Language Arts at Henry Sibley

Sibley and the State of Minnesota require students to pass 4 years of Language Arts.

There are 2 options for ninth graders. General Language Arts & Advanced Language Arts.

The majority of students will enroll in General Language Art. The course work includes analytical thinking, grammar, vocabulary, and literary terms applied to various genre including short stories, poetry, novels including Of Mice and Men and To Kill a Mockingbird plus a Shakespearian play, Romeo and Juliet. Emphasis is placed on writing with the goal of passing the Minnesota State Written Composition in the spring of freshman year.

Students who enroll in Advanced Language Arts must meet the following criteria: read at or above grade level, have an B in Middle School English, have their 8th grade teacher recommendation, be motivated, be an independent worker and be willing to complete daily homework. The most challenging novel will be Great Expectations.

Students successfully passing 9th grade will move on to American Literature as 10th graders, World Literature as 11th graders and Comparative Literature in 12 grade. Different levels are offered at each of the grades.

Students who fail both semesters of English 9 will be registered to repeat the 9th grade English class during their sophomore year.

Students must pass all four years of English classes in order to receive the necessary credits for graduation. Students who are successful have a high rate of homework completion. Students who are unsuccessful usually have failed to complete homework on a regular basis.
