Headhunters know about hidden postings Potential employers retain headhunters They screen candidates to determine a match They deal with executive-level candidates

Search professionals, or headhunters as they are called, know about hidden postings. While they regularly source candidates, like you, they also seek retainer or contingency relationships with potential employers. Once employers post a listing, these professionals screen information from candidates to determine those who match. Most often, search professionals deal with management or executive-level candidates and opportunities or with very specialized fields. Directories of search professionals are easy to locate in a bookstore or library, so use them.

Broadcast letters are sent to many companies Metnion the company name early Show your understanding of the company These are good first efforts if you follow up

Broadcast letters are, by definition, distributed to many employers. Thus, they are less focused. Format may appear similar to other letters, and it is most important to have the company name appear prominently early. While less company-specific information is contained, you must still show readers that you know the organizations name and the nature of their business. Be aware that quantity of letters is not as crucial as the quality of content. Broadcast letters can be good first efforts and momentum builders, if you maintain appropriate expectations and follow up effectively.

Cold communications are self-initiated Use this format to be proactive in your search Reveal your knowledge of the company Tell the reader what kind of a job you want

Communications with potential employers are often self-initiated, or cold. When making cold contact, you are neither responding to a posting nor contacting someone at the advice of others. Youre being proactive in your job search and contacting companies to see if they have a position available that would fit your candidacy. With these letters, it is particularly important to reveal your knowledge of the company youre writing to and the kind of job youre looking for.
