We are currently in our sixth week of the 2014-2015 school year. I am very impressed with our staff and students. Small schools like ours are functioning well all across Oregon, and especially in the rural eastern area of the state. They enjoy high graduation rates; ours is nearly one hundred percent. Students in small schools excel in the classroom and in extra-curricular activities. They expect to be involved and suc- cessful. A high percentage attend post high school graduation training and/or college. A friend whose children attended a large high school observed that in their school there were generally three groups. One-third of the kids were nerds, scholars, or fine arts oriented. Another third, boys & girls, were ‘jocks’, first and foremost. The last third, sadly enough, were often neither and many were ‘dropping though the cracks’. On another topic, Joanne and I attend the community celebration at the Adrian City Park on Saturday. It was a lot of fun and my heartfelt ‘Thank – you’ is extended to Dennis Dougherty and Carl Hill for bringing this attractive venue to our community. Our fall athletic teams are doing well. I hope to see you at the kid’s activities. We will have several home games in October here in Adrian. Also, remember to always take care of where you are, and those who are there with you. Respectfully yours, Gene Mills A note to parents: As we pass the halfway point of the first quarter, you should have received the mid-term report cards. We would like to thank everyone who attended Rachel’s Challenge on Wednesday, September 17th. This was a great program and we hope to implement the message that kindness and compassion may start our own chain reaction. We would like to thank our sponsors: Erin Martin, Bowns Farms, WBF Farms, Simplot, Lifeways, Malheur County Sheriff’s Department, Joel & Vickie Price, Adrian Lion’s Club, Harper School, Daniel Livas (graduate of 2013), ASB, Class of 2011, and the Barraza Family for their assistance and support. We also wish to thank KTVB, Owyhee Avalanche, Malheur Enterprise, and the Argus Observer for their coverage of the event.

We have another large senior project event coming up called ‘Fatal Messages’, an assemble on the dangers of texting and driving. Everyone 12 years of age and older is invited to attend this program on October 8th.

Our First Report cards have gone out and we have survived our first six weeks of school. Our Glean Team has been active. FFA is active and going strong (we have the best FFA around), Inter-national Club is scraping together money for their Europe trip (donations appreciated), Juniors are trying to figure out where to get money for Prom; Leadership and ASB are planning a trip to their Annual OASC Conference in Seaside, Oregon; Advanced Biology just returned from Yellowstone (no one was mauled by a bear); Band is sounding great; a trip to Washington D.C during spring break in being planned; and of course our Fall Sports are doing well!!!

Homecoming is fast approaching during the week of October 17th against Jordan Valley, we hope to see you there.

Thank you, Adrian High School ASB Erin Nielson-ASB Reporter

Wow, six weeks into the school year and the calendar fills up fast. If you are a parent of a child who is actively involved in the events going on in and out of school, you know what I am talking about. Foot-ball, volleyball, FFA, The Glean Team and International Club are just a handful of the things going on to keep the kids (and parents) busy! Throw in the junior high activities and I can only guess that you have in-stalled a revolving door and buffet style eating at your house as well. The varsity football and volleyball teams are off to solid starts and opened up league play this week. FFA will host the Soil Judging competition on October 1st. The Glean Team has been busy gathering potatoes and onions from local fields and donating the produce to local citizens as well as other schools in the High Desert League. A big “thank you” goes out to the local farmers for their generosity and to Mrs. Chamberlain for taking the lead with the gleaners. Homecoming will soon be here, so be sure to mark your calendars. The parade and pep assembly will be held during the afternoon of October 17

th. That evening we will hold the annual Powder Puff football

game. I know that the students and teachers (sort of J) are looking forward to the week’s festivities.

The Forster Care Christmas Drive is quickly approaching. If you would like

to support a foster kid, donations start at $50 to $60. Please contact

Stephanie Allison or Rochelle Figueroa at (541) 372 – 2335.

I believe that until you have a senior student living in your home, you cannot truly appreciate how busy they are or the amount of mail they now receive! I have been in education for nearly 25 years and I know that I haven’t fully realized how busy they can be. If you are a parent of a senior, you really need to be encourag-ing your child to stay on top of their work. There are many deadlines to be aware of: SAT and ACT tests, early application deadlines for colleges, scholarship deadlines and even Senior Project deadlines! Math 30 seconds

The first mathematical process listed in the Oregon Common Core State Standards for Mathematics is: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Basically this means that a proficient math student at any level can determine a good starting point for solving the problem based on the givens and constraints associated with the problem and then work to a successful conclusion overcoming all obsta-cles. They think about possible problem solving processes and try to determine the most promising method of solution before jumping into the problem. This may involve sketching diagrams or graphs, developing equations, using physical and/or electronic aids, describing the problem in their own words, or making a simpler problem to solve. Once a possible solution is found the proficient student will try to determine whether the proposed solu-tion makes sense in the context of the original problem and will consider different successful approach-es to the problem in an attempt to determine the simplest approach that leads to the proper conclusion. “Run the Race for Reading” was a huge success. I

would like to thank all the participants who came out and ran and supported my senior project. I

would also like to thank my classmates and my advisors for helping me pre-

pare for the run. Another

thanks goes to Coca-Cola for donating water and to Sugar

and Spice Bakery for making the donuts. We had 104

runners sign up which made the day a huge success. All

the funds raised went to the

new reading curriculum for Adrian Elementary.

Thanks again, Chase Walker.

Members of the Adrian FFA and Adrian student body have been out and about in local fields lately. Students have been gleaning onions and potatoes to give away to community members as well as other schools in the area. To date, 2,075 pounds of red and yellow onions have been collected as well as 3,800 pounds of russet potatoes. The Glean Team is typically an annual project at Adrian High School and this year, the FFA chapter officers and their advisor agreed to head up the gleaning efforts. This project is a great community service for students and for those who receive the free produce. This year contributing farmers include WBH Farms, Jake Speelmon of Rivercrest Farms and Brent Ishida of Giant Produce.

The Adrian FFA chapter held their 2nd

Annual Back-to School Movie Night on the football field. There were over 75 people that came out to watch “Back to the Future” on the big screen. An enormous thank you to Mrs. VanCorbach and Mr. Johnson for allowing the FFA use of their technologies to show and hear the movie! It was a great night with perfect weather and fun was had by all! The Adrian FFA will be hosting a Thirty-One Tailgate Fundraising party on Friday, October 17

th in the Ag

Room from 3:00- 7:00 pm. Thirty-One is a national company that features numerous styles of bags, purses

and office organizing supplies in a variety of functions. Items will be available to purchase that night or

customers can place catalogue orders. A local 31 business representative will be on hand to demonstrate

the merchandise and to take orders. Please come to the Homecoming games and show your support for

the FFA by perusing the merchandise in your free time! It’s never too early to start your holiday shopping!!

Cafeteria Scoop

As summer fades and fall begins we find ourselves wondering when the snow will fly, if at all. With cooler temperatures, the cafeteria has planned a warm menu to help fuel our students and staff. October 13th-18th is National School Lunch Week. What is National School Lunch Week? NSLW is an annual celebration of the National School Lunch Program. NSLW was established by John F. Kennedy in 1962. The purpose of this event is to provide the opportunity to highlight the important, positive role of school lunch nationwide. The 2014 NSLW theme is, “Get in the Game with School Lunch.” It’s about encouraging kids to find a balance be-tween healthy eating and physical activity. Studies show that students with healthy eating habits have higher test scores, better attendance, improved concentration, fewer discipline referrals and greater overall achievement. School lunches help expose kids to a variety of healthy foods and are safe and affordable. Nearly 32 million kids across the nation participate in the school lunch program. Applications are available, for free and reduced lunch and free breakfast, in the Elementary or High school office. It is important to fill out this form and return it to the school so that children who qualify can receive free or reduced lunch prices. The Oregon legislature provided funding to eliminate the reduced price payment for School Breakfast. For the school year 2014/15, breakfast will be accessible at no charge to students who qualify for reduced price meals. The application is easy to fill out and is completely CONFIDENTIAL. If you have any questions please contact Darla Witty at 541-372-2335.

Happy Fall!

The start of this year has been great. Our student numbers last year were 168. This year it is at 188. That is an increase of 20 students. These are quality students with a lot to offer. Adrian has a reputation of having the highest scores in Malheur County.

The Rachel’s challenge program was very suc-cessful. Our students are working on doing something good for others. This goes well with our model: Enter to learn, Learn to work, Work to serve. I don’t know who said it, “Perhaps the ten most important two-letter words ever put together: If It Is To Be, It Is Up To Me.” Our students are learning good principles. Thank you for your support. Sincerely, William H. Ellsworth

Adrian School District #61 Condensed Board of Directors Meeting Minutes

August 14, 2014 Members present were: Paul Shenk, Neil Allison, Jake Speelmon, and Ryan Martin.

Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 8:00 p.m. by Board Chairman, Ryan Martin. The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag.

Adopt Agenda Motion was made and was seconded to adopt the agenda as presented. Motion carried unanimously. Student Reports/Requests Sundee Speelmon, Student Body Representative, reported that high school registration was held August 12

th, the Sports Rehab. Authority were at the school in Adrian to do sport physicals,

the first day of school is August 18th, the Student Body Officers will meet the new students of the first day of

school and assist them with finding their way around. She shared copies of the football and volleyball schedules and noted that October 17

th is homecoming. The FFA has been busy with chapter activities and the Malheur

County Fair. Elementary Principal Report Mr. Ellsworth reported that there have been 21 new students enroll in the elementary/middle school. The staff is preparing for their new teaching assignments and the 6-8

th grade staff

meeting went well. High School Principal Report Mr. Purnell reported that there are 81 students registered at the high school. There are eight foreign exchange students, six in the dorm and two with host families, one returning international student and seven new students. Superintendent Report Mr. Mills reported that he had attended the county school superintendent’s meeting last week. There is a county wide professional development day for teachers on October 3

rd. Matt Hawley is on the

OSAA Executive Board and he updated the superintendents on the changes in the RPI system. Mr. Mills reported on the busing, we have an open bus driver position so Mr. Gordon is driving both morning and evening, and there is a small full-size bus doing the Willowcreek route this year. Financial Report Darla Witty reported that the auditors were on site July 22-24, 2014. The auditor will be recommending some adjusting entries; one or two of these will result in budget violations. One of the entries is due to the new phone system lease being treated as an operating lease instead of a capital lease. The other one, he is researching and may be recommending, would be that the Qualified School Construction Bond debt service fund, newly created in 2013-14, was started with a beginning balance instead of a transfer into the fund. Both of these result in expenditures being reclassified to places that there is insufficient budget authority to cover the corrected transactions. All in all, the audit visit went well. Darla Witty reported that the district will float the cost of the construction project and secure a loan later in the fiscal year if the district decides to pursue in that direction once the district has a better picture of the financial picture for the year.

Public Comment Stephanie Allison invited the board members to attend the Rachel’s Challenge community assembly on September 17, 2014, at the High School.

Consent Agenda Motion was made and was seconded to adopt the July 10, 2014 school board minutes as presented and to approve payment of the bills as listed in the amount of $300,229.19. Motion carried unanimously.

Action Items Request for Leave of Absence Kelly Tolman is requesting a leave of absence due to health reasons. Mr. Mills recommended the board grant Mr. Tolman a leave of absence until his health allows him to return to work if the district has an open position for which Mr. Tolman would qualify. The board asked for clarification that Mr. Tolman would not be able to bump another staff member to return to work. Mr. Mills reiterated that there would need to be an opening and Mr. Tolman would need to be qualified to teach the subject. Offer Teacher Contract Mr. Purnell reported that there were three applicants for the English teacher position. Two were interviewed. Mr. Purnell is recommending Tammy Blanchard for the position. Motion was made and was seconded to offer a teaching contract to Tammy Blanchard. Motion carried unanimously. Weight Room Use Procedures Mr. Purnell has drafted guidelines for non-school use of the weight room, which include completing a facility use form, a liability waiver, and weight room user agreement. Motion was made and was seconded to approve the weight room guidelines as presented. Motion carried unanimously.
