeping minimum of1" overlap), and secure to the lower fixedshield using the sheet metal screwsprovided through the pre-punched holes(see Figure 19).
ATTIC INSULATION SHIELDS
Attic Insulation Shield (AIS)InstallationThe Attic Insulation Shield is shippedpre-assembled at a height of 11 inchesbut telescopes to allow for a depth ofinsulation up to 18-1/2".
The opening must be fully framed on all4 sides at 2 inches of clearance tocombustibles as per the FramingDimensions in Table 1.
The function of the Attic Insulation Shieldis to keep insulation away from contactwith the chimney. Certain insulationsmade of cellulose fiber (old newspapers, processed wood) may ignite and smolderdue to heat trapped by contact with thechimney. When this smoldering firereaches wood framing, a fire may result. However, even without a flame, asmoldering fire may create noxious gasesand cause property damage.

Secure the base to the framing with atleast 2 nails or screws per side.
Lower TelescopingShield
The lower telescoping portion of the AISprovides supplemental joist shielding.Insure it is properly extended downthrough this area.
After the chimney section has beeninstalled through the Attic InsulationShield, install the Attic Insulation ShieldCollar around the pipe and lower to meetthe top spacer brackets (see Figure 19).Fasten the Collar by sliding the tabsthrough the appropriate slots and bendtabs backward to secure collar in place.
NOTE: If the chimney in the atticspace is to be enclosed the AtticInsulation Shield is not required, but a Supplemental RadiationShield is.
Caution - Risk of fire!If the chimney within the attic space isto be enclosed, the AIS must be left outor removed. Do not enclose the AtticInsulation Shield in combustibleconstruction. If at a later date, thechimney is to be enclosed in combustibleconstruction in the attic area, removethis insulation shield (by removing thefasteners at the base) before doing so.When enclosing, maintain the minimum2" airspace clearance to combustibles.A Firestop Joist Shield must be installedfrom the living space into an attic area.(See Figure 20).
NOTE: In the USA - When the chimneyis enclosed in the attic area from a livingspace a Firestop Joist Shield (JS) mustbe installed into the attic (see Figure20).
CANADA ONLYNOTE: When the chimney is to beenclosed in the attic space aSupplemental Radiation Shield must beinstalled (see Figure 18b). Do not installthe Attic Insulation Shield. If the atticspace is above a living space a RadiationJoist Shield (JS) must be installed frombelow.

When necessary to offset the chimneyin order to pass through an upstairscloset or to clear a joist or otherobstruction, the use of 15o or 30o
insulated elbows is recommended.Elbows rotate 360 degrees to providethe exact orientation required. Elbowsmay be used at the same 2" airspaceclearance as chimney sections.
Two pair (four) of 15o or 30o elbows maybe used. The maximum permissible anglewith solid fuel installations is 30 degrees. The maximum length of chimney allowedbetween elbows is 8 feet.A 45o Elbow is also available for gas andoil fired appliance venting applicationsand with specified ULC-S610 Factory-Built Fireplaces where referenced inthe fireplace installation instructions.

FIGURE 46 - Standard Wall Band
The Standard Wall Band (Figure 46) providesthe required 2" (50mm) minimum clearance. For lateral stability of the chimney above theWall Support, a Wall Band must be installedalong an outside wall.
Where horizontal adjustability is needed, aUniversal Wall Band can be use. For moredetailed instructions see the Universal WallBand section, Steps 1 through 9 and Figures44 through 45b.
1. To ensure chimney stability above thewall support, Wall Bands must be usedevery 8 feet (2.4m) above the support. Forsystems shorter than 8', at least one WallBand must be installed.
2. Secure the Wall Band bracket to the wallusing two (2) 6d (2") spiral nails or #8 x 2"wood screws through the pre-drilled holes(see Figure 46). For concrete or brick veneerwalls, use suitable masonry fasteners orother anchoring systems.
3. Check for clearances and plumb as youfasten the Wall Bands to the wall. Use alevel against the chimney sections at eachsupport stage to keep the assembly plumb.
Fasten the Wall Band securely around thechimney with the supplied nut and bolt tosecure the chimney length within the band.

CEILING/CATHEDRAL SUPPORT -PITCHED CEILING OR ROOFAPPLICATION
The Round or Square Ceiling / CathedralSupports (Figures 47 and 48) are alsosuitable for steep pitched cathedralceilings, vaulted ceilings or an attic withgreater than average insulation depth. Itprovides a finished appearance at theceiling level. See Table 2 for the maximumsupporting capacity of the selectedsupport.
The basic steps necessary to install around or square ceiling support in acathedral or pitched ceiling or roofapplication are similar to the installationfor a horizontal framed opening exceptthat it is being installed in a framedopening that is sloped. As such theframing members must all be oriented sothat their exposed faces (through whichthe box will extend) need to be vertical -asshown in Figures 47 and 48.
1. Cut and frame (on all 4 sides) the holesin the ceiling or roof where the chimneywill pass. The opening will be rectangularbut still must be plumb and in perfectalignment with each other. Insure thatthe framing dimension is measured in thehorizontal plane (see Figure 47 and 48).Refer to Table 1 for the required framingdimensions.

b. Temporarily secure each bracketin place with a nail driven (onlypartially) through one of the pre-punched holes in the bracketdown into the top side of theframed opening.
NOTE: In this instance the Support Collarsupplied with the Round support will notbe used and:
3. Place the Square or round CeilingSupport into the framed opening andtemporarily center it, then adjust tothe desired elevation - keeping inmind that the bottom of the box mustextend downat least flush with orbelow the finished ceiling level on allsides.
4. Scribe a mark on the support alongthe top edge of each L-bracket. (Ifinstalling through the roof, extendthe lines to the corners of the box (oredges of round support) forsubsequent trimming of portions thatwould otherwise extend above theroof).
5. Remove the support and brackets.Using the scribed lines createdpreviously, place a bracket on eachof the outside faces of the support sothat the top edge of the bend in thebracket is in alignment with thescribed line and the bracket iscentered on the outside face of thesupport (see Figure 9c). Secureeach bracket to the suppor (with twoself-tapping, hex head screws)through the holes provided in thebracket and into the wall of thesupport. Secure each bracket to thesupport (with two self-tapping, hexhead screws) through the holesprovided in the bracket and into thewall of the support.
6. From the top, set the support backdown into the framed opening so thatthe L-brackets again rest on the topsurface of the framed opening andthe support is now suspended in theopening. Check for proper fit, plumband proper support extension downthrough framing to or below the lowestceiling level. Adjust as necessary.
7. Remove the portion of the supportabove the lines that would otherwiseextend above the roof.
8. Secure the brackets to the top sideof the framed opening with minimumof two (2) 1/8" (3mm) shaft by 1-1/2"(38mm) long nails or wood screwsper bracket.
9. Set the Lower Bucket down into thetop opening until it rests in the bottomof the support.
10. At the location where the boxpenetrates the finished ceiling, fit theU-Shaped trim plates around the boxand secure in place with small nails orscrews through holes provided.
NOTE: The U-Shaped trim plates areused on opposite ends of the box tooverlap and trim pff the small gapsbetween the box and the finishedceiling material. Any small remaininggaps may be caulked and painted ifdesired.

MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING OF THE CHIMNEY
CA

ith a new installation, the chim
ney should beinspected frequently to determ
ine the rate of creosote formation.
When wood is burned slowly, it producestar and other organic vapors, whichcombine with expelled moisture to formcreosote. The creosote vapors condensein the relatively cool chimney flue of aslow-burning fire. As a result, creosoteresidue accumulates on the flue lining. When ignited, this creosote can create achimney fire with extremely hightemperatures.
With a new installation, the chimneyshould be inspected frequently (every 2wks) to determine the rate of creosoteformation. When familiar with theappliance and chimney characteristics, the chimney should be inspected at leastonce every 2 months during the heatingseason to determine if a creosote or sootbuild-up has occurred. Check sparkarrester screens at least every 2 to 4weeks. If the spark arrester becomesclogged with creosote, it should be cleanedor replaced.
If creosote or soot has accumulated, itshould be removed to reduce the risk ofchimney fire. Depending on the rate ofbuildup (as little as 1/16") and as youlearn what is going on in the chimney, youcan adjust your cleaning scheduleaccordingly. Every chimney flue and fluepipe shall be inspected annually and
The need for chimney maintenancedepends on the kind of appliance andhow it is operated. Gas and oil-burningappliances need very little, but wood-burning appliances may need a greatdeal of chimney maintenance.
How you burn wood in your stove orfireplace directly affects the formation ofcreosote. Use more dry kindling andpaper first to warm up the chimney systemto a temperature between 350o to 500o F.Burn hot, bright fires and fire each loadhot. It is important to load your applianceproperly and to avoid smoldering fires.Fast, effective start-ups are important, asis the moisture content of the wood beingburned. If your wood is not completelyseasoned, split your wood in smallerpieces instead of larger ones. Ideally, themoisture content of your firewood shouldbe between 18 to 22%. A good investmentin assisting you in monitoring your systemis a surface thermometer for single wallstove pipe or a probe thermometer fordouble wall stove pipe. Ensure that onlylow sulphur content coal (1% or less)such as anthracite is burned.
cleaned as often as may be necessary tokeep the chimney and flue pipe free fromdangerous accumulation of combustible.Chimney and flue pipe are particularlysusceptible to off-season condensation. The incomplete combustion of woodproduces acids which, when combinedwith moisture, are corrosive. During theheating season, corrosion tends not tooccur because the heat in the systemevaporates the condensation of any watervapour that may be formed.
Warm, moist air during the summermonths passes slowly through the heatingsystem. It makes any remaining ash orcreosote moist and soggy. Corrosion ofsteel occurs where these deposits remain.
Off-season corrosion can be reducedconsiderably if the system is thoroughlycleaned after the last fire of the heatingseason. Where coal is burned, the systemmust be thoroughly cleaned within 48hours of shutting down the system for theseason and all soot be removed from thechimney system. This should be the mostcareful cleaning the system receives allyear. Air inlets should be closed andsealed if necessary to prevent the constantflow of air through the system.
Contact a professional certified chimneysweep for chimney cleaning services andadvice if you have any doubts about yourability to clean your chimney system or ifthe task is too large. To visually inspectthe chimney, remove the Round Top byloosening the nut and bolt from thesecuring band. If an Insulated Tee isinstalled, remove the Tee Cap. This willpermit the insertion of a flashlight forinspection and a properly sized plasticchimney cleaning brush. A metal brushmay scratch the liner and lead to prematurecorrosion.
Be sure to replace the Round TopTermination and the Tee Cap when youare finished inspecting and cleaning thechimney.
If chemical cleaner is used to assist incleaning your chimney, make sure it is aproduct which is non corrosive. Selkirkwill assume no liability for damageresulting from the use of chemicalcleaners. It does not replace the need fora mechanical cleaning. The optimalmethod for cleaning a chimney is by amechanical brushing of the chimney inconjunction with a complete evaluation
CHIMNEY FIRES AND WHAT TODO ABOUT THEMYour UltimateONE chimney is not intendedor designed for use as a combustion orfire chamber. It is very easy to overfireyour woodburning appliance with kindling, scrap lumber, brush or any fast burningfuel. This can produce flames and hightemperatures all the way up the chimney, and may cause chimney damage.
If you see your appliance or the stove pipeglowing red, you are risking chimneydamage, or a fire. The creosote may beburning inside the chimney. If you seeflames coming out the top, you are eitheroverfiring or there is a chimney fire. Thefollowing materials should not be burnedin your woodburning appliance: pressuretreated lumber, rail road ties, salt waterdriftwood or plastic. Burning suchmaterials may lead to severe corrosion ofthe appliance and the chimney system.
If the fire in your appliance has gotten outof control, or if you suspect a chimney firefor any reason, follow these steps:
1. Immediately close all dampers and/orair entrance openings to your appliance. This includes doors on Franklin typestoves. Block off fireplace openings.2. Alert your family to the possible danger.3. Inspect your appliance and chimneysurroundings for possible fire. If in doubt, alert your Fire Department.4. Do not continue to use your applianceuntil it and your chimney have beenthorougly inspected. Overheating cancause metal parts to expand, buckle andcrack. If you are not certain, have acertified wood technician or certifiedchimney sweep disassemble all parts sothey can be inspected and replaced.5. Do not use salt or water on the fire inyour appliance. Salt is corrosive andwater will cause a dangerous steamexplosion. You might be able to controlthe fire by using ashes, sand or bakingsoda, since baking soda is an ingredientused for dry chemical fire extinguishers.6. After a chimney fire, when it is safe to doso, check internal locations such as theattic and under the roof and keep watchingfor two or three hours. There may bedelayed smoldering and subsequentignition, even if the fire inside the chimneyhas been controlled.

BUILDING A FIRENo matter what method you will use tobuild a fire, review the hints and warningsbelow to ensure proper fire starting.
Fully open the combustion air control. Youmay also open an adjacent window duringthe first 5 to 10 minutes if additional air isneeded.
Make certain the chimney is draftingupward. Some chimneys will need to beprimed or warmed up before they willdraw sufficiently to start a fire. Thiscould depend on too short of a chimney;quantity of offsets; a cold outside chimney;appliance is located in the basement; localgeography or nearby obstuctions.
Do not light a kindling fire until the chimneybegins drawing, repeat the procedurebelow as often as necessary if the initialattempt is unsuccessful.
Prepare the kindling. Open the combustionair control. Roll up some newspaper, lightit and place it near the flue area until thechimney begins to draw. Once a draft hasbeen established, start a kindling fire.
Add 3 or 4 small pieces of dry firewoodto the kindling.
Open the air control fully, light thenewspaper and close the door withoutlatching.
Once there is a hot kindling fire and thechimney is producing a strong draft, closeand latch the door.
When the flames from the kindlingdeminish, add several small pieces offirewood 3" to 4" in diameter, stacked onand behind the burning kindling.
It is advisable to wait for the fire to bereduced to hot embers before re-loading.
Before re-loading open the combustionair control fully. The door should also beopened slowly.
Contact a local hearth dealer in your areafor expert advice and helpful information.
TO BUILD A KINDLING FIRE - Read thesupplied Owner's Manual of the appliancefor important detailed information on howto operate the appliance and to start andbuild a fire.
Use plenty of crumpled newspaper anddry, finely split kindling. Place 4 to 5crumpled sheets of newspaper (balledup fairly tight) in the firebox behind theandirons.
Place 10 to 15 pieces of small kindling onand behind the paper so that thecombustion air reaches the newspaperand to ensure a proper temperature hasbeen reached.
BURN ONLY SEASONEDFIREWOOD!Wood burns completely only at very hightemperatures with enough oxygenpresent. The fuel, heat, and oxygen haveto mix together in the same place at thesame time. Although all stages of burningwood actually occur at the same time, itwill burn in 3 stages: boiling off the water, vaporizing wood gases and burning thecharcoal.
Wood burning appliances will burn bestwith clean, well seasoned dry firewoodwith an ideal moisture content of 18% to22%. The denser or heavier the woodwhen dry, the greater its heat value.Seasoned firewood is essential for anoptimum performance. Seasoned woodwill burn hot, emit less smoke and createless creosote.
Un-seasoned wood when burned, mustrelease water stored within the wood. This cools the fire, creates creosote andhampers a complete burn. Be careful ofwood advertised as seasoned. You maywant to invest in a moisture meter.
Signs of seasoned firewood are:- Dark colored; wood darkens with age;- Cracks in the end grain; radiating fromthe center of the log like bicycle spokes;- Light in weight; which indicates lowmoisture content - but hardwood will weighmore than softwood;- Sound; hit 2 pieces together, wet willhave a dull "thud" sound where as dry willring like a bat hitting a baseball;- Easily peeled or broken bark; no greenshould show under the bark;- Burn some; if it hisses, then it is to wet.
FUELS TO AVOID: Do not burn saltwaterdriftwood, treated wood, wax logs, coals, garbage, plastics or rubber. Fuelother than firewood mayburn excessively hotleading to damages to thechimney system andbecome a serious firehazard.
- Store above ground at least a foot andaway from buildings in a sunny, wellventilated area;- Cover the top to keep rain and dew off thewood;- Leave sides open to breezes; for aircirculation.
AVOID BURNING "green", "unseasoned""wet" wood. Heat is wasted as it must firstdry and evaporate the moisture content inthe firewood. As the water evaporates itwill form into creosote which will thencondense in the relatively cool firebox andchimney and will not permit a clean hotburn.
WARNING:DO NOT USE FUEL MATERIALS
CORROSIVE TOTHE CHIMNEY LINER SUCH AS
DRIFTWOOD,PLASTICS, CHEMICALLYTREATED WOOD, ETC.
The time it takes to season wood variesfrom 6 to 18 months. Hardwood driesslower than softwood and some maytake well over a year to dry. To speed-updrying:- Cut to length;- Split in a variety of sizes no larger than6" exposing the wet interior and increasingthe surface area of each piece;- Stack loosely in a crisscross pattern toget good air circulation;
Read the supplied Owner's Manual of theappliance for important detailedinformation on how to operate theappliance and to start and build a fire.

CHART 2 - CHIMNEY HEIGHT ABOVE THE ROOFREQUIREMENT # 1 : The code requires that the chimney must extend at least 3 feet (900mm)above the highest point of the roof
that it penetrates.REQUIREMENT # 2 : The chimney must also be 2 feet (609mm) above any roof, wall or other obstruction within a horizontal
distance of 10 feet (3m).
The following Chart is to assist you in determining the minimum chimney height you will require above the roof. You may need to addto this height as nearby buildings, trees and other parts of the house roof could interfere with airflow over and around the top of the chimneyand affect its performance. If you think a nearby obstacle could affect draft, you might want to install one or more additional lengths.
* Defaulted to 36" to meet requirement #1. Both requirements (#1 and #2) must be met.• If the chimney extends 5 feet or more above the roof, a Roof Brace Kit is required.
