The Quran has signs within the Ayahs or at the end of the Ayah to indicate whether one
should pause, stop, or continue reading. These signs are called “Signs of Waqf” and today’s
lesson is all about rules of Waqf.
InSha’Allah, we will cover the rules of stopping, either at an end of an Ayah or in the middle of
an Ayah as well as learning about the meaning of the different signs as given in both the
Uthmani Script and the Indo-Pak Script.
Sometimes we have to stop in the middle of an Ayah and it is important to know how to read
the word that you are stopping on.
1. Categories of Waqf
2. How to read a word when we stop on it
3. Signs of Waqf (letters and symbols)
77
Waqf means “to stop”. There can be many reasons when a reciter may need to stop during
recitation. For example, stopping in accordance with the rules given in the Quran, stopping when an
explanation is being given by a teacher, stopping during a recitation / memorizing test, or due to
other reasons (shortness of breath, sneezing, coughing, forgetting, etc. etc.).
There are 4 categories of (optional) stopping:
a) Waqf Taam – اواقف اتام - This is known as the “Complete Stop”
b) Waqf Kaafi – اواقف الكافي - This is known as the “Sufficient Stop”
c) Waqf Hassan - اواقف الح - This is known as the “Good Stop”
d) Waqf Qabeeh - اواقف اقح - This is known as the “Disliked Stop”
88
Rule:Best to stop. Continue with the next word.
Explanation:The meaning is complete and there is no connection between the current Ayah and the next Ayah in terms of grammar or meaning.
ام ت ا واقف ا Complete Stop
It is You we worship and You we ask for help.
Sovereign of the Day of Recompense.
99
لكافي واقف ا ا Sufficient Stop
Rule:Advisable to stop. Continue with the next word.
Explanation:The meaning is complete however there is a connection between the current Ayah and the next Ayah in terms of meaning but not in terms of grammar.
Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them,
And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith].
1010
واقف الح ا Good Stop
Rule:Good to stop but cannot start with the next word. Continue by going back one, two, or more words, depending on the Ayah. If you stop at the end of an Ayah, then you can start with the next Ayah.
Explanation:
The wording is complete however, there is a connection in terms of grammar and meaning with what follows it.
Who believe in the unseen, and establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them,
1111
ق ا واقف حا Disliked Stop
Rule:Stopping is not normally allowed but one can stop if necessary to do so. Continue by going back one, two, or more words, depending on the meaning of the Ayah.
Explanation:
The wording is NOT complete and stopping here gives an incorrect meaning.
O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated 4:43

• If the last letter of the word has a Fathah, Kasrah, or Dhammah, then change the vowel sign of the last letter to a Sukoon.
• If the last letter of the word has a Kasrah Tanween or Dhammah Tanween, then change the vowel sign of the last letter to a Sukoon.
• If the last letter of the word has a Fathah Tanween, then change the Fathah Tanween to a single Fathah and add keep the Madd letter Alif (2 Counts – Madd-e-Iwad).
When pausing or stopping on a word
1313
• If the last letter of the word is a Ta Marbootah (closed ta), with a Fathah, Kasrah, Dhammah, Fathatain,
Kasratain, or Dhammatain, then change the Ta Marbootah to the letter Ha with a Sukoon.
When pausing or stopping on a word
• If the last letter of the word has a Shaddah with a vowel sign, then change only the vowel sign o the
last letter to a Sukoon and apply the rules of Shaddah.
1414
• If the last letter of the word is the letter Hamza with a Fathah, Kasrah, Dhammah, Kasratain, or
Dhammatain, then change the vowel sign on the last letter (Hamza) to a Sukoon.
When pausing or stopping on a word
• If the last letter of the word is the letter Hamza with a Fathatain, then change the Fathatain to a
single Fathah and read it with the Madd letter Alif.

When pausing or stopping on a word
• Some more examples are given below:
• There are some words that are read the same whether we stop on them or continue.

These are known as Al-Mu’aanaqah or the ‘Embracing Stop’.
The rule is that you stop at one or the other, but not on both.
2222
The word “Noon Qutni” is associated with the small letter Noon seen in the Indo-Pak script of the
Qur’an as shown in the following examples:
The rule is that when there is a Hamzatul Wasl coming after a Tanween (Fathatain, Kasratain, or
Dhammatain), then one of the vowel signs of the Tanween is replaced with a Noon with Kasrah
and this is used to join it with the next word.
2323
In this example, the word نواح نواح is read like this: نواح and the letter after the Hamzatul
Wasl also has a Sukoon. In Arabic, two Sukoons cannot be read so the rule of small Noon is applied.
The Hamzatul Wasl is dropped and the Noon, with a Kasrah, is joined with the letter after the
Hamzatul Wasl.
