A tourist attraction for Haiti
Russell Pelle, originator & Executive Director
The January 12, 2010 earthquake that struck Haiti was one of the worst natural disasters humanity has suffered. Port-au-Prince and other areas were devastated. 300,000 were buried in mass graves.
Those who perished in the earthquake should be honored.
Haiti must be rebuilt.
Reconstruction will require removal of millions of tons of debris.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
A monument worthy of those who perished in this merciless earthquake could be constructed using debris cleared from areas devastated by the earthquake.
The monument should be built at the site of the unmarked mass grave.
In addition to honoring those who lost their lives in the earthquake, such a memorial could benefit the Haitian people as a tourist attraction.
At the summit, a large, flat open area with an eternal flame. A wide stairway, aligned with the sun every January 12, would ascend to the top. At the top of the stairway, a rainbow arch
of colored glass would be set aglow by the rays of the setting sun. The area around the pyramid would be a large botanical garden of Haitian flora – a forest with hiking trails – an ecological park.
We propose the monument take the form of a terraced pyramid.
This debris could be used to build a pyramid of tremendous size.
This is a low tech, labor intensive project, which could employ thousands of workers for years.
.
An estimated 33,000,000 metric tons of debris must be cleared to make reconstruction possible.
Honor those who perished

Russell Pelle, Executive Director and Roland Wasembeck, Treasurer, spent March 26 – April 3, 2011 in Haiti. Our main objectives in this week long visit to Haiti were to test reaction to the idea – which was very positive – develop our network of supporters . . .
.
We examined our proposed site which we discovered was ideal for the pyramid . . .
