We’ve had a busy, often exciting, and sometimes challenging year here at Speaking of Dogs Rescue. Exciting news is that we are now a registered charity, with many thanks to our newly formed board of directors – Lindsay, Linda, Kim, Katie, and Lorraine!

Our Forever in Foster program continues to offer dogs with medical and other special

needs a loving and stable home for the remainder of their

days. Sadly, we lost a number of our cherished friends

this past year, but we stand tall, knowing they were very well cared for and enjoyed a high quality of life. They will live in our hearts forever.

We’ve also taken several new friends into our Forever in Foster program this year. We’re now providing homes for dogs like Annie and Misty, who both came to us at 12 years of age, un-spayed, and with malignant mammary tumours. We have since had the girls spayed and the tumours surgically removed, and they’re now living happily and comfortably in a loving foster home. We’re also giving Forever in Foster homes to dogs like senior boys Maxwell and Jessie, who need ongoing treatment to maintain good mobility and to treat chronic ear infections. Through fundraising events, the rescue continues to pay for the health care, grooming, and supplies for all of the dogs in our Forever in Foster program.

We’ve been exceptionally busy with our adoptable dogs too, getting them ready for adoption (medical and behavioural assessments) and then pairing each unique dog with the family who best suits the dog’s personality and lifestyle requirements.

feAtureD Dog: Hank is an active three-year-old, 40-pound boy who enjoys playing ball and is housetrained and great in the car. He is currently in a quiet adult home and has been fine with visitors who haven’t put pressure on him to engage.

Hank found himself in a shelter when his family thought he wasn’t coping well in their active home. He was very distressed in the shelter and was listed as “no other animals,” so it was a pleasant surprise when he easily blended in with the foster’s resident dogs. In fact, he became best buds with a foster sibling (who has since been adopted).

His foster mom suspects he had correction training, as he was initially shutting down during training. He is doing much better with reward-based training. Hank now has the basic commands under his leash and even completed a family obedience class.

Hank is not yet confident with strangers, and he can get aroused when he sees dogs on walks. He will likely not be a good candidate for dog parks. If you are interested in Handsome Hank, please contact us to discuss training options and how you will help turn him into the happy, confident dog we know he can be.

This is rarely an easy task, but thanks to our volunteer screeners and foster parents, we have matched our boys and girls with homes we can all be proud of.

Along with the “usual” grooming and vetting (spay/neuter surgeries, heartworm tests, microchipping, fecal and urine analyses, and vaccines), we had quite the year for “additional” vetting needs. We spared no expense looking after dogs who needed dentals (2016 is going down

as the Year of the Dentals!); hip, lung and abdominal x-rays; liver and heart ultrasounds; renal therapy; orthopedic surgeries; two heartworm positive cases; severe skin allergy treatments (off to the dermatologist!); arthritis management; and no less than three cystotomies (one poor dog had 20 stones in her bladder!).

Despite the hectic pace this past year, we managed to help over 150 dogs, each one as special as the next, and we’ve loved every minute of getting to know and love them all!

Happy howlidays and big thanks to our volunteers, foster parents, supporters, groomers, trainers, business owners, and veterinarians for always being there for our dogs and for never letting us down!

Please consider a year-end tax-deductible donation to our cause at speakingofdogs.com/donate/.

From our dogs to yours, have a warm, wonderful, and safe holiday season!

cAn You LenD A PAW?Although we have a partnership with a doggy daycare, we do not have a physical shelter; our dogs are in-home fostered by caring, loving volunteers. Because of the way our rescue is structured, the only hands-on volunteer position with our dogs is fostering. Can’t foster but want to help our dogs? Consider donating new or gently used items for them. We are always in need of
