ECPPS is pleased and excited to announce our book col-lection campaign to provide books for Pre-K through 5th grade students to take home and read during the summer. ECPPS will hold our Summer Book Bonanza (formerly Give Five-Read Five) through May 15th. The ECPPS Summer Book Bonanza is in support of NC Reads, a new statewide read-ing initiative.

Book donations may be dropped off at any ECPPS school as well as the ECPPS Administrative Offices, 1200 Halstead Blvd.

We encourage the community to join us in providing books for our students as we work together to advance literacy for our children...as literacy is a key to lifelong success.

Sheep-Harney Supports March of DimesSheep Harney Elementary School wanted to find a way for students and staff to “give back” and to become involved in a project where they can make a difference for others. Principal Waples, along with Mrs. Fran Worthington, media coordinator, led the challenge for the students and staff to collect coins during March in support of March of Dimes. They presented a check to March of Dimes for $1085.38; however, they ended up donating additional funds as their total collection increased to $1189.00.

Central Elementary 1st Graders Operate to Learn ContractionsElizabeth Leary’s first grade students have been learning contractions and she turned her classroom into a surgical center to help them better understand which letters to remove from the words.

Students wore gloves, face masks, and shower caps as they performed surgery on various words, creating contractions. What a creative way to engage students in the classroom!

Speedway to Healthy Visits WeeksvilleHealthy Carolinians of the Albemarle, Albemarle Regional Health Services and Pasquotank County Cooperative Extension, sponsored the Speedway to Healthy exhibit at Weeksville Elementary School April 4th through April 6th. Speedway to Healthy is a 1,200-square-foot, walk-through exhibit representing the human body. This creative educational exhib-it teaches children in kindergarten through fifth (K-5) grades how the foods they eat affect their bodies and their health. Speedway to Healthy is a

project of 4-H Youth Development of The Cooperative Extension Program, a division of the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at N.C. A&T State University.

During the exhibit students race through the exhibit in groups of eight to ten stopping at various “pit stops” where a volunteer educator engages children in a five-minute activity that focuses on healthy lifestyle choices and understanding the impact those behaviors have on the body. The exhibit experi-ence begins at the starting-line pit stop where children are given a food identification sticker and taught the MyPlate model. After the starting-line session, the children (acting as pieces of food) proceed to the brain, the next pit stop on the Speedway to Healthy. There they learn how the brain functions and what they can do to keep it healthy.

When the children leave the brain, they enter the mouth to learn proper brushing and flossing. They are then swallowed through the esophagus and land in the stomach. From the stomach they land in the small intestine where they enact being squeezed in small pieces as the nutrients they possess escape into the blood stream to be delivered throughout the body. Next, the children travel the path of the nutrients to the remaining pit stops: heart, lungs, kidney, bones, muscles and skin. Children exit the exhibit from the skin pit stop, via a cut in the skin.

Childhood obesity is a widespread issue in the state and the nation. The Speedway to Healthy project was created as a resource to fight childhood obesity and poor health among children in North Carolina.

More information on the Speedway to Healthy is available at: http://www.ncat.edu/caes/cooperativeex-tension/Programs/4HYD/speedway/index.html

River Road Middle School was awarded the Windows of Opportunity Grant for a greenhouse project in the amount of $1487.40 through NC Beautiful. NC Beautiful has been supporting awareness, education and beauti-fication efforts in North Carolina for over 40 years. The project is being coordinated by Ms. Candace Lavra and is providing opportunities for students in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th grade to gain hands on experience with planting and maintaining a variety of plants. The green-house project has been a collaborative effort with many community volunteers as well.
