Introduction to GCSEs GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education) are sat by virtually all pupils at the end of Year 11 (aged 16) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The international version, the IGCSE, is sat in many international schools in over 140 countries worldwide. GCSE (and IGCSE) courses are designed to be taught over two years, in Years 10 and 11, although a start is often made in Year 9. It is normal for pupils to take about 9 GCSEs, with some being compulsory, and others selected from a list of options. At present, GCSEs are assessed through coursework (now called controlled assessment), terminal exams and, in some cases, modular exams during the two year course. The UK government is changing the GCSEs to minimise or eliminate coursework in most subjects, and to scrap modular exams in favour of terminal exams (often called a linear exam system). This is, in essence, precisely what IGCSEs have delivered for some time, and is one of the reasons they have found favour in many UK independent schools in addition to international schools. GCSEs are each graded separately, from A* to G (with a U meaning a grade has not been awarded). Strictly speaking, only a U is a fail, but in practice, grades between A* and C are considered pass grades. The grading system is due to change to a numerical system: 9 to 1 for the new GCSEs. It is still not absolutely clear whether or not this change will apply to IGCSEs, but the outcome is of no particular consequence either way. Cranleigh Abu Dhabi will offer IGCSEs. Various UK exam boards offer IGCSE courses, each of which varies to some extent in subject content and the detail of assessment. However, “Ofqual” (The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) exists to approve each course on behalf of the UK government to ensure parity between GCSEs, IGCSEs and the offerings of the various exam boards, so in terms of the final grade on a piece of paper, it makes no difference what course has been followed in terms of the qualification’s worth. For IGCSE, in most (but not all) subjects, there will be minimal coursework, and all that matters is the final grade achieved when exams are sat in May and June at the end of the two year course. The UK’s system is in stark contrast to countries that have GPAs (grade point averages) and similar. After GCSEs and IGCSEs, most pupils stay at school for Years 12 and 13 to take A levels or, in some, cases, the IB Diploma. Both of these are two year courses, and are a requirement for those going on to university. This booklet will outline the IGCSEs available at Cranleigh Abu Dhabi and assist with the selection of the optional subjects.

Notes on special cases

English Literature Pupils with weak English who the school believes will struggle with English Literature may be allowed to study extra English Language as an alternative.

Compulsory Language Pupils with weak English or severe Special Educational Needs who the school believes will struggle with the IGCSE workload may be allowed to study extra English Language or receive SEN support as an alternative.

Science Most pupils will study each science as a separate IGCSE, leading to 3 IGCSE grades. Pupils who the school believes will struggle with this will sit the (very common) Dual Award Science, in which all three sciences are studied, but in less detail. This leads to the award of 2 IGCSE grades. This decision is not usually taken until end of the first term in Year 10.

Mathematics Some pupils who are exceptionally able mathematicians will sit the Maths IGCSE at the end of Year 10 and then do the Additional Maths IGCSE in Year 11.

Tiers Some subjects have Foundation Tier and Higher Tier papers. Foundation Tier papers are significantly easier, but the maximum accessible grade is a “C”. The vast majority of pupils will sit Higher Tier papers in all subjects. Where Foundation Tier may be more appropriate, this will be discussed with parents. Such a decision is usually taken during the course, and can be made at any stage.

Following Advice In all cases such as those above, the school will always suggest what is best for the pupil, drawing on its experienced teachers and knowledge of your child’s academic ability. Please do follow that advice, recognising the motives and experience behind it.

Options Three must be chosen from: Arabic (first or second language) Art Computing Dance Drama Design and Technology (DT) French Geography History Latin Music Physical Education (PE) Spanish In addition, it may be possible for pupils to sit IGCSEs “off-timetable” for languages in which they are fluent. i.e. these would not require teaching time and can be done as additional GCSEs.

Sports and Activities All pupils will still do two hours of timetabled Games per week, as well as two hours of Extra-Curricular Activities. The option to choose After School Activities remains.

The options selection process Pupils will be able to choose a language from the compulsory languages group, and then three additional optional IGCSEs. Please note that whilst there is choice in what is studied, it is not an option to choose fewer than three additional IGCSEs! It is important to realise that every conceivable combination of options from the choices listed under “Subjects at a glance” cannot be made available for practical reasons, which are common to all schools. The options are taught in three, 3 hour blocks, or groups of subjects. If two subjects are in the same group, unless one of them also exists in a different group (as some will), it is not possible to study both subjects. Only one subject can be chosen from each group. It is not economically viable for every subject to be offered in every group. There would be insufficient staff to teach them all and set sizes would often be only a tiny handful of pupils. The process, then, is that we ask for draft options, firstly from a list with no restrictions. After this, the school will put the options into three groups with the sole aim of giving the majority of pupils access to the subject combinations that they chose at the draft stage. Inevitably, a minority will have to rethink when the options groups are published, and make final choices according to the availability of subjects in the options groups. Whilst this is often a disappointment, it is important to understand that it is rarely critical. Very few doors are closed in terms of future ambition according to what options are chosen for IGCSE. The subjects that can make a significant difference are the compulsory IGCSEs. Generally speaking, pupils should chose options according to what they enjoy, and are likely to do best at.

About this subject

The quality of life we enjoy is a result of mankind’s ability to take natural resources and convert them into useful products. All young people should have an understanding and appreciation of this story, which shaped and continues to shape our planet, and touches our lives every day in every way. Chemistry explains so much of our natural world and is the central science, sitting between Physics on the one hand, and Biology on the other. A knowledge of it will satisfy the most enquiring minds. It is a demanding subject, but its rewards are rich. It teaches a number of useful skills such as analysis, evaluation and problem solving, and there is also an exciting practical component. As the world faces increasing problems of over-population, famine, disease, an energy crisis, climate change and pollution, it is principally chemists who will provide the solutions. Chemists will only become increasingly in demand. Of course, even those with no interest in studying the subject further, or pursuing careers in related disciplines, will still benefit from studying the subject at this level. The world needs responsible citizens who are able to participate in debate, to understand and question what politicians and others tell us, and to reach informed decisions of their own. A knowledge of chemistry is a powerful tool when it comes to understanding many issues of critical global significance. For those wishing to study Chemistry or Biology in Year 12 and beyond, IGCSE Chemistry is essential. Please also see the Science (Dual Award) page.
