Provisioning Requirements
Provisioning Requirements
To configure IMMs you must be able to access your router by a console or Telnet connection. Refer to your router hardware installation guide for information and instructions.
Provision components in the following order:
1. Card slot number
2. Card type
3. Ports
Component Power Consumption
The following table provides power rating values, in watts, for all of the IMMs supported on the 7750 SR and 7450 ESS series. Depending on the IMM, power rating values are based on specific conditions, such as line rate of traffic and operating temperature of the modules. The following module conditions are used for power ratings:
• idle—Power consumption before the slot is configured or provisioned
• zero rate—0% line rate, at 25°C
• typical—50% line rate, at 25°C
• worst case—100% line rate, at 55°C
The tables below containing IMM power rating values are not in any way complete lists. New rating values are added to this table as they become available. Please check back to the tables in later releases for new power rating values and conditions.
The power rating values provided do not include any optic component power consumptions. The power ratings for optic components are listed in Table 4, “Optics Power Consumption,” on page 16.

Warnings and Notes
Warning:
• Electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage can occur if IMMs are mishandled. Always wear an ESD-preventive wrist or ankle strap and always connect an ESD strap to the grounding plug on the front of the chassis.
• Always place router components on an anti-static surface. • Do not power up the router until all components are installed and verified.• Impedance panels are required in all empty card and component slots to prevent excess dust
accumulation and to help control airflow and electromagnetic interference. Impedance panels do not have board components or connector pins.
Notes:
General:• Chassis slots and IMM type information can be configured prior to the component
installation. • IMMs are designed to fit in slots 1 through 4 on a 6-slot chassis, slots 1 through 5 on a 7-slot
chassis, and slots 1 through 10 on a 12-slot chassis. • Do not force an IMM into an SF/CPM slot.• Do not force an SF/CPM into an IMM slot.• If you have one or more IMMs installed in your router, you must install impedance panels in
any slots that do not contain an IOM or IMM.• If you have one or more IMMs installed in your router, you must use PEM-3s.• If you are installing the 12-Port 10GB-SFP+ (IMM12-10GB-SFP+) and/or the 1-Port
100GB-CFP (IMM1-100GB-CFP), you must install Enhanced Fan Trays in your router.

Installing IMMs
To install an IMM:
Step 1 Remove the IMM from the packaging. Do not touch the printed circuit board and connector pins.
Step 2 Holding the IMM by the edges, rotate the ejector levers inward. The ejector levers must be in this position to release the locking mechanism.
Step 3 Align the IMM with the slot guides and slide inward until the locking mechanism engages with the card cage.
Step 4 Rotate the ejector levers outward to lock the IMM in place.
If an IMM lever does not shift to the locked position, then the card is probably not properly seated. Pull the IMM out halfway, verify the card is moving properly in the slot guides and then reinsert it. Shift the levers to the locked position.
Step 5 Secure the IMM into place by tightening the captive screws.

Replacing the Air Filter
The OC-768 and 40GB DWDM Tunable IMM air filter covers are accessible from the front of the IMM. Once the air filter cover is removed, the air filter is exposed and can be removed.
Alcatel-Lucent recommends inspecting the air filter(s) on a monthly basis. If dirt and dust accumulation are found, Alcatel-Lucent recommends replacing the air filter as the most optimal course of corrective action. If desired, customers may also clean the air filter for reuse. If cleaning the filter of a system in-service, use a spare filter as the initial replacement. Do not run the system for extended periods of time without a filter installed. The filter is made of a foam material and “dry cleaning” by use of a vacuum is recommended. After cleaning, inspect the filter to insure the filter has not been damaged prior to re-use.
Figure 12: Removing the Air Filter Cover
Figure 12 illustrates the removal of the air filter cover, as follows:
Step 1 Unfasten the air filter captive screw.
Step 2 Pull the left side of the air filter cover outward.
Step 3 Unhinge the right side of the air filter cover and remove completely.

Warnings and Notes
Warnings and Notes
Danger:
• Fiber optic equipment can emit laser or infrared light that can injure your eyes. Never look into an optical fiber or connector port. Always assume that fiber optic cables are connected to a light source.
Caution:
• Before using the optics on this MDA, verify that the optical path is in compliance with the parameters of the optical components. In particular, pay close attention to any minimum attenuation requirements for the optics. If minimum attenuation requirements are not met, the optical receiver components may be permanently damaged. Contact your local Alcatel Welcome Center for assistance for further information about your Alcatel products.
• Make sure the plug is inserted while you install or remove the SFP, XFP, CFP, or QSFP. Only remove the plug when you are ready to attach network cables.
• Electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage can occur if router components, including SFPs, XFP, CFP, or QSFP, are mishandled. Always wear an ESD-preventive wrist or ankle strap and always connect an ESD strap to the grounding plug on the front of the chassis.
• Always place router components on an anti-static surface. • Avoid bending fiber optic cable beyond its minimum bend radius.• Do not exceed the recommended minimum 1 1/2-inch (3.81 cm) bend radius for fiber optic cables.• CFP Pluggable Optic Modules are very hot while installed and in use. Please allow for the CFP to
cool before removing or handling it.
Warning:
• Do not remove the dust cover on the connector until you are ready install the SFP, XFP, CFP, or QSFP.Always replace the dust cover when the SFP, XFP, CFP, or QSFP is removed.
Notes:
• Discard SFPs, XFPs, CFP, or QSFP according to all local laws and regulations.• SFPs, XFPs, CFP, or QSFP can be installed and replaced without disabling the interfaces.• SFPs, XFPs, CFP, or QSFP are keyed to prevent incorrect insertion.
Page 60 7x50 SR/ESS IMM Installation Guide
Optical Tranceivers
Installation Preparation
Clean the connector before inserting it to prevent transfer of small particles and contamination of the transceiver. Do not interchange SFPs, XFPs, CFP, or QSFP from one port to another without first cleaning the connectors.
To clean the connector, you can either:
• Wipe the side and end of the ferrule with a lint-free alcohol-dampened cloth.
• Blow dry the ferrule with compressed air and inspect for lint. Do not insert the compressed air nozzle into the receptacle when blowing out.
Locking Mechanisms
Alcatel SFPs, XFPs, CFP, or QSFP can use different lock and release methods. Possible lock and release mechanisms include:
• Locking handle —A lever in the front of the SFP or XFP that you gently push to insert into or eject from the port.
• Bail — A bar or wire latch in the front of the SFP or XFP that you pull down and outward to release the module.
• Tabs—Tabs on the sides of the SFP or XFP that you press inward.
• Fastening screws—Fixed screws on either sides of the CFP or QSFP.
Consult with your network administrator to understand your specific locking mechanism.
