Dear Parishioners,

In today's 2nd

reading, St Paul deals with one of his greatest worries, an issue that he wrote about more frequently than almost any other: the problem of disunity. The importance Paul gives to unity in the Church comes across clearly in his first lines. He urgently begs the Philippians to be "of the same mind... united in heart," and he does by appealing to all those things that are most holy: Christ, love, the Holy Spirit, and mercy. If we all are walking at Christ's side, how can we clash with each other? If we are all filled with the same Holy Spirit, how can we allow divisions to break up our fami-lies and church communities? If we are all as committed to mercy - forgiving others as God has for-given us - how can we allow grudges, jealousy, and envy to poison our hearts and words? St Paul truly believed what Jesus had said at the Last Supper, that by our love for one another the world will come to know and love Jesus Christ. Disunity was a threat to the ancient Church in Philippi, and it is a threat to our Church in today's world.

Just think how much more good the Church could do if every Catholic in the world the rich and the poor, the powerful and the weak, the high-profile and the low-profile, held firmly to all that the Church holds dear. Divisions inside the Church have weakened the Catholic voice, giving free reign to so many social evils and opening the door to the culture of death. If today we reflect more deeply on what St Paul identifies as two main causes of disunity, each one of us can be better armed to be builders of unity in the Church. The first cause of divisions and disunity is selfish ambition. St Paul writes, "do nothing out of selfish-ness." The Greek word for selfishness is eritheia. It refers to the kind of unhealthy ambition that leads us to lie, cheat, and compromise in order to climb the ladder of success. When Catholic pro-fessors openly support Gay Pride week at their college campus because they are afraid that their colleagues will ostracize them if they don't, even though they know that the Church teaches that ho-mosexual activity is destructive to the happiness of individuals and of society, they become a source of confusion and division for the Church. When Catholic politicians support abortion, euthanasia, or cloning in order to climb the ranks of party leadership, even when the Church clearly teaches that those practices destroy human lives, and undermine society's moral fiber, they are a source of scan-dal and division for the Church.

When Catholic businessmen go along with immoral investments or shady accounting practices in order to win the favor of their bosses, even though the Church teaches that justice demands honesty and integrity, they become a walking contradiction, creating confusion and division in the Church. St Paul told us to have the same attitude in life that Christ had, and that means we should be ambitious not for ourselves, but for the truth. That's what Christ did, and so that's what Christians should do, and that's what will make our Church a volcano of grace and salvation for this fallen world. Disunity was a threat to the Church two thousand years ago, and it is a threat to the Church today. Thanks be to God, we don't have to depend only on our weak human efforts to resist it.

Jesus has provided unconquerable weapons that all of us can use to protect and build up the unity of the Church. First, the papacy. One of the differences between Catholic Christians and non-Catholic Christians is that Catholics can know clearly whenever their pastor is wrong about Church issues - all they have to do is look at the Catechism. Jesus has guaranteed that his Church, through the teaching authority of the popes and the bishops united with them, will always give sure and de-pendable teaching on issues of faith and morality. We don't have to argue each other into the ground; we can build together on the solid, common ground of true Catholic doctrine.

Second, the Eucharist. It is not enough to accept Church teaching and be of one mind, St Paul told us; we also must live out that teaching by being of one heart. Through the Eucharist, Christ's own heart is united to each of our hearts, giving us his own divine strength and drawing us all closer and closer together into one spiritual family. Every time we prepare to receive this great gift in Holy Com-munion, let's renew our faith in the unity, the oneness, of Christ's Church, and let's promise him that we will do our very best never to damage that unity, but always to build it up.

St. Jerome Catholic School says “Here we are Family”. We see this to be true as generations of families attend and support the school. People are drawn to this school and parish community, coming back to worship, work, volunteer, and send the next generation of children to St. Je-rome Catholic School. One family that has truly exemplified this spirit of generational support and participation in the school is the Bruegging/Krus family. The Bruegging children and many of the Bruegging and Krus grandchildren attended St. Jerome Catholic School. Jeanette Bruegging volun-teered as a parent during the early years of the school, worked in a variety of positions for many years, and is now volunteering and substituting at the school. We will be eternally grateful for Jeanette and Pat Bruegging and their support and faith in this school. Today, Janna Bruegging Krus, is a member of the St. Jerome Catholic School staff. An employ-ee for 17 years, Janna grew up in this parish and attended St. Jerome Catholic School. Janna serves as the School Aide and manages a varie-ty of tasks and duties each day. After 17 years working at the school, Mrs. Krus reflected on the biggest changes she has seen in education, and she notes that technology and virtual or video learning are the focus for many students and families. When asked what she loves about working at St Jerome, Mrs. Krus said that this school is family and everyone cares about each other. If Mrs. Krus is asked to step in to monitor or assist with a class her favorite classes to work with are the PE classes. Mrs. Krus enjoys being active, es-pecially in outdoor activities, including fishing and swimming with her children. Mrs. Krus is welcoming of everyone and says that if she can put a smile on one person's face a day then she has done her job. She models her joyful spirit for all faculty, staff, students, and par-ents.

CARTA DE PADRE DANIEL Estimados feligreses,

En la primera lectura de hoy, Isaías describe el mal uso y abuso del pueblo de Israel por parte de sus líderes como viñas ma-

duras para el cultivo y desatendidas. Los viñedos evocan imágenes de un cuidadoso cultivo por expertos viticultores con la

expectativa de buenas cosechas de vino. El Señor había preparado a Israel como una hermosa viña, y los líderes de Israel

como viticultores con todo lo que tenían a su disposición para que fueran fructíferos y exitosos. Lo que el Señor recibió en

cambio fueron uvas silvestres. Las uvas sin cultivo, dejadas para crecer o morir por casualidad, dependiendo del clima y otras

condiciones, no eran uvas muy buenas. Si algo bueno creció, no fue gracias a los viticultores, y lo que creció en una situación

tan desfavorable no valió mucho. Se esperaba que los líderes de Israel cultivaran la justicia y la paz en sus súbditos, y no lo

hicieron.

En la segunda lectura de hoy, San Pablo nos enseña que la paz de Dios y el refugio de nuestros corazones y mentes en Cris-

to dependen de nuestra actitud y de las cosas que valoramos como importantes. La envidia y la codicia pueden llevar a la

inacción, pero la ansiedad puede tener el mismo efecto. San Pablo nos aconseja en momentos de ansiedad pedirle a Dios lo

que necesitamos, pero con espíritu de gratitud por lo que el Señor ya ha hecho. Ese es el mejor remedio para un sentido de-

formado de derecho cuando las cosas no salen como nos gustaría. Nuestro Señor nos ha prometido que el Padre Celestial

sabe lo que necesitamos incluso antes de que se lo pidamos (Mateo 6: 8), por lo que no hay necesidad de preocuparse. Si

nos ocupamos de la verdad, el honor, la justicia, la pureza, la hermosura, la gracia y la excelencia, no solo experimentaremos

la paz de Dios, sino que ayudaremos a difundirla.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Nuestro Señor nos invita a imaginar a un grupo de hombres que tienen la oportunidad de su vida, tan-

to profesional como personalmente: no solo un buen lugar para vivir sino una excelente manera de ganarse la vida. Imagine

un negocio en una ubicación excelente, con una clientela abundante, un excelente contrato de arrendamiento y el trabajo de

hacer feliz a mucha gente. Si eso no fuera suficiente, los hombres que dirigen el negocio también tienen un hermoso lugar

para vivir y un gran propietario. Cualquier observador externo diría que profesional y personalmente el propietario ha sido muy

amable con sus inquilinos, incluso yendo más allá de lo que un inquilino esperaría o merecería. Todo lo que el propietario pide

a cambio es una parte de la alegría que esperaba que produjeran los inquilinos. Aquí es donde entra el misterio del pecado:

misterio en el sentido de pecado, en última instancia, sin seguir ninguna lógica más que la suya propia, una lógica retorcida

que dobla todo a su alrededor y niega verdades mayores eventualmente a sus expensas. Los inquilinos comienzan a golpear

a las personas que vienen a cobrar la parte justa del propietario y lo dejan con las manos vacías. No hay remordimiento: poco

a poco empiezan a matarlos también. El propietario muestra una amabilidad que los inquilinos, con cualquier observador ex-

terno, no merecen. Les sigue dando oportunidades hasta que un día les da la oportunidad más grande y definitiva: envía al

heredero él mismo, un recordatorio de que él es el dueño y ellos son los inquilinos, y una extensión de sí mismo. En su retor-

cida lógica, se convencen de que al eliminar al heredero cualquier rastro de propiedad morirá con el dueño, y él también deja-

rá de molestarlos (el hijo fue el último que pudo enviar, como narra la parábola). Los sumos sacerdotes, los escribas y los an-

cianos pronuncian un juicio sobre este caso "teórico", y sus propias palabras condenan lo que están haciendo. Nuestro Señor

es la piedra angular. Ni siquiera se puede hablar de tener una estructura, tener un edificio, sin una piedra angular: une dos

paredes. Muchos "inquilinos" que han recibido tanta bondad, personal y profesionalmente, de Dios quieren monopolizar el

gozo que podrían dar a Dios y a los demás y, como resultado, empobrecer cualquier gozo que pudieran dar. Niegan algo fun-

damental, algo estructural: que el dueño y su heredero son los que hacen posible su vida, lo reconozcan o no, y eventualmen-

te se agotan las segundas oportunidades (y la tercera, y la cuarta, etc.), y la piedad tiene que ser dar paso a la justicia. La

parábola de los labradores malvados en el evangelio de hoy es una forma de enseñar a los fariseos que habían caído en un

sentido retorcido de derecho sobre algo que no les pertenecía: el Pueblo de Dios. Entonces, cuando el Hijo venga en nombre

del verdadero "dueño" del Pueblo de Dios, lo rechazarán y lo matarán pensando que de alguna manera todo volverá a la nor-

malidad. Nuestro Señor hoy a través de la parábola está profetizando el resultado de su codicia y envidia: todo lo que pensa-

ban que era suyo será quitado y entregado a aquellos que serán dignos administradores de los dones de Dios. El vino en las

Escrituras simboliza la alegría. La Coca-Cola evoca muchos recuerdos felices. Imagínese si el distribuidor local de Coca-Cola

decidiera dejar de enviar su pedido a la oficina regional o la sede corporativa. Eventualmente lo interrumpirían y lo reemplaza-

rían, pero imagina que no puedes conseguir una Coca-Cola en ningún lugar de tu ciudad debido al "dictador" local.

San Pablo nos recordó hoy cómo podemos pagarle a nuestro Señor lo que se le debe: verdad, honor, justicia, pureza, hermo-

sura, gracia y excelencia. Esas cosas no solo traen paz y alegría a nuestras vidas, sino también a aquellas que conocemos y

amamos. Contemplemos hoy la bondad de Dios en nuestras vidas y pidamos que nos ayude a ver cómo podemos trabajar

con él para traer alegría a él, a los demás y a nosotros mismos.

La escuela católica San Jerónimo dice "Aquí somos familia". Vemos que esto es cierto ya que generacio-nes de familias asisten y apoyan a la escuela. Las personas se sienten atraídas por esta escuela y co-munidad parroquial, regresan para adorar, trabajar, ser voluntarios y enviar a la próxima generación de niños a la Escuela Católica San Jerónimo.

Una familia que verdaderamente ha ejemplificado este espíritu de apoyo generacional y participación en la escuela es la familia Bruegging / Krus. Los ni-ños Bruegging y muchos de los nietos Bruegging y Krus asistieron a nuestra escuela San Jeronimo. Jea-nette Bruegging se ofreció como madre voluntaria durante los primeros años de la escuela, después como empleada, trabajó en una variedad de posicio-nes durante muchos años y ahora es voluntaria de nuevo y sustituta en la escuela. Estaremos eterna-mente agradecidos por Jeanette y Pat Bruegging y su apoyo y fe en esta escuela.

Hoy, Janna Bruegging Krus es miembro del personal de la Escuela Católica San Jerónimo. Como emplea-da durante 17 años, Janna creció en esta parroquia y asistió a la Escuela Católica San Jerónimo. Janna se desempeña como asistente de la escuela y adminis-tra una variedad de tareas y deberes cada día. Des-pués de 17 años trabajando en la escuela, la Sra. Krus reflexionó sobre los cambios más grandes que ha visto en la educación y señala que la tecnología y el aprendizaje virtual o por video son el enfoque para muchos estudiantes y familias.

Cuando se le preguntó qué le encantaba de trabajar en San Jerónimo, la Sra. Krus dijo que esta escuela es una familia y que todos se preocupan por los de-más. Si se le pide a la Sra. Krus que intervenga para supervisar o ayudar con una clase, sus clases favori-tas para trabajar son las clases de educación física. A la Sra. Krus le gusta estar activa, especialmente en actividades al aire libre, como pescar y nadar con sus hijos.

La Sra. Krus da la bienvenida a todos y dice que si puede poner una sonrisa en el rostro de una persona al día, entonces ha hecho su trabajo. Ella modela su espíritu alegre para todos los profesores, el personal, los estudiantes y los padres.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process developed by the Catholic Church for prospec-tive converts to Catholicism who are above the age of infant baptism (7). Candidates will be introduced to our Catholic Faith in class and worship in preparation to receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation), at Easter.

For a period of months we will be discussing the teachings and practices of the Catholic Church in a wel-coming and open atmosphere, where we hope to have rich discussions about our faith, provide opportunities for fellowship, and help you find a place in our parish community. We will work to help you to develop a rich prayer life and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
