For more than 15 years, it has been my extreme pleasure to serve the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation (MKAF), a champion of cultural

arts and education in Northwest Florida. Since 1995, MKAF has a rich history of bringing art enrichment programs and cul-tural experiences to audiences of all ages.

I salute all my partners who have trav-eled along on this exciting cultural journey … staff member Deb Nissley, the leader-ship of all MKAF’s board of directors, members, donors, media partners and volunteers.

I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize my parents and mentors who first opened my eyes to a world of art. At a young im-pressionable age, I was afforded the oppor-tunity to experience piano, tap and ballet lessons; to see live theater on Broadway; be inspired by the New York City Ballet; to visit metropolitan fine art museums at the New York Metropolitan of Art and The J. Paul Getty Museum and Villa; and be mes-merized by The Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall.

I am often asked what motivates me and I always say, “I can’t image life with-out arts and culture and not introducing children to the same opportunities that were given to me.” Through the power of

art, we can enrich the community through cultivation, presentation and preserva-tion of cultural opportunities. Whether it’s painting one’s surroundings, collaborat-ing to create a song, writing a novel or a screenplay, or working as a team to act out a play, many forms of the arts are the essence of bringing economic impact, quality of life and a sense of place to any community.

My passion and personal “ministry” is to surround myself with talented artists, mentors and visionaries to carry on Mattie’s dream of a community rich in culture. It is especially important that we begin by unlocking a child’s poten-tial through the power of art to provide a pathway of growth, development and self-esteem.

You can play your part by joining our arts family — become a member, volunteer your time and talent, or provide services that are needed to be a champion of cultur-al arts. Remember, the arts are for every-one, not just the fortunate or the privileged.

Inspiringly,

Marcia HullCEOMattie Kelly Arts Foundation

T he Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation (MKAF) proudly welcomes Destin

artist Robin Cannon as the 2014 Festival of the Arts poster winner. Selected by a panel of judges, her winning design becomes the official signature art-work featured on the com-memorative festival posters and merchandise, including postcards, the festival guide and the overall promotional festival campaign.

Cannon’s vibrant and playful acrylic painting cen-ters on an art festival dotted

with colorful tents capped with flying flags flanked by musical instruments and paintbrushes. Cannon, a mixed media folk artist who describes her work as “fun and funky,” has showcased her artwork in the festival for the past two years, but she is a first-time poster contest winner this year. “The festival is just magi-cal and to win the poster contest is a total thrill,” she said.

“We’re delighted the judg-es chose Robin Cannon’s piece,” said MKAF CEO Marcia Hull. “Her whimsical

work has personality plus, just like she does. This piece really captures the sense of celebration we try to create at the festival each year.”

Cannon was born in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and grew up in the Atlanta area, but she has lived in Destin since 1989. After rais-ing her four children, she began devoting more time to creating art, which she has done full-time for the past seven years. Under the name Redbird Art, Cannon

repurposes discarded wood, metal and other found objects into lively, animated mosaic-style paintings and folksy art pieces, many featuring whimsical birds that have become somewhat of a sig-nature. Cannon’s colorful art can be found at Artesano’s in Fort Walton Beach and Flutterby Antique’s in Des-tin, as well as at local art shows, art walks and festi-vals. Visit Robin in Booth #75 to learn more about her technique.

A stunning 20-foot contemporary metal sculpture designed by artist Frank Ledbetter welcomes guests into the Village.

LIVE ENTERTAINMENT

DUGAS PAVILION

A fine art festival isn’t complete without live enter-tainment to make the event a multi-cultural experience. Live entertainment, spon-sored by Destin Commons, will include six talented musi-cal acts performing a variety of genres, including jazz, blues, contemporary, soul, R&B, Latin and tropical music. See entertainment lineup on page 14-1.

PLEIN AIR PAINTERS

In the mid-19th century, working in natural light be-came particularly important to the Barbizon School and Impressionism. En plein air

is a French expression mean-ing “in the open air” used to describe the act of painting outdoors. The popularity of painting en plein air increased in the 1870s with the introduc-tion of paints in tubes. Visit the Plein Air Painters in Booth #16 featuring several local artists, Judy Dewar, Lynette Meisen, Ed Nickerson, Marian Pacsuta and Beckie Perrott.

THE ART OF DINING

savory seafood from 790 On The Gulf, trademark burgers from Tucker Duke’s, tacos from The Big Red Truck and barbecue from Jim N’ Nicks along with tasty sweet treats by Rosey’s Kettle Corn, Swell Pops and Deep South Sno Treats, among others. Foodies can toast the arts with select domestic and imported wine and craft beers in the Wine Bar & Beer Garden. Dine al-fresco style and enjoy live mu-sic from the Dugas Pavilion.

K adri Kaerma, 54, is one of the most known and recognized con-

temporary ceramists in Es-tonia. With exhibits in Japan, France, Germany, Sweden and Finland, her work is known well beyond the borders of her home country. And now she is exhibiting for the first time at the Festival of the Arts as a special featured artist.

“It’s an absolute thrill for us to welcome Kadri Kaerma to show in the 2014 festival,” said MKAF Festival co-producer Deb Nissley. “Her vibrant, inventive work will add that much more artistic depth to our already stellar ceramic lineup.”

Kaerma wonders if being born under the sign of Pisces is perhaps why fish-motifs have been prevalent in her work throughout her nearly 30-year career. Kaerma’s highly personal and imaginative style

set her apart from traditional contemporaries. Adventurous in her use of color, Kaerma’s abstract ceramic designs are unconventional and are described as being filled with both “humor” and the “unexpected.”

A 1985 graduate of the Es-tonian Art Academy, Kaerma began her art career at the Ceramic Art Center in Tallinn, Estonia. Just 10 years later she became the general artist of the company, and in 2009, she established her own ce-ramic studio under the brand name Vibalik.

In 2013 she was invited to place select pieces on exhibit in Tokyo and in Kyoto. Kaer-ma’s work recently was one of 150 chosen out of 3,500 to show in the Mino International cera-mists’ exhibition.

Kaerma is married and has two sons. She lives in Nõmme, Tallinn in Estonia, which is a “sister city” to Destin.

MKAF is the catalyst as the only nonprofit organization

in our area with a program concept like All Kinds of Art (AKA) to encompass all of the fine and performing arts.

AKA, endorsed by the Florida Department of Edu-cation with the Commission-er’s Business Recognition Award, has inspired more than 265,000 K-12 children since 1995 in more than 57 schools in Okaloosa and Wal-ton counties in Northwest Florida.

AKA works with profes-sional artists, teaching art-ists, art special-ists, classroom teachers, and administrators from schools, art mentoring partners and local art alli-ance partners to deliver an innovative and stimulating quality arts expe-rience as an essential part of every child’s K-12 education.

AKA arts alliance partners include the Okaloosa and Walton County School Dis-tricts, Emerald Coast Autism Center, Atlantic Coast The-atre, Emerald Coast Theatre Company, The Repertory Theatre in Seaside, Sinfo-nia Gulf Coast, Northwest

Florida Symphony Orchestra, Northwest Florida Ballet, and George Rodrigue Foundation for the Arts.

Through two new partner-ships with Emerald Coast Au-tism Center and the United Way of Okaloosa and Walton Counties, AKA is funding valuable quarterly outreach programs to at-risk children with physical and mental disabilities or low-income

students in government re-duced-lunch program, many of whom come from single-parent households. The arts provide an invaluable avenue of self-expression for special needs children with limited or no verbal communication, and because of heightened sensory needs, they respond well to the multi-sensory stimulation and the hands-on approach inherent in art.

State and national studies have proven that arts-infused and arts-integrated curricu-lum can instill an attitude of lifelong learning in K-12 students, prevent substance abuse and gang activities, improve attendance and achieve higher academic scoring and graduation rates. Schools that produced the highest academic achieve-ment in the United States are investing 20 to 30 percent of the day on the arts. That is NOT the case in Okaloosa and Walton counties, where students are exposed to only 20-30 minutes weekly or in some cases, once every two weeks.

The Festival of the Arts requires the support

of more than 100 community volunteers. MKAF

recognizes the value of our volunteers as the

lifeblood of our organization. Our motto “It Takes

A Village – Join Our Arts Family” is not only to

become a member but how community members

can get involved and be a part of your local arts

organization.

THANK YOU TO OUR FESTIVAL

VOLUNTEERS –

YOU ARE ALL A HERO!

Kathy Whidden2014 Festival Volunteer Chair
