A few words from the Principal...

Welcome to Term Two

Hello all and welcome back to school for Term 2. At assembly on Monday

morning we were very pleased to see almost every student in full school uniform

and happy to be back at school. We have had a very smooth start to the term with

students settling back into classes and learning.

Improving communication with the

Skoolbag App

The college is constantly exploring ways to

improve communication between school and

home. As a part of this process, last year, we

purchased a new mobile App that enables the

college to communicate directly with parents

via smart phones, IPads and Android Tablets.

Hopefully most of you have heard about the

new mobile App called ‘Skoolbag’ .

172 people have already downloaded the App

and the feedback has been very positive. To

download the free App you need to go into

the App Store and type in ‘skoolbag’ and

‘Myrtleford P12 College’ in to the search.

Please contact the college if you have any

problems or questions.

The Big Walk

The forecast rain for Easter

Saturday thankfully did not

eventuate. Over ninety people

(some from as far away as

Sydney) took part in the second

Annual ‘Big Walk’ to the top of

Mt Buffalo.

There was a lot of tired, but

satisfied looking people arriving

at the picnic area for a sausage

and home-made soup. The day

saw participants ranging from

six years old to people in their

seventies completing the 11km

stroll. Well done to everyone

who walked on the day. The

event promises to be even bigger

next year with many already

keen to commit to the 2016

climb.

Thank you to Jon Hansen and

Simon McEwen who drove

buses ferrying people down the

mountain, Peter Gunson for

cooking the BBQ and to Claire

Stock and Helen White for

cooking the delicious soup.

Thank you also to Michael

Dwyer, Sharon Antonello,

Mavis Jones, Belinda Gunson

and Trish Chisholm for helping

on the trail. A big thank you to

Bernadette Hays for many hours

spent organising such a great

fundraiser and community event.

Monday 20th April

It is on again! Students of Myrtleford P-12 College, St. Mary’s Primary

School and Marian College are invited to participate in the 2015 MART Ski

Program.

The program is open to all students of these schools from Year 2* and

up. All levels of skiing and snowboarding ability are catered for from

beginner to advanced. We provide race skill development in skiing and

snowboarding with groups split into ability and age levels. Groups are kept to

a manageable size to ensure quality training. (*Open to Year 2 under certain

conditions.)

The Program is based on eight day visits to Mt. Hotham. The program offers

morning skiing/boarding supervised by volunteer parents/teachers from

your schools. In 2015 we will have a special Primary School Program for

beginner skiers. Primary School beginner skiers will have three full days of

instruction in the Kids Klub at Big D before hitting the slopes either with

their parent or in supervised groups. This means that this year we are

working on more flexible arrangements for the supervision of our primary

school participants (where the one parent to one child ratio will be relaxed).

Program Dates for 2015

- Saturday 25th July

- Tuesday 28th July

- Saturday 1st August

- Thursday 6th August

- Tuesday 11th August

- Saturday 15th August

- Thursday 20th August

- Saturday 22nd of August

- Tuesday 18th August – (backup day)

We are hoping these changes will allow more students to participate in this

fantastic program. I look forward to seeing you at the meeting on the 20th.

If you have any questions

before the meeting please

contact me at school.

House Debate Report

March 25 2015

Page 3

Issue 5: 17th April 2015

In the last week of last term the

whole school took part in our

annual debate. The topic this

year involved each house

debating that their chosen film

style or genre was the best.

Ovens had Sci-fi, Barwidgee had

Comedy and Buffalo had Action.

Many of the primary students

dressed up as their favourite

film character and their

participation in this way made

for a colourful and excited

audience.

The speakers were adjudicated

by Mrs Gardiner, Ms Sella, Chloe

Sinnett, and Year 6 School

Captains Josh Sinnett and Isis

De Bertoli.

During the breaks in the debate

the comperes Lucy Anderson and

Lara Selzer handed out twenty-

four awards to students who had

achieved great academic results

or contributed in a positive

manner to the school in Term 1.

Everyone spoke brilliantly and

the school congratulates all the

students who stepped out of

their comfort zone and spoke in

front of the whole school.

Buffalo

Won the

House

Debate!

In the end there can be only

one winner.

This year the winning team

was Buffalo who convinced

the adjudicators that their

genre of Action was indeed

the best film genre of the

t h r e e o n d e b a t e .

Congratulations to Alex,

Clare, Briana and their non-

speaking team helper Isaac.

Jo Milford

The debaters for each

house team were:

Buffalo - Alex Sella-

Bonacci, Clare Usher, Briana

Hines and Isaac Black. They

were assisted by their

staff mentor Ms Roso.

Barwidgee- Megan Ahne,

Molly Mckibbin, Miaka

Barratt-Hassett and their

staff mentor Ms Barron

Ovens- Tom Scott, Georgia

Milford, Ryan Crisp and Sam

Forbes and their staff

mentor Mr Tyson

Many thanks also to Kath

Reilly who provided all the

technical support to the

teams.

6L Story Writing We decided to mix things up a bit in writing last term. Each student wrote the first sentence of a story in their Writing Books and then they had to pass their book to the person next to them. Each student then read their neighbour’s sentence and then wrote their own to continue the story. After their sentence was added the book was again passed on to the next person. This process continued for about 20 passes until everyone had a complete story in their Writing Books. The main criteria was to make sure the story flowed and maintained cohesion. I think the students did a good job (even though unicorns, Gollum and a guy called, ‘Jeff’ featured very highly) You can read the stories here :

This term in Grade 2O’D students are studying

In the last week of Term I the VCE Art students travelled to Melbourne to see one of the current

exhibitions: Start Up: Top Arts 2015

This exhibition presents outstanding work by students who have completed Art or Studio Arts

studies in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), providing insight into young people’s

ideas, thinking and creative practices. Along with seeing the finished works, we had the

opportunity of looking through the workbooks before attending a lecture, with a valuable question

and answer session, giving students further insights into how to achieve outstanding VCE results.

This exhibition is on display until 28 June and well worth the visit if you are in Melbourne in the

next few months. These student works are inspirational, mature and challenging in the

explorations of gender, mental illness and the environment. The exhibit is at The Ian Potter

Centre: NGV Australia at Federation Square, with free entry.

We also viewed two contemporary and contextual shows at an independent gallery called

‘Blindside’, with the exhibited works challenging the viewer with the artist’s explorations of

feminism. Viewing of these exhibitions will assist the students in being prepared to write more

authentically about exhibitions in their end of year exam.

Some of the works can also be seen on the NGV website: http://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/exhibition/

Welcome to Term 2! Another exciting term planned with fun Art

adventures!

This term, Prep students will continue exploring the basic elements of

Art including shape, pattern, texture and space.

During Term 1, students across Years 2-5 were surveyed regarding their

cultural heritage, experience and interest. The results have been used to

inform planning for Art this term, which will focus upon studying different

cultural art forms, including Indigenous Art. Below are some images of Year

2 creating an Aboriginal inspired snake artwork.

I also wish to congratulate students from Years 3 to 5 on their ‘All About

Me’ presentations. Many students planned and created a thoughtful Art

Project. Well done! Mrs Ladeane Lindsay

During the last week of Term 1, Myrtleford P12 had two very successful rounds of competition in Albury and Wodonga. The Ovens and Mitta District received a large number of entries for Volleyball in all age categories, and Myrtleford was no exception, entering nine teams across Years 7 – 12. Congratulations to the Junior (Year 7) Boys Team and the Senior (Years 11 – 12) Team who both qualified to play in the Hume Region Championships. The Senior boys will travel to Albury on Tuesday 5th May to battle it out for the chance to play in the State Championships. The Year

7’s will do the same later in the year. Term 2 continues to be a busy time with school sport. In addition to the College Cross Country and Athletics Carnival, students will have the opportunity to represent the College in many sporting disciplines including: O&M Cross Country Beechworth O&M Senior AFL Wodonga O&M Junior Boys and Girls Netball Albury /Wodonga O&M Badminton Albury / Wodonga O&M Soccer Albury / Wodonga Hume Region Senior Boys Netball Wangaratta

Students are reminded to sign up promptly once they are notified of team nominations, and to also return their consent forms in a timely manner. This assists staff greatly with booking buses and allows us to accurately forecast the number of teams so that entries can be made correctly and on time. Thank you to all students so far this year who have contributed to school sport, either as a player or in an officials role. We look forward to another great term of fun and success at these events. 7-12 Student Leadership – Community Involvement

On Thursday 26th March seven students from the Myrtleford P-12 College 7-12 Student

Leadership group (Samantha Forbes, Briana Hines, Amy Rogers, Matthew Gunson, Kane Rounds,

Cherie Selzer and I) and a group of students from Marian College, participated in a youth

consultation with a representative from the Alpine Shire and two representatives from a design

company in Melbourne, on the Alpine Better Places Project .

Alpine Better Places is an exciting urban design project underway for Porepunkah, Myrtleford and

Bright. The aim of the Alpine Better Places Project is for town centres to be enhanced to make

them safer, more vibrant and better connected.

Initially there was information provided about the range of projects being considered for

Myrtleford. Students were then each given three stickers which were marked 1, 2 & 3 to represent

the student’s individual opinion on the priority of projects. Students were then asked to place their

stickers (Number 1 being their highest priority) on a Project Map which had all the possible

projects visually displayed.

Once all the students had placed their stickers on the map, the council took

the map back to their office to write up a report on what various group

(including students from Myrtleford P-12 College and Marian College)

thought were the most important projects.

It was a very informative day and very exciting to see the many concepts

that could be turned into real improvements to make our town better than

ever. It was great to see the Leadership Team asking some great questions

and really helping to make a difference in our community.

We couldn’t have chosen a better Autumn day to hold the annual MP12 Years 7 – 12 Cross

Country Run. The course, approximately 4km in length, departed MP12 College and took students on a

journey of the Show Grounds, Speedway and Rodeo Arena, before returning back to school. Ryan Crisp (Year11) again dominated the event, completing the round trip in just over

thirteen minutes. Sam Morgan (Year 11) and Will Quirk (Year 9) completed the podium

finishes for the boys with second and third respectively. The girls overall winner was Emilie McPherson (Year 9), who led the field the entire race.

Cassie Morgan (Year 9) placed second, and Cherie Selzer (Year 7) third. Thank you to all students who participated in the event and enjoyed the sunshine, and to

Cheese & Vegemite Scrolls (makes ~16)

2 sheets puff pastry, thawed Vegemite

1 cup grated cheese 1 egg, beaten (optional)

Preheat oven to 220°C. Line tray with baking paper. Spread Vegemite on pastry sheets and sprinkle over the cheese. Carefully roll up each sheet of pastry and cut into ~8 equal portions - the easiest way to do this is cut each roll in half, then half again and half again. Place scrolls cut-side up on baking tray with some space to spread. Optional - brush scroll tops with beaten egg. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden. Cool on wire rack for 5 minutes before serving hot. For lunch boxes, the scrolls can be made in advance and frozen. They will thaw before recess and are tasty unheated. This is definitely a recipe that can be adapted with different fillings to suit your tastes. Thanks to Claire Stock for this easy to use recipe. Rosemary Bunge
