February 2020

Happy New Year to our family of MMA alumni! I hope you’ve all

marched in to 2020 with health and high spirits, and I wish you

success and happiness as we embark on a new decade.

The Academy has been on a roll this academic year, almost

doubling the total number of cadets enrolled since last year and our

IB program is going strong. We’re looking forward to an amazing

Founder’s Day weekend (April 3-5), with lots to do. On Friday, we’ll

have a cook-out, and a reception at the American Legion. On

Saturday, we’ll hold our annual “Colonel’s Charge” 5K Race, a

parade, then brunch, and in the evening we’ll have an alumni social at the Brew House. Come

celebrate the founding of our beloved academy and revel in our rich history!

I want to share a short list of the hardest-hitting ways you can (easily) help the Academy:

Message from the alumni liaison

Refer a cadet: this ends up making a huge difference

in the quality of education we are able to offer our

corps. (plus, every time a cadet uses an alum’s name

as the reference when enrolling, you get paid 10% of

their tuition rate!)

https://www.militaryschool.com/cadet-referral-program/

Purchase a paver for the wheelchair walkway: this

gives wheelchair access to the Memorial Gym. (and

you will literally set your name in stone on the campus

forever!) https://www.militaryschool.com/paver-campaign/

Volunteer at the school: get in touch with the school to come volunteer and help out during Open

House weekends, or to spend time with the cadets. (need able-bodied female(s) to travel toCanada with the Raiders team free-of-charge in order to allow females to participate!)

It’s an honor to serve as the liaison for the alumni of MMA, and it would be an honor to have you on my

team! If you want to get involved with the Alumni Outreach Committee, please contact me at

[email protected]. We can work together to strengthen our alumni network and give back to

the Academy! No rules, no demands, just forward progress.

Non Nobis Solum!

Dear Fellow MMA Alum,

Last years Colonel’s Charge 5K was the first of many organized anniversary events. The 5K proved to be apopular event with many participants. We had cadets, parents, families, alumni and members of the communityout to enjoy the experience and the beautiful weather. The success of the Colonel’s Charge 5K Run/Walk wasdue in large part to the generosity of our sponsors!Founder’s Day is the time that we come together as members of the MMA community to celebrate ouracademy’s founders. The Colonel’s Charge provides an all-inclusive opportunity for cadets, families, staff, faculty, alumni and community members to celebrate our founders and enjoy the fellowship that makes us anMMA family. This years Colonel's Charge 5K Run/Walk is April 4th at 7:30 am on Founder’s Day weekend. I am once againexcited to be a part of this fun annual event and look forward to creating new memories with each of you!As you know, it takes the support and efforts of many people to organize and plan a successful event. Thereare many opportunities for the alumni family to become involved. Please consider lending your support in oneor more of the following ways:

Documentary helps cadets understand World War II September 2nd will mark the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, making 2020 a year of manymilitary ceremonies. One of the most anticipated celebrations of the 75th anniversary will be the release of the documentary“The Girl Who Wore Freedom.”The documentary is a fantastic way for younger generations to see, hear, and understand the violence andhumanity found in World War II.Massanutten Military Academy’s cadets will watch a viewing of “The Girl Who Wore Freedom” atWoodstock’s Community Theater on April 18th.“Movies are a great way to teach younger students about history,” said Massanutten history teacher Mr.Strong. “Engaging students has always been difficult, but in the digital age it seems to be more difficultthan ever. However, in this case, I think the digital world is our friend because this movie should help ourstudents not only learn about World War II, but hopefully have fun while doing so since they’re watching amovie.”Directed by Christian Taylor, “The Girl Who Wore Freedom” examines the relationship between the citizensof France under Nazi control during World War II and their American liberators. The story focuses on DanyPatrix, who was just 1 year old when Nazi tanks rolled into France. Germany’s four-year occupation ofFrance is seen through the eyes of the young girl, who became famous with American soldiers for herdress made from an American flag.

The biggest moment of the fall sports season didn’t

happen on the campus at Massanutten Military Academy.

In fact, it didn’t happen in this country at all.

The second week in October the Massanutten Raiders

team competed with Robert Land Academy in Wellandport,

Ontario. Raiders coach Sgt. Kurtz led the six-cadet team of

Massanutten cadets on the trip, which, for most of them,

was their first time traveling outside of the country. The six

cadets who earned their trip north of the border were:

Hickman, Hilleary, C. Johnson, Meira, Munshi, and

Semerjian.

In winter sports, all eyes will be on Colonel Layman’s rifle

team to see if the back-to-back state champions can make

it three years in a row. With four of the team’s nine players

returning from last year’s championship squad (Cadet’s

Grochalski, Magee, Pan, and Stone), expectations are

high.

In basketball, both the boys and girls’ teams have showed

a lot of fight and swept all four games against Eukarya

Christian! The PG basketball took the win over Fork Union

Military Academy in an overtime thriller in Memorial Gym!

The Raiders team will be practicing in the winter to prepare

for their spring schedule.
