From the beginning the systems were based on: Tone frequency Relay based remote control

and later all systems were based on digital/computer technology The operation of the systems were based on: buttons and later on mouse clicking, keyboard and a few touch on touch screen technology

TMS FOR THE FUTURE

Supervision and planning of traffic operations Centralized traffic control Timetable planning and simulation Passenger information Train description Train recording Ensuring traffic operations under irregular conditions, technical failure/malfunctions and severe weather conditions

Further development of TMS-system…presenting further functions for the operator…

All these different HMI were more or less based on the systems capability and not developed for optimised functionalities for the operator including a better overview and as few operations as possible

To operate and monitor the traffic the operator has to look at many different subsystems and shift/change between them: CTC showing different kind of screen pictures:

To secure safe and continu-ously information from the trains it`s necessary to use

GPS-data Radio Block Centre data

Exact position and update the trains position on the network Able to show different categories of trains with different colours and thickness of the train´s line

On the Train Graph, you can show the track layout of each station and the entire line. Also at each station, you can show all the corresponding trains and connections. The colour of the train´s line could show the present state of the train: A black, yellow, red and green line indicating the status of the train

All the trains’ timetable information can be hidden or shown on each train line depending on the request from the operator. Or you can use a specific screen shot showing the trains 'status

To help the operator further it shall be possible to have access – from each station – on the Train Graph - to a full track layout of each station simply be clicking on it: Full track layout of the entire line Occupancy of the tracks How long each track is free or occupied How long is sections of the line free or occupied The exact position of each train on the line or at the station All the line or more lines if needed Define a series of trains for different lines or sections of lines Indicate various kinds of traction, diesel, steam and electric

TMS FOR THE FUTURE

To be able to control and operate the system the following new functions should be implemented:

Changing adjusting present trains timetable by graphical manipulation including setting up a new train number by Pop-up menu’s Put in a new train using the mouse by indicating/clicking on the beginning- and end station of the new train and a possibility to input further data of the new train Move a train´s timetable using the Train Graph

Setting up several Train Graphs with different lines on the same work place Using zoom and panning Make screen dumps of all types of Train Graph, past, present and future Setting up a Train Graph must only take max. 2 sec. Possibility of integrating other systems and subsystems in the Train Graph

Access to showing a stations´ entire track lay out, number of route tracks, their length plus additional information which could be the length of the platforms all the included other technical systems and sub systems Access to a stations track occupations diagram (where and when)

Access to a junction station showing all connection trains (arrival and departure time) and the necessary time to change train / platform conditioned by the stations layout Change or move a locked route using a graphical editor by double clicking on the train number allowing the locked route to be shown graphically

Then the cursor is moved to the wanted track and clicking allowing the route to be changed and shown on the monitor In order to secure the requested change a double click on the new route has to be set in due time

Last but not least, a graphical presentation gives the operator a better overview regarding conflicts and how to solve them…. The system shall offer the operator solutions and their consequences but not the final decision which is made by the operator It´s possible to define conflicts in the system and how to solve them

Through manipulation of the time-distance graph lines, directly in the user interface, the time-table and the track usage can be re-planned whenever the traffic planner finds this appropriate. When the traffic plans are without conflicts they can be automatically executed.

More new functionalities

TMS FOR THE FUTURE Conclusions/Assumptions

Learning and training/education: It´s my belief that this can shorten the time it takes for traffic controllers to become skilled in their profession

The new interfaces contribute to: improved quality in train traffic control Better possibilities to plan and solve conflicts in time To strive for more optimal solutions

NEW APPROACH FOR EXISTING TMS-SYSTEM

In OCC where the traffic is run automatically and everything is according to the plans why should the operator monitor the system? Let the operator focus on more diversified tasks than merely monitor the system and the traffic and let the system warn him/her in case of irregularities or disruptions of the traffic Implement a Night Panel function / Dark function

The possibility to “Darken”/ “Night Panel” the monitors and in case of a disruption, the TMS-system will be able to manage the following steps: If something is malfunctioning, the object(s) will be highlighted and an alarm is set of on the monitors showing which object it is: The operator can then choose and have access to further information about the malfunction:

Night Panel function/ Dark function 1

NEW APPROACH FOR EXISTING TMS-SYSTEM

The system can show the operator more information about:

Signal(s), Point(s), Route setting and release Train describer system Level crossings Station, Two adjacent stations, the monitored line All the net work(s)

Night Panel function detects signal A at Dronningmølle station showing Danger and alerts the operator

He/she operates the system and ask for more info including info about the station The system reveals why signal A is showing Danger (the sat route fra signal D to signal B2 and overlap to signal A)
