WHEN I THINK OF DR. RAMAN and his greatefforts of securing to the science of astrology, a

global status, which none could achieve earlier, he isfor me a gentle colossus in learning and knowledge, but an extremely simple human being at heart, withnothing but love for his fellow human beings. I cannotremember Dr RAMAN without remembering hisgrandfather, whom I was not fortunate to see. He wasthe one who perhaps was responsible to shape DrRAMAN, in his early days. I remember my college dayswhen I could know Dr RAMAN as a very great scholarin astrology but always felt diffident to meet or talk tohim. Only in 1972 I could meet Dr RAMAN personally. Iwent to “Sri Rajeswari” to collect my horoscope, whichI had given earlier to the office, to be cast. Then RAMAN

saw me. He enquired the purpose of my visit. Iintroduced myself as the ASP CID. (Later COD) Thentaking interest in me Dr RAMAN clad in a white dhotiand shirt, as an embodiment of simplicity, called me inand spoke for some time. This initial intimacy laterdeveloped into a lifelong association and friendship. Iremember even now, how I was thrilled to speak to agreat savant who had predicted the Second World Warand also the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

Dr RAMAN had that great quality of befriending anyone, tomake them at ease and more so with those, whom he felt, having an enquiring mind. Dr RAMAN can be compared toBertrand Russell in every aspect. He was a selfless humanbeing.

My Reminesences of aGreat Personality

D. N. MUNIKRISHNA, IPS

Unfortunately Dr RAMAN had to meet with numeroushardships in his life and the most shattering one wasthe near-fatal accident of Niranjan Babu. I stillremember Dr RAMAN waiting outside the nursing home,on a bench, along with me, when doctors hadproclaimed that the patient was quite serious. However,Dr RAMAN was calm and collected and was discussingwith me a variety of subjects like philosophy, even inthose tense moments.

It may require days and months to narrate myexperiences with RAMAN and my association with himfor over several decades. I cannot narrate them in justone or two hours. The news of the death of Dr RAMAN

came to me as a great shock. Even today I wonderhow at the age of 34, RAMAN could write such ascientific book on Planetary Influences in chasterhetoric English. Of his great works - 300 ImportantCombinations and Notable Horoscopes are thegreat contribution to Astrology. Dr RAMAN’s address in1975 at the UN is a great achievement, I have nosufficient words to describe the erudite scholarship, knowledge and fame that Dr RAMAN has left as a greatlegacy to the whole world.

I am fortunate that I had that great opportunity in mylife for having been associated with this grandpersonality for decades. I would carry those memories, throughout my life.

Mr. D. N. Munikrishna was born on 5th October 1942 in an agricultural family at Devagere Village, Bangalore District. MARRIAGE IS A SOCIAL, SPIRITUAL, and alegal union between two individuals. A successful

marriage depends on two things: finding the right personand being the right person. A successful marriage is like agood recipe whose main ingredients are love, commitment, understanding, concern and togetherness. If you caninclude these aspects in your married life you can findhappiness in your marriage.

Andre Maurois once aptly said, “A happy marriage is along conversation which always seems too short.” A happymarried life calls for constant commitment and concernfor each other.

Barnett Brickner says that “Success in marriage does notcome merely through finding the right mate, but throughbeing the right mate.”

Regardless of religion, culture or constitutional tradition, societies have always agreed on the nature of marriage.

Law of KarmaAction and reaction (in the moral sphere too) are equaland opposite.

We reap the effects of what we did in our previousbirths.

For every cause (major or minor) there is an effect.

The doctrine of truth will surprise those who believethat man is the complete master of his own fate.

Faith believes the unbelievable and receives theimpossible.

Medicine and prayers are gifts of nature to the mortalman.

Medicine has limitations but prayer goes beyondlimitations.

Though the 7th house is ‘kalatra’ bhava, all the twelvehouses have to be considered.

Astrological Analysis ofDelayed Marriage

PROF. N. S. MURTHY

Dr. N.S. Murthy is a consultant in Astrology, Vastu, Feng Shui, Gemmology, Numerology and Clairvoyance for three decades. With fourdoctorates in Astrology, Vasthu, Alternative Medicine and Medical Astrology he is the Founder-Chairman of Astro Vasthu Educationaland Charitable Trust.

AS I WRITE THESE LINES, the lingering thoughtin my mind is what are the important things in

father’s long and illustrious life that I should share withhis admirers and students around the globe. Is it thevirtually single-handed life-long effort of father thatsuccessfuly resurrected the subject of astrology fromthe depths of neglect to the heights of decency anddignity that it occupies today? Is it his life long practiceof the noble values of life as enshrined in our ancienttradition and heritage? Is it the effort that he made tomake Indians once again proud of their culture, traditionand heritage? Is it the dogged and determined effortthat he made to ensure that the lives and livelihood ofthousands of hard working and dedicated astrologersbecome respectable and rewarding? Is it the simplelife that he lived throughout his life? Is it. ... ? One cango on and on. In a nutshell father’s contributions as anindividual, scholar par excellence, editor, counsellor andguide to the society at large, nation and the world wereimmense and immeasurable. He breathed astrologytwenty-four hours a day. We miss father’s physicalpresence. One can never forget his sweet smile, pleasant face and the polite words. Even today, hisinvisible soul and spirit provides us the necessarycourage, strength, support, wise counsel and guidanceto encourage and enable us to continue his life longmission of properly presenting astrology to the world.

As many know, father’s early life was no bed of roses.Grandmother died soon after his birth. He was broughtup mainly by his grandmother. He grew up under thewatchful eyes of his grandfather (Pro fessor B.Suryanarain Rao). His father (Sri B. Nanjunda Rao)was a devout Hindu who practiced every religious riteand ritual precisely as defined by Vedic tradition.

Memories andMemorable Events

DR. BANGALORE SURESHWARA

B. Sureshwara obtained his Doctorate in Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, USA. He has taught Engineering at variousuniversities in USA. Dr. Sureshwara is a student of Ramayana and Vedic Astrology. Dr. Sureshwara successfully predicted the victoriesof President Bush (2000 and 2004) and President Obama (2008) in the USA Presidential Elections.

Grandfather completed 32 lakhs Japa of GayatriMantra. Father always remarked that grandfather wasa divine human being. There is no doubt, that the prayersand poojas of grandfather provided a divine protectiveumbrella to father throughout his life. Grandfatherpassed away when I was a small baby. I came to knowa lot about him and great grandfather through father.Father took immense delight and pleasure in talkingabout grandfather and great grandfather and nevermissed an opportunity to tel us about their achievements.

I am sharing this information to indicate the level ofaffection, respect and reverence father had forgrandfather and great grandfather. More importantly, that father fully practised throughout his life our greattraditional values, including respecting parents and otherelders in the family. During mother’s six decades oflife with father, she provided moral, emotional andphysical support for father. One of the proudest joysin father’s life was the achievement of mother inthe field of Yoga. Mother’s success in curing manymajor medical ailments through Hatha Yoga is well-known. During the last twenty-five years, father andmother were v i r tua ly inseparab le . Motheraccompanied father on his trips, whether it was toinaugurate a conference in the U.S.A. or to presideover a meeting in New Delhi.

Even though it has been decades, I still remember myhigh school years. After early education in a local school, the later part of middle and high school education wascompleted at Bishop Cotton’s Boys School. As BishopCottons was known for its discipline and high qualityeducation, father admitted me into it after I had someuneventful early education. Thereafter, my academic

Page 22: 99th Raman Jayanti Souvenir

performance remarkably improved. He was immenselypleased whenever his children achieved academic andother distinctions in life. One of the pleasant routinesof my studies at Bishop Cottons was the mile or sowalk that I took each day after class to meet father atthe Bowring Institute where he played tennis. I wouldregularly watch him play and pretty soon became anavid fan of father and tennis. Later on when 1 went tothe University of Notre Dame for my doctoral studiesin engineering, I turned from an avid fan to a regulartennis player. Father cherished the sport of tennisthroughout his life and played for nearly fifty years.

On the return trip from Bowring Institute, father and Iwould converse on my school work and also on othernone-too-serious topics. However, this regular routineconversation was the catalyst that later establishedgood ‘ life long communication between father and me.Over the years, our discussion covered politics, sports, family matters and many other subjects. Father and Ishared similar views on various matters. I regularlyvisited India and spent time with father and mother.During the last twenty-five years, I must have madeover twenty visits. During every visit, we made it apoint to play tennis and continue our discussion. Eventhough the years passed, father’s athletic ability virtualyremained the same even when he was eighty. Whenwe last played in 1992, he still had the magical touch tomake the tennis ball spin in mysterious ways and healways had a soft corner for me on the tennis court. Talways considered playing tennis with father anexclusive pri vilege and a never-to-be-forgottenexperience of pleasure and delight.

While in school, I had completed typewriting classes andstenography. This came in handy during the summerholidays when I ended up as a substitute typist to fatheron the days the office secretary was absent or onvacation. Then, as a teenager I may have not fullyappreciated doing work, but it was still an enjoyableperiod with father. I attended every lecture of fatherwhile I was in Bangalore and later never missed hislectures during my visits home. Father made everylecture interesting, not only to the learned people in thegathering, but even to the novice who attended it.Invariably, because of the audience’s enthusiasticresponse and interest, his one-hour talk would extend

to an hour and half or even two hours. He always stooderect and firm when he made his presentation. He wasimmensely involved in making sure his talk was clear, concise and complete. His voice was clear and distinct. He had an excellent command over English language.By his friendly and charming personality, he was ableto tame even• a restless audience. He had a good senseof humour. Father would alwa ys joke to the audiencethat because he was a Saturnian, he rarely laughed. Itwas far from true. He had a sweet smile. On a fewoccasions, when I went to father’s office for “serious”discussion, his smile would invariably disarm me. Ourdiscussions were always pleasant.

I was thinking of postponing my annual visit fromDecember 1998 to early 1999. But God’s ways aremysterious. After much thinking, I made the visit inDecember. It was a mixed blessing. During the visit, Inoticed, as always, father was enthusiastic andenergetic. He used to climb up and down the stairsatleast a dozen times a day without any sign ofweariness or weakness. People half his age would bebreathing heavily if they had to make so many trips onthe stairs a day. On one evening, I developed somesevere pain in the waist area and lay down to takesome rest. Even though it was nothing serious, fathercame into the room at least a dozen times in a matterof few hours to enquire about my pain and made surethat I had taken medicine and was better. In fact, therewas nothing unusual in this. Throughout his life, hisconcern for the welfare of the family members wasintense and immense. I was fortunate that pare ntswere with me on my visit to Nanjangud to worship LordSrikanteswara Swamy in December 1998. This hasbeen a family tradition for over sixty years. It wasDivine Wil that Father had to have one more Darshanof the Lord before he left for his heavenly abode.

Father was a stithapragna in the way our sages andseers reacted to events and incidents in life. Eventhough his life was tilled with many happy and somesorrowful events, he displayed neither extremehappiness nor extreme sorrow. He looked at liferealisticaly and not just sentimentally. Father was aman of d iv ine qua l i t i es . By h is remarkableachievements and his exemplary life, he will remainwith us eternally.

I FIRST THOUGHT OF DRAWING on my personalexperiences with father and writing about it. However,

almost every visit with my father was a memorableexperience and I decided it would be more appropriate ifI could write about the substance of the man.

The Talmud says “when a sage dies, all are kin”; and soit was when dad passed on. People from many lands andfrom many backgrounds, all had a tear in their eyes formy father. His birthday, today, just brings into focus thevaried attributes that made him a sage. For those whowere lucky enough to know my father, and many did, hewas so kind, approachable, unassuming and sweet thathis memory is imperishable. It was fashionable to practiseastrology when father restarted THE ASTROLOGICAL

MAGAZINE . However, he steadfastly stuck to propagatingastrology inspite of all obstacles in his way. In this, I am

The Sage That He WasB.A. KUMAR BABU

reminded of what he told me once, “kumar, you must standunflinchingly for what you belive”. His beliefs were notthe beliefs of a fanatic but that of an enlightened mindthat allowed new insights to modify previously held beliefs.

Though there are still may unenlightened minds, father, over a period of time, demolished almost allthe prejudices that prevailed against astrology. Astime progressed, honour upon honour was piled onhim. And, through all the deluge of honours, heremained perfectly and completely himself. He wasnot afraid of scientists, the press or politicians. Hedid not hesitate to express his opinions, howeverunpopular they might have been.

I want us to celebrate his spirit of steadfast and enlightenedindividualism on his birthday today.

Respect for Tradition

Jupiter’s benign influence makes one respect andprotect tradition. Right from the time of MaharshiParasara to the recent t imes, there have beenastrological savants who have faithfully followed thepath shown by the great Rishis. There have been alsoothers also who have floated their own theoriescontradictory of Rishi-prokta. Astrologers of the lattercategory are typically influenced by Rahu, whereasastrologers of the former category invariably haveJupiter’s blessings in their charts. DR. B.V. RAMANcertainly had the blessings of Jupiter with the 2nd lordJupiter in the 10th house.

Parasara has given importance to the Akshavedamsa(45th divisional chart) and the Shashtyamsa (60th

divisional chart). While listing the matters to bestudied from various divisional charts, the says thatall matters can be seen from these two charts. Thesetwo charts reflect the Karma gathered from previousbirths. DR. RAMAN has Jupiter in own sign in boththe charts* which makes Jupiter in the 10th housein Rasi even more potent.

With the blessings of Jupiter, DR. RAMAN followedRishi – prokta and played a historic role in therenaissance of astrology. Considering the herculeancontributions he made to the cause of the Divinescience of astrology in an age of prejudiced rejectionof tradition, one would expect him to attain Moksha.DR. RAMAN’s Brahma Dasa does suggest such aconclusion.

Brahma Dasa is one of the Ayurdasas mentioned byJaimini. Other Ayurdasas like Shula Dasa showmisfortune, suffering and death, but Brahma Dasa is

more than a Dasa that isuseful in timing death.Brahma is the Creator ofthis universe. As thenaming of an Ayurdasaafter the Creator mightsuggest, Brahma Dasa is aDasa useful inunderstanding the “birth-death-and-birth” cycle,

rather than a Dasa that merely shows death. BrahmaDasa running at death can shed light on one’s next life.

Brahma and Maheswara

Each chart has a Brahma, eleven Rudras and aMaheswara according to Jaimini.

Though the lord of the 8th house is normally calledRudra, we can find eleven Rudra Rasis by taking the8th sign from all the signs. The sign containing Jupiteris an exception.

Maheswara is the lord of the 8th house from theChara Atmakaraka and he is supposed to be moreimportant than Rudra. While Rudra stands for thedestruction of body. Maheswara stands for theemancipation of the soul (Atma). Maheswara in a

Page 25: 99th Raman Jayanti Souvenir

http://www.rrrf.in

chart represents one’s potential for attaining Mokshaand also the channel through which one’s soul triesto attain Moksha. A very strong Maheswara cangive Moksha, if the Brahma Dasa operating at deathactivates his positive energy.

In Prof. Raman’s chart, the Moon has the highestadvancement in Rasi and he is the Chara Atmakaraka. The exalted Moon represents the soul. Jupiter ownsthe 8th from the Moon in chart 1 and he does not occupyor exaltation sign. So, Jupiter is Maheswara in this chartand he may suggest emacipation of soul throughtraditional and spiritual activities.

To find Brahma, we have to take the stronger ofthe Lagna and the 7th house and consider the 6th,the 8th and the 12th lords therefrom, who are in oddsigns in the visible half from the chosen reference. In the case of Dr. Raman, the 7th house Leo isstronger with 3 planets. From Leo, the 6th, the 8th

and the 12th lords are Saturn, Jupiter and the Moon,None of them is in an odd sign. Now, considerAquarius as reference. The Moon, Mercury andSaturn own the 6th, the 8th and the 12th. Mercury isin the 7th in an odd sign and he is the sole candidate. So, Mercury becomes Brahma.

Brahma Dasa Computation

Because Brahma is in an odd sign, Brahma Dasa startsfrom Brahma and proceeds in the regular zodiacalorder. The Dasa duration of each sign is found in yearsby counting from the sign to the 6th lord from it andsubtracting one from the count. Both the 6th lord andthe distance to the 6th lord are reckoned in the reverseorder for even signs.

Mercury is in Leo and Leo Dasa is the first. FromLeo, Saturn owns the 6th house and occupies the10th house therefrom. So Leo Dasa is for 10 – 1 = 9years. The next Dasa is Virgo, an even sign. FromVirgo, Aries is the 6th house in reverse order andMars owns it. Mars is in Leo, the 2nd from Virgo inreverse order. So, Virgo Dasa is for 2 – 1= 1 years.Brahma Dasa years are enumerated in tabular formon the right.

Active Maheswara

DR. RAMAN was running Scorpio Dasa and CancerAntardasa as per Brahma Dasa on 20th December 1998.Cancer is the 3rd house from Arudha Lagna and itcontains Mrityu Pada (Arudha Pada of the 8th house).

Scorpio is in a trine from it and Maheswara Jupiteroccupies it! Maheswara Jupiter is strong in the Rasichart here and he is strong in Shashtyamsa too, wherehe occupies his Moolatrikona in what is the 50th houseaccording to this author’s rectification. Such aMaheswara would denote Poorva Punya and effort inthis life for Moksha. Brahma Dasa of the Rasi containingJupiter can surely have given Dr. Raman Moksha.

MY FATHER, DR. B.V. RAMAN was the greatestastrological savant the world has ever produced. Today,

if Jyotisha (Vedic astrology) has spread to every nook andcorner of the world, it is largely due to the work done by fatherthrough his lectures, teachings, writings, books, symposia andconferences.

My brothers, sisters and I are, indeed, blessed to have beenborn to such great parents as DR. B.V. RAMAN and Mrs.Rajeswari Raman.

I have been closely involved with him in his stupendous workof prompting Jyotisha ever since my 21st year, after mygraduation. I remember the way he trained all of us, brothersand sisters, in the best of Eastern and Western culture. Iremember way back in April 1959 when he was touring theU.S.A. and other countries, he had instructed us that by thetime he returned, we should be thorough in certain UpanishadSlokas (hymns). It was our respected mother Mrs. RajeswariRaman who saw to it that we learnt these Sanskrit Slokas.

All of us would be with him at lunch time and the discussionsthat we had across the table ranged from Vedic astrology toVastu to Indian culture. Right from day one of my work withhim, he made us go through all disciplines of life and showedus children that it was only hard and sincere work that couldpay dividends in one’s life.

I remember the days when I was studying at the Bishop Cotton’sBoys School in Bangalore with my brothers. Mother used to sendus delicious hot coffee through father, which we would relish aftera long day at schools! After school, we would go to the BowringInstitute where he played his favorite game of tennis and observedthe game with awe and amazement. Father, a left-hander, was anexcellent tennis player. His tennis opponents were baffled andconfused by his top-spin serves, which they could hardly receiveand return to the other side of the net!

We had letterpress machines when our press was first startedfor printing our magazine. He made us learn the art of printingfrom the machine men and typesetters. He also trained us in theoffice in the simple tasks of filing and maintainingcorrespondence, and in the process, taught us to understandand appreciate managerial responsibilities.

When I told father that I wanted to run a bookshop, he sent metraining to Higginbotham’s, Bangalore and put me under thebenign care of the then manager Mr. Natarajan. I tearnt everyaspect of running a successful bookstore, including the basictasks of cleaning the books, properly putting them in bags,

Never Before, Never AgainB. NIRANJAN BABU

sorting them subject-wise, maintaining the accounts and otherdetails which helped me a great deal when I started my ownbookshop Sri Suprajaram, The Occult Book House.

Humility was the hallmark of father. For his vast and wonderfulknowledge of not only Jyotisha but also many other subjects,he remained a very humble person throughout his life. Evenafter six decades of work in Vedic astrology, he used to refer tohimself as a student of Vedic astrology in his speeches. Reallyspeaking, he was a teacher to thousands and thousands ofstudents spread all over the world. He taught through his bookswritten on every conceivable aspect of Vedic astrology, throughthe columns of the internationally reputed THEASTROLOGICAL MAGAZINE, which he edited for over sixdecades until December 1998, and through his lectures all overthe world. His humility and modesty are what every one of ushere needs to learn if we ever want to succeed not only in ourrespective fields of study and research but also if wish to leadour life as decent and dignified individuals.

Today, Vastu has come to recognized as a subject of greatimportance and practical application. Father conducted the AllIndia Symposium on Vastu in Bangalore in 1995, in which over1400 delegates from all over India and abroad participated. Thiswas the catalyst for the phenomenal growth of Vastu all overthe world. In fact, as early as in 1954, father devoted a wholechapter on Vastu interfacing it with Jyotisha, in his monumentalwork Muhurtha (Electional Astrology).

My confidence was shaken badly in April 1998 when I met witha serious accident and was hospitalized for nearly two months. My parents coaxed, cajoled and persuaded me and they toldme it was my bounden duty to rise, stand again on my legs andto educate people on the greatness of Vastu as a subject thatcan immensely benefit mankind. Thus, it was father and motherwho were very instrumental in infusing confidence in me, whichenable me to visit the U.S.A. in November 1998 on a successfullecture tour covering Vastu. But for parents’ benign care andpersuasion, I would not have recovered so quickly from such aserious life-threatening accident.

Father was my chaitanya (life-energy) and today, we re-affirmand re-pledge to continue the excellent and exceptional work offather, through our journal THE ASTROLOGICAL MAGAZINEand our institutions.

I conclude my humble tribute to my father, a great modern sageand seer, as one who can aptly be described as Na Bhooto, NoBhavishyati- never before, never again.
