business issues in level 5, to the level 6 which is designed to offer an integrated, holistic and independently managed learning experience, with an opportunity to examine and evaluate business and management problems and issues, through case studies and realistic work scenarios, supported by formal learning inputs and learner support activities. i.e. tutorials seminars and e-support. Levels 5 and 6 offer an opportunity to explore additional areas of learning through the option module choice.
Cognitive / Intellectual /Practical & Professional SkillsThroughout the programme students will be encouraged to develop and use a range of cognitive and intellectual skills. Many of the modules require the students to develop and apply a range of skills within a variety of learning and assessment related activities. Students will be encouraged to develop practical and professional skills and through formative and summative assessments modules will encourage students to explore and examine issues around theory and practice. Where appropriate assessments will be work-related or based on a case study scenario to encourage students to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Module assessments will incorporate elements appropriate for demonstrating and developing key transferable skills such as presentations, report writing, numbers and IT (plus a portfolio, if Placement used). Students will develop and be able to apply a range of relevant management skills including communication, business planning, leadership and mentoring and decision making. The Business Research and Project module will contain skills-based developmental sessions.
20. Key Assessment MethodsThe assessments will be designed to allow the development, application and evaluation of knowledge and understanding in a business context across the programme. Students will complete a major project within level 6 of the programme; this has been designed to further allow students to demonstrate a holistic understanding and application of knowledge in a chosen topic. Within this programme a range of key formative and summative assessment methods will be used. They will be designed to motivate, stimulate and inform learning and will include such assessment strategies as: case studies; simulations; essays; presentations; and, business reports and plans.
Knowledge and UnderstandingThe Assessments will include a range of assignments, case studies, simulations business reports and plans, designed to allow the development, application and evaluation of knowledge and understanding in a business context across the programme. In addition there will be a major project within the final level designed to ensure a holistic understanding and application in a chosen topic area.
Cognitive / Intellectual Skills/ Practical & ProfessionalThe assessment for many of the modules asks the students develop and apply a range of skills within the learning and assessment activities, both formative and summative, with at level 6 the opportunity to apply reflection based upon their work in order to assess whether they are effective. All assessments at all levels and especially the project at level 6 will require students to use a range of cognitive and intellectual skills which will be directly assessed. The Business Research and Project module project will be in the format of an in-depth study of an issue related to business and will be undertaken as an individual piece of work which requires learners to operate independently. Timely and effective feedback and assessments are integral to the learning process. Students will also be exposed to the nature and processes of seeking employment during year 2.

22. Programme Structure
Overview of structure of the modules across the Academic Year.
This programme is designed to offer a broad based study of the main areas of business but also to provide the opportunity to choose from a wide range of option areas.
In level 4 students take core modules which include the main functional areas of business, the external business environment and the development of personal and professional skills. Level 5 core modules include Enhancing Employability and a study of the European and wider international context of business. In level 6 students work on an extended piece of research in their Business Project and study Strategy Management. A range of options enables students to tailor the programme to their own interests or career aspirations. The programme is also available to part-time students in the evening, though the range of options available will be more limited, and the final level is available to HND and Foundation Degree students as a conversion degree.
The programme is also available to part-time students in the evening, though the range of options available will be more limited. Part-time delivery will follow the ‘block’ model identified. This will mean that the order and rate at which modules are studied will vary according to the time the student can commit to the programme. However, part time students will normally complete the Programme within 4/5 years. Part-time students can only participate in the level 4 module, Business Decision Making following the completion of the other five level 4 modules. This does not prevent students from studying a combination of modules from different levels and will not hold up student progress, practice that has been established over many years. Modules:

23. Support for Students and Their Learning
The level 4 induction programme helps students to make the transition into higher education and to feel part of the School and the programme. This includes a range of liaison meetings with the Programme Leader aimed at developing a relationship between staff and students and to explain relevant programme information included in Programme and Module handbooks.
Induction also takes place between each level of the programme to ensure students are aware of any special requirements or activities to their particular programme, eg Placement in level 5 and Project guidance in level 6.
A Student Support Officer (SSO) will provide generic support to students and will assist in ensuring the effective integration of students into the University and TUBS. The SSO will play an active part in induction events and will supervise Student Advisors / Mentors and will act as a point of contact for students who require non-academic assistance and advice.
8/tt/file_convert/5a72b50d7f8b9ac0538de7f6/document.doc
Level 4 will develop key academic skills and transferable skills to a standard which will prepare the student for success in subsequent assessments. Many of the academic skills and transferable skills are delivered by the Personal and Team Effectiveness module. Teaching on this module is focused in such a way that much of the input is towards the start of the module thereby providing the input for subsequent application in the formative and summative assessment.
A Personal Development Plan (PDP) will provide the vehicle for students to be able to reflect on their progress, to identify where their weaknesses and strengths are and to develop a plan of action for improvement. This will form part of the level 4 module Personal and Team Effectiveness.
The document ‘Learning to Achieve’ details the specific mechanisms in place for student support and highlights the TUBS approach to improving retention and progression for all students.
The School Disability Co-ordinator oversees the needs of students with special requirements.
The School Blackboard is used by staff to communicate with students, provide study material and to post notices. Students can access this information externally and is a crucial medium of support for part-time students.Lecturers use this system to support learning and teaching. The system facilitates communication between staff and students and can enable structured learning (web pages, presentations, lecture notes, announcements, assessment feedback, and podcasts). Blackboard is a web based system and therefore is available both on and off-site using the following address: https://eat.tees.ac.uk. Your username and password will be required to gain access to this secure area. For further information refer to the Information Technology Handbook.
The University Student Services and Careers Service provide central support for students with a range of financial, pastoral and career advice.
24. Distinctive Features
The BA (Hons) Business Management is a broad business programme with a flexible choice of options. The programme core is designed to enhance the student learning experience by focussing on the development of knowledge, skills and competencies throughout the programme.
The content of the common ‘core’ has been informed by the QAA subject benchmarks for general business and management degrees, i.e. the study of organisations, management, the external environment, and the enhancement of lifelong learning skills and personal/career development. Most TUBS undergraduate programmes utilise the same common core. Consequently flexibility is built into the programmes in that students have the opportunity to transfer to other business programmes at the end of level 4.
Level 4 of this programme provides students with a range of subjects to provide a broad knowledge base on which to build specialist knowledge and expertise in preparation for a wide variety of careers.
Throughout level 4 students will learn about the external environment (Business and the Economy), the key functional areas of business (Fundamentals of
9/tt/file_convert/5a72b50d7f8b9ac0538de7f6/document.doc
Marketing; Managing and Developing People; and Accounting & Information Systems), personal and team development (Personal and Team Effectiveness), and an integrative module (Business Decision Making) will draw together learning from all modules with an applied approach.
The final level 4 module, Business Decision Making, utilises a bespoke business simulation software package to enable students to engage with the discipline in an applied context.
Students will be exposed to the interrelationships and partnerships between theory and practice, researchers and businesses, initially through brief staff and guest presentations delivered in induction week and then followed up with staff and guest seminars throughout their study.
Personal and professional skills and competencies are developed systemically throughout the programme, especially the Personal & Team Effectiveness module in level 4, the Enhancing Employability module in level 5 right through to the Business related project in level 6. This programme offers students the opportunity to undertake a placement in an organisation or an international study year in between levels 5 and 6.
The intention of the programme is to give students exposure to ‘real world’ business situations in order to enhance their skills and employability. Providing students with the opportunities to learn from work/practical related experience is embedded throughout the programme and is an important aspect in helping students’ secure future employment. Real world experience is embedded in the programme in several ways including Guest seminars; Business simulation exercises; extensive use of real world case studies; ‘Live’ projects with local employers, industrial placements and through the project module. The real world relevance of the programme will also be stressed though research, the school’s engagement with professional bodies and through a business competition.
From the initial exposure to the role of research in level 4, students will develop research skills in levels 5 and 6. In the Business Research & Project module at level 6, students will apply their knowledge and skills to an individual business project. Students will normally use ‘live’ projects, where students work on real problems/issues identified by industry provides opportunities for the students to engage in inquiry based learning but is also particularly effective in bridging the gap between theory and practice.
Students will benefit from the School’s engagement with a range of professional bodies including Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), Chartered Management Institute (CMI), Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), and with local employers representatives on the School Advisory Board.
Students also have the opportunity to win sponsorship for the IBM Universities Business Challenge which is the premier business simulation competition for all university undergraduates in the UK.
One of the key challenges of management education is the development of management action skills, particularly leadership. Building on the Personal and Team Effectiveness module in level 4, modules to develop leadership, mentoring and employability skills are included in the level 5 stage of the programme, with a
10/tt/file_convert/5a72b50d7f8b9ac0538de7f6/document.doc
related reflective practice within the Business Research and Project module.
