Reason:

To allow onboard charging of the fixed crew oxygen bottle in the nose compartment.

Description:

This mod1ficat1on adds a remote fill valve which 1s installed adJacent to the crew oxygen bottle. A short length of copper tubing connects 1t to the refill port at the bottle head. Therefore, oxygen leaks are reduced and the oxygen bottle does not need to be removed for refilling anymore.

Approval:

Approval of this E.O has been done in accordance with VHB 03-09-03.

On operaters own discretion.

Manpower:

Solution:

Adjust position of P/N C21604-1 bracket to achieve one of the following:

A. Pick up existing tooling hole and use as attachment point for bracket.

or

B. Ensure a minimum of 0.125 inch of material will exist between edge of tooling hole and edge of AN3 bolt clearance hole before drilling.

SECTION 1 - GENERAL

1.0 APPLICABILITY

These installation instructions are applicable to all de Havilland DHC-8-100/200/300/400 SERIES aircraft.

1.1 ITEMS SUPPLIED IN KIT

All items called out on installation drawing C21601 are included in the installation kit. Refer to Appendix A of this instruction for a complete 11st of items for the installation kit and check kit contents against list.

1.2 INSTALLER FURNISHED ITEMS

Certain items required for the Crew Oxygen Servicing System (COSS) installation are not supplied in the C21631-3 kit as they are considered to be "consumables" or "shop supplies". These items are:

a) Chemical conversion material MIL-C-81706 (Alodine 1200), for touch-up of exposed aluminum.

b) Epoxy primer MIL-P-23377, for touch-up of drilled holes in aluminum.

c) MS20470AD4 rivets.

1.3 DOCUMENTATION

The following should be carried out:

a) Amend aircraft weight and balance in accordance with data in MOS C21600.

b) Complete certification documents as required by local airworthiness authorities.

1.4 PREPARATION OF AIRCRAFT

Before starting to install the COSS kit, certain actions need to be taken for reasons of safety, protection of the aircraft and to provide access. Proceed as follows:

a) Make aircraft safe for oxygen system maintenance. Reference Dash 8 Maintenance Manual chapter 12-10-35.

b) Gain access to the RH side of the nose compartment by opening the lower nose compartment access panel 112AR (refer to Dash 8 Maintenance Manual chapter 6).

NOTE: Cylinder ON/OFF selection is a function of the cylinder pressure reducer assembly. Removing supply line (2) from the reducer shuts off oxygen flow from the cylinder (see Figure 1.01).

c) Remove lines (2), (4) and (3) from pressure reducer (see Figure 1.01).

d) Remove clamps (5) and remove cylinder (1) from aircraft. Plug lines (2), (4) and (3) (see Figure 1.01 ).

SECTION 2 - MODIFICATION INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

2.0 SCOPE

This section describes the following activities:

a) Installation of the remote fill valve tube assembly (PIN C21603-1) b) Installation of the remote fill valve (PIN 26884-39 (Scott)). c) Installation of the remote fill valve support bracket (PIN C21604-1 ).

2.1 INSTALLATION OF REMOTE FILL VALVE TUBE ASSEMBLY

a) Install PIN C21606-3 bracket on the existing crew oxygen cylinder cradle bracket as per view A and section D-D on drawing C21601.

b) Transfer two No. 30 holes to the crew oxygen cylinder cradle bracket locate from existing .098 diameter holes on PIN C21606-3 bracket. Deburr hole, retouch protective finish and install PIN C21606-3 bracket with two MS20470AD4 rivets as per view A and section D-D on drawing C21601.

c) Locate the existing wiring harness cushion support bracket two frames aft of the crew oxygen cylinder cradle bracket, remove the existing fastener, refer to view A and section B-B on drawing C21601.

d) Orientate PIN C21603-1 tube assembly as per drawing C21601. Secure C21603-1 tube assembly to the C21606-3 bracket with kit supplied MS21919WDG3 cushion clamp, AN3-4A bolts, and NAS1149F0332 washer. Secure the C21603-1 tube assembly to the existing wiring harness support bracket with kit supplied MS21919WDG3 cushion clamp, AN3-13A bolt, NAS1149F0332 washer, and NAS43HT3-48 spacer refer to section B-B and section D-D on drawing C21601.

e) Locate bracket PIN C21606-1 from PIN C21603-1 tube assembly as per section D-D of drawing C21601. Transfer two No. 30 holes to the frame from existing .098 diameter holes on bracket PIN C21606-1. Deburr hole, retouch protective finish and install bracket PIN C21606-1 with two MS20470AD4 rivets as per section D-D on drawing C21601.

f) Locate bracket PIN C21606-1 from PIN C21603-1 tube assembly on frame as per section C-C of drawing C21601. Deburr hole, retouch protective finish and install bracket PIN C21606-1 with two MS20470AD4 rivets as per section C-C on drawing C21601.

g) Secure tube assembly PIN C21603-1 to each of the C21606-1 brackets with kit supplied AN3-4A bolt, NAS1149F0332 washer, and MS21919WDG3 cushion clamp, refer to sections B-B and D-D on drawing C21601.

2.2 INSTALLATION OF REMOTE FILL VALVE SUPPORT BRACKET AND SCOTT FILL VALVE

a) Centralize bracket P/N C21604-1 between frames and as shown on view A and section D-D on drawing C21601. Transfer four No. 10 clearance holes from bracket to the crew oxygen cylinder cradle bracket, refer to view A and section D-D on drawing C21601. Deburr holes, retouch protective finish.

b) Install Fill Valve PIN 26884-39 onto the C21604-1 bracket with three kit supplied MS35207-263 screws, and three NAS 1149F0332 washers, refer to section D-D on drawing C21601.

c) Secure bracket PIN C21604-1 to the crew oxygen cylinder cradle bracket with four AN3-4A bolts, and four NAS1149F0332 washers in accordance with section D-D on drawing C21601.

d) Connect tube assembly PIN C21603-1 to the remote fill valve PIN 26884-39 In accordance with section D-D on drawing C21601. Tighten tube assembly to a maximum of 30 - 40 inch - lb.

SECTION 3 - POST COSS INSTALLATION PROCEDURES

3.0 SCOPE

This section details the following procedures:

a) The installation of the crew oxygen cylinder. b) The connection of the COSS system to the crew oxygen cylinder. c) Crew oxygen system testing and purging.

3.1 INSTALLATION CREW OXYGEN CYLINDER

a) Position cylinder In nose compartment and secure with clamps (5), refer to figure 1.01 on page 1.03.

NOTE: THE CREW OXYGEN CYLINDER MUST BE PURGED AND RE-FILLED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE DASH 8 MAINTENANCE MANUAL SECTION 12-10-35, IF THE CYLINDER PRESSURE WAS REDUCED TO LESS THAN 25 PSIG FOR A PERIOD GREATER THAN 2 HOURS.

3.2 CONNECTION OF COSS SYSTEM TO CREW OXYGEN CYLINDER

a) Remove dust cap from the crew oxygen cylinder fill check valve and return to stores, refer to view B on figure 1.01, page 1.03.

b) Connect tube assembly PIN C21603-1 to the crew oxygen cylinder fill check valve In accordance with section B-B on drawing C21601. Tighten tube assembly to a maximum of 30 - 40 inch - lb.

3.3 CREW OXYGEN SYSTEM TESTING AND PURGING

a) Perform crew oxygen system flushing, purging in accordance with Dash 8 Maintenance Manual chapter 35-10-00.

b) Perform crew oxygen system operational test In accordance with Dash 8 Maintenance Manual chapter 35-10-00.

To inform Dash 8 operators of the existence of a Crew Oxygen Remote Fill modification.

1.1 APPLICABILITY

All DeHavilland DHC-8-100, -200, -300 and -400 aircraft with standard 39 cu.ft. crew oxygen bottle installation.

1.2 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

a) Service Experience

The existing crew oxygen system contains two features which have been I\ identified as causing service difficulties. They are:

1. A copper tubing installation which includes several threaded connections. (The copper tubing installation connects the crew oxygen bottle to a mechanical repeater pressure gauge on the flight deck.)

2. A refill valve on the bottle that faces away from the nose compartment access door.

The above features result in excessive oxygen consumption due to leakage and to the expenditure of manpower in removing and installing bottles and correcting leaks in threaded connections.

b) Description of Modification

The NAI Crew Oxygen Remote Fill modification introduces a remote fill valve to the RH lower nose compartment. The valve is installed adjacent to the crew oxygen bottle and a short length of copper tubing connects it to the refill port at the bottle head.

This modification eliminates the need to remove crew oxtgen bottles for refilling which will greatly reduce the leakage occurrence rate.

A remote fill valve is mounted on a bracket attached to existing structure just below the crew oxygen bottle. Copper tubing connects the remote fill valve to the refill port at the bottle head.

Refilling the crew oxygen bottle is accomplished as follows:

FORWARD PRESSURE BULKHEAD

Open the RH lower access door, remove dust cap from remote fill valve, attach to oxygen source and refill per normal procedures.

1.5 SYSTEM COMPONENTS

The Crew Oxygen Remote Fill modification kit contains the following components: • Remote fill valve • Oxygen tubing and fittings • Mounting bracket kit

1.6 RELATED MODIFICATION

A Crew Oxygen Electronic Indicating System modification kit is also available from NAI. (Please refer to NAI Product Information Bulletin C442 for further details.)

Northern Aero Industries Ltd. (NAI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Aero Consulting Services Ltd., is a Transport Canada approved AWM 561 Manufacturer and AWM 573 AMO. NAI manufactures and distributes a variety of modification kits developed by ACS, including the Dash 8 Crew Oxygen Remote Fill Modification Kit.
