Medical MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Dear All,

This month we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of our Medical School with numerous activities culminating in 3 days of lectures, speeches, social events, campus walks and mainly remembering the founders and recognizing our achievements at McMaster. Here are a few highlights.

It started with a screening of “The Gender Lady: The Fabulous Dr. May Cohen”, a documentary on Dr. Cohen’s fight to raise awareness of gender issues in medical schools and the role of women’s doctors throughout the health sector. She joined McMaster in 1977 and is a member of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame and an Officer of the Order of Canada. To remind you, in the first cohort of medical students in the fall of 1969, there were 18 men and 2 women compared to 99 men and 106 women in our graduating class of 2016.

I also want to mention the excellent Osteoporosis Essentials course which took place on Saturday, October 25th, organized by Dr. Aliya Khan, a clinical professor of medicine at McMaster, director of the calcium disorder clinic and an internationally recognized expert in bone density and osteoporosis. Our own Dr. Hema Choudur gave an excellent lecture and I strongly invite you to attend the next one in 2 years.

Monday, November 11th is Remembrance Day. Let us not forget those who gave their life fighting to defend our values and freedom.

Visiting Professor series…

Dr. George Taylor Boston Children’s Hospital

Professor of Radiology (Emeritus) Harvard Medical School Boston, Massachusetts It has been two years that McMaster Children’s Hospital launched its Pediatric Imaging

Service. To celebrate this achievement, the Pediatric Radiologists welcomed Visiting Professor, Dr. George Taylor, on October 22nd and 23rd.

On the first day of lectures, Dr. Taylor presented Radiology Misses and Burnout. Radiology Misses discussed:

The role of heuristics in diagnostic errors,

Understand the cognitive and perceptual contributions in diagnostic error

Identify situations that are high-risk for diagnostic error

The Radiology residents also participated in Hot Seat cases with Dr. Stein and Dr. Taylor.

Burnout discussion:

Understand the components of burnout

Understand the risk factors in burnout

Understand strategies in mitigation of burnout in radiology

The second day of lectures, Dr. Taylor began the morning presenting CT Radition:

Review the dose reduction strategies available in pediatric CT

Understand the interplay between beam energy (kVp) and photon flux (mA) in pediatric CT

Understand the differences between population and individual risk of malignancy following CT radiation exposure

Following the morning lecture, Dr. Taylor participated in the Radiology Residents half day. Discussions included Controversies in Pediatric Appendicitis, Advanced Cranial Sonography and Neonatal Surgical Abdomen.

In Memoriam

It is with heavy hearts that we’d like to share, Summer Leon Velarde, a respected colleague, mentor and friend to many at HGH, passed away on October 1st, 2019. For 4 years, despite what the disease

dealt to her, she pushed on and carried on fighting.

In our thoughts are her husband, Dan, and her two daughters, Emma (age 8) and Charlie (age 5).

Summer’s over 15 years at HGH were filled with many roles; student, working in the film library, CEL, and Xray technologist. She was a vibrant, kind, and outgoing addition to our department and will be

sorely missed by everyone.

In memory of our dear friend please “enjoy a cup of coffee with a friend”.

November is Code Purple (Hostage) & Silver (Active Shooter) Month

HHS building satellite staff are to review and follow their building-specific Emergency Response Quick Reference

Guides

The HHS Code Response Plans for these codes and related resources can be found online on the EDM intranet site:

Code Purple Webpage

and

Code Silver Webpage

Remember:

If you come across an unfolding Hostage Situation, do not engage with the hostage takers or begin negotiating. Dial x5555, report the incident, and wait for police in a safe area.

Patient beds or stretchers make fantastic door blocks when hiding during a Code Silver incident. Simply remove any person from the bed, move the bed directly in front of the door, and lock in position. Move yourself and all others away from the door.

For November, all staff & affiliates are responsible to…

All staff should complete a review of both Code Purple and Code Silver, including “what if…” scenarios for your area and watch one of the short online videos (click here)

Complete the online Monthly Fire Drill Review Quiz (click here) and participate in a monthly fire drill if on-site

On completion of the above, ensure you notify your Area Code Captain to include your name in the online Code Review Report for completion of both the Code of the Month review and Fire Drill by the end of the month

EXERCISE, EXERCISE, EXERCISE!

A Code Silver Drill will be scheduled at each of the HHS sites in November. The goal is to ensure staff at all sites know what to do on overhead notification of a Code Silver i.e. how to rapidly get to a hiding place and how to barricade and secure a unit. Details will be provided outlining details and expectation s for drill activities for all areas.

Units and departments that wish to have an additional workshop or in-service on Code Purple or Silver can contact the Emergency and Disaster Management Specialist to arrange.

Code Captains… Please ensure any staff who may submit an online code review report for a code review or fire drill know how to do so

Managers & Directors... Ensure your areas have a Code Captain, or fulfill this role until one is identified. Notify [email protected] if any changes are needed to the online reporting template for your program areas. Please do not edit the template yourself.

If you have any questions or suggestions for improvements for the next code version or code review, please contact [email protected]

RESEARCH CORNER

On October 23rd, Dr. David Koff and I attended the Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) Research Fair which medical students were encouraged to attend. The fair involved researchers and research centres from a number of faculties presenting their work in an effort to promote the projects that they are currently working on. It was very encouraging to see the interest that the medical students, in particular the first year students, have in research. During the entire duration of the fair we had a large number of students gather around the Department of Radiology booth, asking questions and enquiring as to how they can get involved. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me ([email protected]) if you would like to have a student working with you. The students had a diverse skill set including having done segmentation, programming, and previous work in radiology. These medical students are very eager and looking for some experience working in radiology research! On another note, if you are interested in learning more about research yourself, a new exciting course is being offered through the McMaster Continuing Centre – The Fundamentals of Health Research Methodology (HRM). This 10 week, online course, is geared to improve your knowledge of health research methodology and acquire the fundamental skills necessary to successfully initiate, carry out, and complete a research study. The Fundamentals of HRM course can provide you with the opportunity to connect with health professionals across a variety of disciplines in your field. You will earn a certificate upon completion of the course. For more information or to register for this course, please visit the following site: https://www.mcmastercce.ca/health-research . ~ Jane Castelli

November 11 – Remembrance Day

DID YOU KNOW?

The Tricho system, was an award-winning innovation made by Dr. Albert Geyser to remove unwanted facial hair using radiation in the early 1900’s. Installed in beauty shops across the country for $400 bucks each, the Tricho directed x-rays at women’s cheeks, lips and chins and targeted young women. It would be taken off the market around WWII after case studies emerged noting ulcers, carcinomas, and death!

Hello Everyone, November is a month to remember and be grateful for all of those who sacrificed their lives for us; take a moment of silence on November 11th to pay tribute to those who fought for our freedom as Canadians. LEST WE FORGET ~ Tori

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.
