Typical example

Mount the machine and dismount the machine onlyat locations that have steps and/or handholds. Beforeyou mount the machine, clean the steps and thehandholds. Inspect the steps and handholds. Makeall necessary repairs.

Face the machine whenever you get on the machineand whenever you get off the machine.

Maintain a three-point contact with the steps and withthe handholds.

Note: Three-point contact can be two feet and onehand. Three-point contact can also be one foot andtwo hands.

Do not mount a moving machine. Do not dismount amoving machine. Never jump off the machine. Donot carry tools or supplies when you try to mount themachine or when you try to dismount the machine.Use a hand line to pull equipment onto the platform.Do not use any controls as handholds when youenter the operator compartment or when you exit theoperator compartment.

Alternate ExitMachines that are equipped with cabs have alternateexits. For additional information, see Operation andMaintenance Manual, “Alternate Exit”.

Daily InspectionSMCS Code: 1000; 7000

Hot oil and hot components can cause personalinjury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components tocontact skin.

At operating temperature, the engine coolant ishot and under pressure.

Steam can cause personal injury.

Check the coolant level only after the engine hasbeen stopped and the cooling system pressurecap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Remove the cooling system pressure cap slowlyto relieve pressure.

Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoidcontact with the skin and eyes to prevent personalinjury.

NOTICEAccumulated grease and oil on amachine is a fire haz-ard. Remove this debris with steam cleaning or highpressure water, at least every 1000 hours or each timeany significant quantity of oil is spilled on a machine.

Note: For maximum service life of the machine,make a thorough daily inspection before you operatethe machine. Inspect the machine for leaks. Removeany debris from the engine compartment and theundercarriage. Ensure that all guards, covers, andcaps are secured. Inspect all hoses and belts fordamage. Inspect all lights and mirrors for damage.Make the needed repairs before you operate themachine.

Perform the following procedures on a daily basis.

In order to lift the machine, connect the steeringframe lock link (3). In order to transport the machine,connect the steering frame lock link (3). The pins (1)should be secured in place by the locking pins (2).

Disconnect the steering frame lock link (2) beforethe machine is operated. Use the pins (1) in order tosecure the steering frame lock link (2) in the STOREDposition. The pins (1) should be secured in place bythe locking pins (3).

Outside door latch

The right cab door can be used as an alternative exit.The door can be opened from the inside of the cabor from the outside of the cab. Release the latch inorder to open the door.

To release the right cab door from the fully openposition, press the release button on the side of thedoor.

Opening the door will eliminate the pressurizationof the cab.

The operator’s seat that is provided with this machineis in compliance with the appropriate class of ISO7096.

Note: Adjust the seat at the beginning of each workperiod and adjust the seat when you are changingoperators.

The seat should be adjusted so that full pedal travelis allowed with an operator that is seated against theback of the seat.

Pull up on the back cushion angle lever (1). Holdthe back cushion angle lever and adjust the backseat cushion to the desired angle. Release the backcushion angle lever in order to lock the back seatcushion.

Pull up on the fore/aft lever (2). Hold the fore/aft lever.Slide the seat forward to the desired position or slidethe seat backward to the desired position. Releasethe fore/aft lever in order to lock the seat into position.

Turn knob (3) clockwise in order to increase thestiffness of the suspension. Turning the knobcounterclockwise decreases the stiffness of thesuspension. Set the weight to the approximate weightsetting. Do not turn the knob past the maximumweight setting or past the minimum weight setting.

Push the seat angle lever (4) and raise the front ofthe seat cushion to the desired angle. To lower thecushion into the desired position, push the seat anglelever and push down the front of the seat cushion.Release the lever in order to lock the seat cushioninto one of three positions.

Pull up headrest (1) in order to remove the headrest.

Adjustable Armrest

Pull up the lever (3) for the back cushion angle.Hold up the lever and adjust the seat cushion to thedesired angle. Release the lever in order to lock theseat cushion.

Pull up the fore/aft lever (4). Hold up the lever andslide the seat to the desired position. Release thelever in order to lock the seat into position.

Pull up the lever (5) for the angle of seat cushionand raise the front of the seat cushion to the desiredangle. To lower the cushion into the desired position,pull up the lever and push down the front of the seatcushion. Release the lever in order to lock the seatcushion into one of three positions.

Turn the knob (6) clockwise in order to increasethe stiffness of the suspension. Turn the knobcounterclockwise in order to decrease the stiffnessof the suspension. Use the indicator (7) to determinethe approximate weight setting.

Hold down the seat height level lever (8) in order torelease the seat height lock. Move the seat to thedesired height. Release the lever in order to lock theseat into position.

Turn the lumbar support lever (9) clockwise to ahorizontal position in order to utilize the lumbarsupport. If lumbar support is not desired, turn thelumbar support lever counterclockwise to a verticalposition.

Heated Seat (If Equipped)

The heating element for the heated seat is controlledby a thermostat. The thermostat opens the circuit forthe heating element at 26.5° ± 5°C (79.7° ± 9°F). Thethermostat closes the circuit for the heating elementwhen the temperature drops below 15°C (59°F). Thestart switch key must be in the ON position for theheated seat to work.

Note: This machine was equipped with a seat beltwhen the machine was shipped from Caterpillar.At the time of installation, the seat belt and theinstructions for installation of the seat belt meet theSAE J386 standards. See your Caterpillar dealer forall replacement parts.

Always check the condition of the seat belt andthe condition of the mounting hardware before youoperate the machine.

Seat Belt Adjustment forNon-Retractable Seat BeltsAdjust both ends of the seat belt. The seat belt shouldbe snug but comfortable.

Lengthening the Seat Belt

1. Unfasten the seat belt.

2. To remove the slack in outer loop (1), rotate buckle(2). This will free the lock bar. This permits theseat belt to move through the buckle.

3. Remove the slack from the outer belt loop bypulling on the buckle.

4. Loosen the other half of the seat belt in the samemanner. If the seat belt does not fit snugly with thebuckle in the center, readjust the seat belt.

Shortening the Seat Belt

1. Fasten the seat belt. Pull out on the outer belt loopin order to tighten the seat belt.

2. Adjust the other half of the seat belt in the samemanner.

3. If the seat belt does not fit snugly with the bucklein the center, readjust the seat belt.

Pull seat belt (4) out of the retractor in a continuousmotion.

Fasten seat belt catch (3) into buckle (2). Make surethat the seat belt is placed low across the lap of theoperator.

The retractor will adjust the belt length and theretractor will lock in place. The comfort ride sleevewill allow the operator to have limited movement.

Push the release button on the buckle in order torelease the seat belt. The seat belt will automaticallyretract into the retractor.

Extension of the Seat Belt

When using retractable seat belts, do not use seatbelt extensions, or personal injury or death canresult.

The retractor system may or may not lock up de-pending on the length of the extension and thesize of the person. If the retractor does not lockup, the seat belt will not retain the person.

Longer, non-retractable seat belts and extensions forthe non-retractable seat belts are available.

Caterpillar requires only non-retractable seat belts tobe used with a seat belt extension.

Consult your Caterpillar dealer for longer seat beltsand for information on extending the seat belts.
