Introduction Papua New Guinea can seem to be a daunting place to conduct

business for those who are unfamiliar with the culture. Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that the country operates on so-called Melanesian Time. What this means is that punctuality is not of the utmost importance, and lateness is not necessarily considered rude. In addition, last-minute invites to dinner parties or other meetings are not uncommon.

In terms of communication, individuals can speak directly about general topics, but criticism is typically delivered secondhand through a colleague to spare any embarrassment. Businesspeople should not be afraid of general chatting, as this is a key way of demonstrating interest.

Papua New Guinea When meeting someone for the first time, a

handshake is customary. In subsequent meetings, a nod of acknowledgement or brief handshake is encouraged. Sometimes, people may take the hand and hold it against their chest as a sign of respect.

Business dress should be conservative. However, due to the heat, attire can be practical and casual. Women are expected to wear light dresses or short-sleeved suits, and men typically wear slacks with open-necked, short-sleeved shirts.
