A BEACON OF HOPE:

NASHI’S MAPLE LEAF CENTRE IN UKRAINE Together with our girls at the Maple Leaf Centre, NASHI thanks you for being part of the MLC project in Ukraine that our girls now call home. Our girls are thrilled to have a home where they are now thriving. Where there was once despair, there is now hope and joy.

The bond is very apparent with hugs to daily arrivals of staff, director and for us as visitors. We were so welcomed by all. Jaynne Carr Edmonton, AB

A very special experience that exposed us to both the most beautiful and positive aspects of Western Ukraine, and one of it’s darkest challenges. But the love and care that the MLC provides is a beacon of light and support. Darcy Tkachuk Whitehorse, Yukon

The volunteers had a seminar where we learned of our girls’ tragic lives before the MLC. Often we were brought to tears. These girls have come from extreme pov-erty or poorly operated orphanages. All were suffering from malnutrition. They would have faced a future lacking in education and would have struggled just to survive. NASHI is preparing to set up an educational fund where we will be sup-porting these girls in whatever post secondary education they will choose. This is NASHI in ACTION and this is what makes our project UNIQUE.

NASHI EVENTS HELD

UGLY TRUTH SEMINAR IN YORKTON

NASHI in partnership with the Society for the Involvement of

Good Neighbours (SIGN) and the Saskatchewan Aboriginal

Women’s Circle Corp (SAWCC) hosted the Ugly Truth Forum:

Human Trafficking Workshop in Yorkton on June 22, 2017. Joy

Smith spoke to the global and national perspective, Canadian

legislation and how young people can be lured into human traf-

ficking. Betti Lawrence, NASHI, spoke to what Human traffick-

ing is and the work of NASHI. Bev Harvey, a survivor, related her

own experience of being trafficked. Judy Hughes, SAWCC out-

lined their purpose and activities and the work being done to

investigate the Missing Women in Canada. Bruce Fenske, RCMP

gave an overview of human trafficking in Saskatchewan and rein-

forced that it is happening in our province and in the Yorkton

area. A Future Action Plan handout was provided for each partici-

pant as their commitment to end Human Trafficking.

PEROGY PARADISE – March 12, 2017

Bev Gregory and Karen McKenzie annually contribute their

amazing quilt to the Perogy Paradise fundraiser. The success of

this event is due to so many donors of auction items as well as all

the attendees. GREAT EVENT!

VOLUNTEERS TO UKRAINE

In June, 19 volunteers from across Canada packed oversized,

overstuffed, overweight suitcases and headed into Ukraine. We

all had a great time and learned even more.

MEET OLHA

Joy Jarrett from Swift Current wrote:

A journey begins with a choice. The first I heard about the work of

NASHI was just a few months ago. I watched the Youtube video

One Perogy at a Time and soon appreciated the focus, passion and

purpose of this group. I then made the choice to join the NASHI

learning volunteer tour.

Our time at the MLC was informative as we listened to stories of

young lives affected by circumstances out of their control. We saw

first hand what compassion, love, hugs and improved nutrition

can do to help repair broken lives.

Although I began with no knowledge of the Ukrainian language,

somehow we communicated. Somehow we connected. Somehow

we understood. The language of the heart speaks louder than

words.

My choice to begin this journey has made me part of the NASHI

family. Contributing what we each choose as we return home. We

will make a difference.

Olha’s sister Anastasia came to

the MLC 6 months ago. Their

mother was not able to care for

her 2 girls. Maria, our director,

learned of this tragedy and

soon Anastasia was a perma-

nent resident of the MLC. She

cried at night realizing her

younger sister Olha could not

care for herself. Our staff

worked diligently and on

Anastasia’s birthday, Olha also

became a permanent resident

of the MLC. The reunion was

amazing as they ran into each

others arms. The staff and the

other girls could not keep tears

back.

Olha is 6 years old and had not

been let out of her apartment

for 2 years. She has a speech

problem now being addressed.

She is a delightful girl and is

beginning to blossom.

We see videos and pictures of the girls at the safehouse. But reality sets in when you are greeted by these girls and cannot stop hugging them. You start to think where these girls would be without the safehouse. When the girls call the safehouse ‘home’ then you know in your heart we are doing the right thing and will continue to help.

The most memorable experience in Ukraine was meeting the girls at the Maple

Leaf Centre. Rescued from squalor and other abnormal conditions, it was deep-

ly moving to see each uniquely special girl blossoming and thriving under the

professional and loving care of the Director Maria and her staff. From a bleak

future involving human trafficking potential, the girls, aged 6-14 are now

blessed with a bright and happy future that beckons with opportunity for re-

warding years ahead.

Jeannette Townsend – Valemount, B.C.

My journey is now complete as I had an opportunity to visit the

fully functioning safehouse and was blessed to be able to interact

with all the courageous girls. I am so proud of NASHI and the

work we have done!”

Teresa Petrowski, Saskatoon
