TRANSCRIPT
Each year, we try to get the kids in
our youth program involved in
different ways for our Zumbi event.
Last year, they participated in a play
for the community. The year before,
they helped with our interactive
booths, which included mask and
instrument making. This year, we
thought it would nice for them to
show us what their idea of Zumbi
was. So, we asked them to do
research at home and draw or
handwrite what they understood of
Zumbi. The results were full of
creativity! It was so nice to see them
run to class so excited about giving us
their homework. We wish we could
include all the kids work but you can
enjoy some throughout this
newsletter! Thank you to all the
parents for your ongoing support!

Celebrating Zumbi, Movement of Liberation
In the early 1600s, formerly enslaved Africans and other escaped sugar plantation laborers began to develop maroon communities and fortified settlements known as mocambos or quilombos. The largest of these was founded in the Serra da Barriga hills about 200 kilometers from the coast of Brazilian coast. What were initially 11 decentral ized African-style vi l lage communities developed into a self-sustaining renegade republic of 30,000 people. In 1655, Zumbi was born free into the maroon community of Quilombo dos Palmares.
Due to Palmares' growing size, agricultural productivity, and well-defended position in the mountains, the colonial Portuguese colonial government saw this renegade republic as a threat. For decades the Portuguese government regularly launched military campaigns against the Palmares. As a result of the Portuguese's goverment's assault on the autonomous community,Zumbi was eventually taken as a prisoner. After his capture, Zumbi was given to a Catholic missionary at the age of 6 years old. During his captivity, he was baptized into the church with the name Francisco. He studied Latin and Portuguese and served the church during their daily mass. In 1670, at the age of 15 years old, he escaped his captivity and returned to the Quilombo dos Palmares.
Using his experience of the Portuguese from his captivity, Zumbi became a powerful military strategist and a leader in the Quilombo dos Palmares. In the late 1670s, the Portuguese colonial government offered to recognize the freedom of the Quilombo's residents under the condition that the leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares submit to the authority of the Portuguese government and accept their use of enslaved African labor. While the leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares accepted this offer, Zumbi argued that the Portuguese would never recognize that Quilombos and their free inhabitants, while others were enslaved and oppressed. Zumbi's refusal of the Portuguese offer resulted in him becoming the new leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares
Zumbi served as the leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares until his capture and execution by the Portuguese government on November 20th, 1695. In Brasi l , the 20th of November is celebrated as Dia da Consciência Negra or Black Awareness Day. Zumbi is remembered as a hero and as a symbol of freedom within the country of Brazil.
It is often the labor and the heart of the artist to provide voices for those stories that yet to be given voice. Through our artistry, we contribute to the cultural heritage that developed from Palmares and their fight for freedom. The shortened lives of Zumbi remind us that our own time is short.
