Mbarouk is from the village of Mangapwani and Aida fell in love with the village at first site. They began building their home here in 2002 with the idea that they would eventually build a school. The NGO was officially established in 2006, but they began teaching classes where ever and when ever possible in 2002. In 2007 they finally moved into their home and invited people from the community in to study. Classes were held in every room except their kitchen and bedroom. Around that same time they began fundraising efforts to build an all purpose classroom. Friends and businesses were solicited to donate 50,000 Shillings (40U$) to help build the classroom and in return their name or business became a permanent part of the building as a sponsor. The classroom was put to use in 2007, though not yet complete. The main house then became the computer center, although electricity came much later. Through a good friend Brenda Moot they were connected to the Marlie in Paradise Foundation, who became their most generous donor. MIP donated the money for the first four computers and the completion of the roof of the classroom. Local businesses, Zenith Travel and Tours and Stone Traders supplied the funds to complete the floor and walls in the classroom and provide teaching materials for students. FUNDING To date the NGO has survived on donations and sponsorship from individuals who visit the site, friends and family from America, local businesses who sponsor programming and the fees that volunteers pay for room and board. Fundraising events are held annually for special projects and Aida and Mbarouk continue to work outside to support themselves and the NGO. For the following two years volunteers would be housed in the main house, the rooms which are now Aidas studio and Mbarouks office. In 2009, MIP agreed to sponsor the building of a volunteer house. Funds generated through its occupancy would be used to sustain the NGO and hire a permanent staff of former students of CSRS.
